I've seen NRMA advertising around saying they offer cheaper car insurance than anybody else or they'll bear it by 10%.
Has anybody taken up that promise? The quote I have got from AAMI is around $650 but NRMA can only offer $1150, am I likely to get insurance for $585? |
Yes, defo. Until the first time I haggled for insurance I didn't know they were so flexible. You can get huge savings just by asking.

i got my bike insurance which was 200 over previous years, so i went looking for alternatives, found better and rang qbe to cancel and they said they'd beat it if i gave them 5 minutes.
it pays to shop around. |
I did this today funnily enough, bought a new car and the best deal I could get was Shannons for $1064. Went online and got a quote through NRMA for $1600, then I saw the 10% deal on their website, so I gave them a ring.
They will want your previous policy or the proposed policy faxed to them. So I am now insured through NRMA for $950'ish. |
Couldn't you also play them off against Budget Direct who offer $50 if you find a better price?
|
Usually have disclaimers about this don't they. But don't be surprised if you can't get the 10% and some.

I switched to RACV cause i moved house out to small town and Allianz wanted me to give them more money yet RACV gave my missus back $50 a year on her insurance which makes sense cause we were living on a main road in suburbia with a speed limit of 80 now where on a remote country back street with a speed limit of 50.
Upon switching i got hire car as well (whcih i didnt have) and still managed to save $200, after 1 year with RACV my policy has dropped down another $200 not sure why but im not complaining. Now im only paying $650 a year. RACV have good multi-policy discounts too and you get discounts for heaps of other stuff. My missus been with them for 3 years now and shes paying $560 a year. |
sorry to hijack.
but do insurance companies cover and fix a car if its been keyed? |
yes, but if you can't nominate the party who damaged your vehicle you'll have to pay
(worked for one of the big insurers in their auto claims department for quite a while) edited for clarity. pm for more info if required. taggs likes keeping himself employed so won't divulge anything that could be classed as even possibly confidential in the interests of keeping himself employed :D edit: dear god is that the time?! last edited by taggs at 05:39:46 13/May/10 |
my 6 cylinder patrol is insured by budget for $387/yr. i recently checked budget's price but it's gone up to $450/yr, so it wasn't worth me swapping to nrma to get 387-10%

It's all well and good to get cheaper insurance but how much of a b**** when it comes to claiming for stuff? i.e. did you read all the fine prints?
I'm not suggesting this isn't a good deal but seriously with stuff like this you need to read and understand all the fine prints. I'm with suncorp arguably not the cheapest one out there ( probably more expensive) but I never ever have any problem with claiming stuff, quick and painless for both home/contents and car. Just my $0.02c |
Suncorp might charge me $950 for my full comp but they're big pimping when it comes to sorting out any claims
I've only had one claim where I had to pay my excess (the dead dog incident) and every other time they've had my car back to me as good as new within 2 weeks of the claim |
yes damo, and you will need to pay your base excess because there's no-one you can put the blame on. however, anything that happens to your car while it's unattended doesn't incur the age excess because it wasn't the fault of the driver, even if you're sole driver and owner and sole person listed on the policy. a lot of people don't know this.
I sympathise with you though, my falcon got keyed many, many years ago when i used to work next to a cop shop. I'd park out front of the cop shop and back in the day when my falcon wasn't like a decade old, i'm pretty sure some punk kid confused it for a D's car (it does sortta look like one, i'll admit that). Back in the day also a mate of mine bought the same sort of car as mine, and purposely mocked it up to look like a D's car. Lowered, chaser rims, aerials (legit, he had a UHF and a mobile phone kit), tint. Looked 100% genuine undercover cop car. He got it egged so many times he decided to put some alloys on it. I have my car insured with NRMA, but i've never claimed so i can't really help ya there. last edited by hardware at 09:34:50 13/May/10 |
