I noticed over the years there's been a fair bit of 4x4 chat around here so I'll ask here.
So, I joined the dark side and bought a 4x4. The bug is starting to bite, have already ordered a better TC, lift kit, some tyres and am looking for a bullbar that doesn't have a 999999999999% markup (I mean really, $1500+ for some metal tube welded together?). Anyone got some recommendations on where I could go to get my toes wet? Preferably easy/mild as the only experience I've had so far is driving a Scat on the beach on Moreton. Oh, and I bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Yeah yeah yeah, I don't intend on going too hardcore with mud and whatnot so I think it'll do me fine. |

while not completely ruling out the idea of dirty markup, bullbars now require substantially more R&D because they need to work in with the airbag system in modern vehicles
as for local tracks.. those are slowly getting smothered by housing development but the bush between vennor drive and upper ormeau road at ormeau still has a nice mix from easy to doosy, there's still a few minor tracks at the back of springfield/bellbird park I think and some out at ripley might find more info here http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/forum17.php |

I was pretty drunk in the back seat when my mates drove me into some place near ipswich.. probably just on the left of the cunningham highway a few km from ipswich motorway intersection.. Like i said i was drunk, and i'll tell you right now, when i was covered in mud after jumping out into 2ft deep mud to wind a winch out to a tree, i wasn't happy.

Ormeau is always good but not easy/mild... well maybe if you stayed just to Vennor road. Back of Springfield is getting smaller and smaller by the day and is pretty much gone. Coming up to Summer the days we go out do tend to reduce a bit. |

It bit me hard too, my 3" lift kit just turned up today from cal offroad, Jim will tell you that it can't go over 2" alas I will prove him wrong! So paveway and I have got that to install on the weekend, trying to get it high enough to fit some bigger tyres under it like Jim sort of said with the bullbars already, they are worth it .. i mean you can get away with a cheap one but when it comes down to it holding up to a front on collision, you'll be glad you paid $2k for it $2k worth of damage is nothing for a small front on accident either, bend your radiator support and break a headlight on a modern vehicle is easily $2k with paint and panel work If you're still learning how to drive it, I'd recommend doing some tracks just off the beaches around SE Qld theres a few tracks that go from tin can bay road back to the beach different levels of difficulty but none are so tough your average 4x4 wouldn't make it through, one of them takes about 2hrs to complete and theres a few different places where you can take the easy, medium or hard way up by TC do you mean traction control? if so, scrap that all together and wait until you get so angry with getting 1/2 way up a hill that you go home and order twin diff locks get a uhf, you'll soon get angry with replacing b82rez in your handheld types because of accidentally leaving them on when you get out of the car |
What sort of car do you have tequila?
I'm thinking I'll just go 2" lift and if I have any issues I'll just chuck some wheel spacers in and cut the guards and put some flares on for bigger tyres. By TC I meant Transfer Case. The Grand Cherokess have some funky mechanical traction control thing inside the transfer case that dies pretty easily. Mine is fubar and it's cheaper putting a stronger transfer case in then replacing the broken bit. As an added bonus I get 2hi, 4full time, 4hi offroad, 4lo instead of just full time 4hi and 4lo. I'd absolutely love doing Cape York. Would love to see the entire top end. nah I said that if you start going too far over 2-3" with IFS you simply rob yourself of downward travel cos you're just closing the distance between the control arm and the bumpstop. you'll find that out when you fit it though, don't take my word for it :)

I've got a hilux, unfortunately it has independent front suspension but .. I'm moving on with my life.. I can get about 3" lift out of it by dropping the front diff down to compensate for the cv angle increase with lift I've now got bilsteins front & rear and basically what I'm trying to do is fit 33x11" or 33x12" tyres under it, giving me a total of 4-5" more clearance under my front diff lifting suspension on IFS vehicles does lift the diff, which is about the only benefit of IFS I took my side steps off on sunday and im going to build some rock sliders out of mild steel pipe soon, in an effort to save my sils from being KO'd my old man is also helping me to fabricate a tow bar & rear step (w/ spare wheel carrier off a stub axle for longer trips) +Jims response yeah I know Jim, it'll still be better than the standard setup off road though I've got 4" adjustable bilsteins which I only intend to run at 3" and a 1" drop diff kit I could have spent the same money and done the drop bracket setup but then you have 0 suspension benefit, just extra height above your tyres .. which yes, is gay worst case I can get some new control arms from the US which were designed to fix the IFS down travel problem, but I'll see how I go after this weekend I'm more interested in getting the big tyres on first last edited by tequila at 16:45:26 22/Sep/09 |

There are a bunch of 4WD parks around brisbane:
Springs - Quite rocky with tracks ranging from moderate to Vehicle write off. Levuka - Mostly Mud with hill climbs through dense forest. City View - Fairly Rocky caters from soft to extreme. Janowen - Mainly black soil open easy to moderate tracks with the occasional rocky hill climb. To name a few. Sundown National park is also quite nice for a weekend camp/drive but is fairly tame. We went to Janowen on the weekend which is up on the cunningham range and had a blast destroying a 60 series. Unfortunately it didn't break. Make sure you always go with atleast one other car incase you get bogged or run into trouble and if something looks tough, walk it first and use a spotter. Try and do some rust proofing before driving on the beach as it'll kill most cars before engine/mechanical failure especially around the windscreen, guards, roof channels and drain holes underneath your car. If you're literally wanting to get your feet wet, extend your diff breathers and don't submerge your car past the air intake. Also get RACQ ultra-care, if you can get your vehicle to the road and say "what ever failed" happened on the road they'll tow you home for free. City View isn't really there any more is it? Scenic Rim took over (Not the same guy from City View even though 1/2 of Scenic rim includes old City View areas)
Rover Park is another good one, but 3hrs drive from Brisbane. LCMP is good too, but again further drive. Except maybe Scenic Rim most of those places are best for the weekend (or even long weekend) where as Ormeau/Glasshouse you can still get quite a bit in even if you only go for the day. We're heading down to Levuka in October but i'm not going to have my Jeep back before then :/ I get to Nav it up for a change. |

Yeah city view was shut down and re-opened under Scenic Rim Adventure Park. We've done Springs in a day leaving early Saturday doing all the tracks our vehicles were capable of doing. But yeah you can't go past Glass House Mountains and ormeau for day trips.
At levuka there's a water hole that has deep written on a sign in front, it isn't lying. It's pretty well bottomless. |

bfg make an a/t in at least one of those sizes, good lookin tyre and plenty of ppl have a good run with them

Yeah, if you don't go out all that often and dont mind spending some time changing tyres I really suggest a second set of Muddies on Steel rims.
My daily drivers are BFG Muddies and they make a bit of noise on the roads. But I have a very short drive to work, so it doesn't bother me much. I would definatly suggest any BFG or Mickey Thompson. If they are going to be a second set I might also suggest Federals ( http://www.federaltyres.com.au/suv ) but they have a fairly soft rubber, great for off road wheeling but they will wear quicker on the roads. Cheaper then BFG and MT's. I'd go up 2in if it could fit in your wheel arch without fouling anything (254/65x16) but i'm not sure about what you can fit under the Suzie's. 2" might be a stretch on stock suspension. |
235/75 apparently fouls on full lock so needs to be smaller than that. I thought about getting say a 1" lift via a coil spring spacer or something but not sure if i want to do that.

don't forget TEQ, you can put in a DIFF drop kit for the front about $179, to fix up some of the CV angle if you have any issues.
I just went on a great trip last weekend with the local 4wd club, The new Hilux was well represented. I was amazed at how much more clearance the guy had that just removed his running boards had than mine. So they are next to come off, other than that the biggest complaint is the droppy front end, i dont find the rear to be such a great big issue atm. Are you going to install the Lift kit yourself? or are you taking it to a mob to do? on the trip i went on the new triton and the new navara guys all spent some time bending there running boards back into shape. Mine just got some scrapes so wasn't half bad. Im pretty sure your a member over at newhilux.net forums i think its avenger 4x4, they have some decent underbody protection which looks nice, (like full underbody coming soon aswell). Take plenty of pics if you have an offsider when doing the change over. I really goyta get mine lifted before we go the way of NSW/VIC where it looks like its No Lift Period unless engineered. I'm glad I live in QLD again heh - my lift and wheels are probably going to be illegal but if you dont draw attention to yourself you're generally ok all im going to do with my rock sliders is get 12 bits of plate steel (6 per side) with 4 holes punched in each corner, bolt them to the chassis with high tensile bolts and then weld mild steel piping to the plates, out under the sils, weld another bit of mild steel on top of those and get some pipe bent to finish off either end remove, sand blast, powder coat, wallah i've saved $500+ on ARB rock sliders i bought an extended brake line with the suspension, i knew that would be a problem its only the rear that causes problems but i might replace the fronts too just for the nice feeling of braided lines http://unix.org.au/~brett/hilux/bilsteins/IMG_0822.JPG shackles, leafs, shocks/springs and new bushes, drop diff kit and braided line i have to remove my mudflaps front & rear, might need to manipulate the inner guard a bit too should all be worth it, i'll post a pic on the weekend after its done what are you driving exodus? last edited by tequila at 22:40:04 22/Sep/09 |

apparently the auto's arent tooo bad, they are crap on sand tho.
alot of people find it hard to tow anything without putting on a transmission cooler aswell. I went the manual, Love the v6, fuel wise its not that thirsty its actualy pretty good 11-13l per 100km on highway(does slightly better fuel on 120km/hr then 100-105 go figure) around town about 14l/100 depending on how stop start. Off road no complaints, it has heaps of power the max torque is the same as diesel, and pulls max torque around 2400/2600 rpm. I believe the v6 has a slightly different gear ratio for first/second then the diesel, i can prety much sit in low 1st/2nd and idle around most stuff without applying any acceleration but just like the diesel if it needs it it has it on tap. On the recent trip i got to have a look in the engine bay of the Triton, geeez you don't not wanna be the man having to pay when something goes wrong with it out of warranty, and as for space to put anything (dual battery compressor if wanted to upgrade lockers etc). last edited by 3x0dus at 23:21:08 22/Sep/09 last edited by 3x0dus at 23:22:50 22/Sep/09 |

Maxis Buckshots (mudders) aren't too bad, I've found them better than the BFG mudders but aren't as good as the MT Baja Claws but much cheaper.
Bigger tyres make a huge difference 4wding however be aware that driving with mudders on the beach sucks. I'd also be interested in a 4x4 event. |
what's wrong with muds on the beach out of interest, I've never had an issue
once you deflate them which you should regardless of the type, they're all much of a muchness. last fraser trip I was even too lazy to swap out the simex pedes, even those were fine :) |
Jeep does fine on the beach with Muddies, but Luke really notices the difference in his Challanger between his Scorpians and BFG Muds.
I think that the Pootrol is just so fat and heavy it doesn't matter what you're driving on in the sand :p |

The main problem you get is when you're trying to get into and through cuttings, your MT's will try and dig thus slowing you down while your AT's/slicks will just spin on the top allowing you to keep your speed. They do help distribute the load seeing they are usually wider though.
I've tried driving up a heavily rutted beach cutting with both AT's and MT's, got up first time on the AT's and couldn't get through at all with the MT's. |

I really dont notice the difference in the sand with the Jeep, but thats because it's as light as f*** and barely even indents into the sand. I also usually let my tyres down from the start and not just if I start having trouble. |

oohhhh now you tell me, I was away all weekend in Midgee(sp?) no mobile coverage WTF, on an organised dirtbike ride! 130 kms both sat and sun. Was awesome, somehow I did an upside down starfish and DIDN'T fall off :O Totally didn't mean too but my ktm tried to kick me off, but I man handled that s*** back into line. Imagine doing a handstand, holding onto the handle bars at 90kmh. SCARY! Well, my "I'll just buy a cheap 4x4 that needs a bit of work it'll be cheaper" thing isn't working out too well haha..
Got a set of lifted Old Man Emu springs and long travel shocks. (A mate runs a tyre shop, got to do the lift with decent tools, a hoist and an air gun, made it so much easier and scored a free wheel alignment too) Got a new transfer case that lets me run 2hi 4 full time 4 part time and 4lo (a bit in mine was stuffed, was cheaper to upgrade then replace the bit) Just ordered 4 new trailing arms. (After the lift I started getting death wobbles, all the bushes in the trailing arms are rooted, hoping this'll help out) Replaced 2 CV boots. Replaced a front wheel hub assembly. Had Aircon regassed. Replaced two tyres. Upgraded the stereo. Replaced the handbrake shoes (has 4 wheel discs but handbrake is on a separate drum thing, they where fubar) Replaced the air struts for the tailgate. Still gotta replace all the sway bar bushes, find a nice front and rear bar, fit the UHF, buy a set of offroad wheels and tyres, get a winch and probably some skid pans.
