But, the servers couldn't quite handle it. And crashed. With Epic Games detailing in a new post that the growth from 60 thousand concurrent players in Fortnite to now 3.4 million concurrent players thanks to Fortnite Battle Royale has been a technical challenge for the veteran studio. To say the least. So much so that it's now hiring people with online experience across the globe.

Issues aside, the meteoric rise in popularity that Fortnite has seen in the past few months means that it's now perhaps the most popular game in the world across PC and console. Compared to PUBG, which is not free-to-play like Fortnite, the 3.4 million figure is about 10% higher than the 3.1 that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds hit recently.

With the post going into a bunch of technical detail about the current server setup for Fortnite and the "challenges of rapidly scaling a game and its online services" it's a fascinating position that Epic now finds itself in. So if you're into servers, databases, throughput and latency - be sure to check it out.

There be graphs. And data flow charts.
