Personally I'd never get a laptop for gaming, not as easy to upgrade than a desktop.

Yeah but sometimes you don't have a choice. No room for a table, move around a lot, etc.

The problem is he wants to play FPS... not sure if any laptop would actually meet the need for a solid mouse + keyboard + desk. At least with single player game syou can get by with the trackpad.

You are going to have to be more specific. What games? what do you classify as highish FPS? What graphic detail level?

Based off my interpretation I think your budget is too low, the minimum graphics card you would need is probably a 1060. Which puts the price at just under $2k.

If you reduce the video card down to a 1050Ti you can get some $1-1.5k laptops. 15" with 1080P screen.

I ummmed and arrghed about this for ages and ended up getting both.

Initially I was looking at a high end laptop ~$3.5k. The decided that I didnt really need it, and looked at just getting a mid range one for about $2k.

In the end I decided to get a $2k laptop and a $1.5k desktop. (technically I haven't got the desktop yet, aiming for Christmas)
