Hey guys

This is my first post so don't hate me please. I am busy doing research on a gaming laptop (I know, I know - laptops are for p***ies but I have no choice as I'll be travelling a lot soon). I also have the budget of a broke schoolgirl.

To give you some background the only game i really plan on playing is Dota 2, so my requirements aren't exactly off the wall.

I found this article and have been going through options: https://laptopninja.io/finding-the-best-gaming-laptops-under-500-dollars/

Seems like there aren't really any dedicated graphics cards which is a major bummer except for the one Acer which apparently has a terrible screen. I also have an Acer and it had a crappy screen so I believe it. I also don't know how many of these laptops are available locally.

Where would you guys look locally? The R6 seems like it will just play Dota 2 on normal settings which is alright. Maybe there are better deals locally somewhere though?

Lenovo could also be a good one but there don't seem to be any of the Z series on the Lenovo oz website: http://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/lenovo/lenovo-y-series/c/88LG80Y?menu-id=Y_Series_Gaming

Thanks for the help guys.

PS. If you play dota add me!!! steam ID ashburner2

I'm running a Lenovo E450, i7, 8gb ram, SSD, 1080p, 2GB discrete graphics, only cost me $900, not the best but pretty damn good for the price

Thanks m8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The thinkpad looks perfect.

You reckon the SSD is worth saving up for though? What games are you playing at the moment? Is yours also running the R7?

Yes, mine is fully optioned, top of the line, apart from RAM. Yes, running the R7.
I think the SSD is worth every cent.
What games am I running? Bejewelled and some dosbox games lol. I'll punish it a bit harder soon.
Don't expect the R7 to be a top performer though, it's a pretty basic card.

spook is right.
but the laptop i7 is only a 2 core with hyperthreading
so a laptop i7 is basically an i3 :S

is there like a generally accepted default hardware benchmark test?
you know, like that broadband speed test that everyone uses, but for local hardware?

Passmark for CPU, 3DMark for Games I'd say? Is that what you mean? All the different use cases for PC's mean there are a lot of benchmarks for different things compared to something straightforward like internet speed.

MSY or Gamedude. I got my MSI laptop from gamedude, it played CoD ok (had it for a couple of years now) but it was way over your budget.

I'd beware of Lenovo's. I bought my mum an AIO PC and it's been flawless but my Lenovo tablet had issues less than a week old (screen is wonky but works ok if you smash the tablet on the table so something's obviously loose). Looks like it's a mixed bag of goodies when it comes to quality.

omg girls

for dota 2 trolling you only need something like a dell inspiron 15 - you can get them super cheap. I played a lot of dota on mine and even guild wars 2

Multiple lols.

Gaming laptop... They do not exist. A decent video card is bigger than most laptops.

$750 laptop... heh you got what you paid for.

I spent more on a single video card for a sli gaming setup over 20 years ago. When a house in Brisbane cost under 130k...
Ironically it'd probably have a higher framerate than the i3 you referenced inspite of Moore's law.

ps. dota is not gaming, it's dota.

how did you set up an sli rig in 1995, possibly earlier Obes? did you somehow create a time travelling machine back before you hated the world?
Cue the big talk down about how it was around even back then, which is kinda true, but also kinda bulls***.

98 actually, unless you were super savvy (like Obes maybe?) and tried beforehand. but enough flexing of epeens, I merely pointed that out to highlight Obes s*** attempt to talk down to others as per f*****g usual.

The lenovo Y50 is a great option for a gaming laptop it's pretty thin and I've had it now for about a year and love it.

I'm not too plussed by the laptop my eldest child currently uses.

it doesn't handle x265 well, though I'm suspect this is just a software issue.

she shows promise with her creativity and command of her laptop.

I will upgrade her to a decent workstation if she continues to follow on. She's approaching "boy age" though..

she is *oh* on subject... the laptop cost me $725AU

It's an Asus i5 with an NVnida 820Mobile GPU.

it came with UEFI switch in the bios.

There is no such thing as a $750 laptop gaming device ... A good video card costs more (and the PSU to drive it is in the ballpark)

The cheapest best gaming rig I have seen is the Alienware Alpha ... hands down unopposed. But you will not see a review of it here because ... no one has an erotic or cash reason to write review. *cash for comments*

The moronic hardware vendors cut dual band wireless as the first thing.

If you are using 2.4G on a portable device and think you are gaming ... Hi stegosaurus...

It is slower.
The latency is higher.
And the battery length is reduced.

You fix it by buying a $40 USB device... But yeah I am being being bitter.
