Most of what is out could be played on that. Just not on the best settings.

But could most games be played on the basic settings, it only costs $1300

Gaming laptops are never the equivalent of a PC, even at the "same" specs. Laptops use cut down versions of video cards & CPUs, hence the 'M' on the video card, meaning "mobile". If they used a full version there'd be too much heat and power requirements so even if you compare it to a PC of the same specs, it'll never be equal in terms of game performance.

You might end up playing the latest and greatest games on the lowest possible quality settings if the game is taxing on a high end PC. If the game runs fine on a medium end PC then you might have more luck with it.

is it an MSI brand laptop?

Yea it is an msi laptop.

Thought so, judging by that marketing hype

I dunno what the new ones are like but my MSI "gaming" laptop is ok. Runs hot while gaming but hasn't crashed, but the keyboard isn't all that. The ctrl key is buggered and doesn't respond half the time (it gets a LOT of use), the sound isn't the best but it's adequate.

The 850M is pretty sad by the looks of it.

The 850M is terrible, your i7 would be wasted when it comes to gaming purposes. In other words, as a gaming system, that laptop is way out of balance.
