so my laziness has come back to bite me in the ass

a few years ago now I upgraded to the first generation i5 2500 chips and a 1155 pin board, one of the boards that had the dodgey 3gb/s SATA ports that would eventually fail - well mine all failed a while ago but I have just pushed on with the 2 x 6bg/s for my ssd and hdd.

I now want to upgrade both of those hard drives as well as i'm going to need to plug my cd drive in at some point to install windows lul and I want to plug the old hard drive in at the same so I can transfer stuff over to the new drives so it is time to bite the bullet and buy a new mobo

so my problem is, will any new 1155 mother board accept my older first gen chip? I've noticed some of the boards on the umart site say they support the 2nd and 3rd gen - does that mean exclusively or can I get any one of the new boards and plug my chip in and go ?

thx

Difference in a 2500 to 3770? Not enough to spend the money on upgrading.

I went from a 920 to 3770 for similar reasons - everything on my board kept dying (first the onboard audio, then the ethernet controller) and in actual performance difference there's SFA - but I had to buy an 1155 board because 920 is 1366. At the time the 38xx compatible boards were too expensive to justify.

well this was a recognized problem with the boards when the sandy bridge cpu's first came out, can't remember if it was asus only or wide spread but I could have taken the board back to be replaced but I never did

LGA 1155 motherboard will support an 1155 cpu no matter which generation it is.... excluding Haswell though that goes with LGA 1150

Why bothering with a CD/DVD drive Pave? Just load the windows ISO onto a bootable USB stick and be done with it. I haven't used a cd/dvd to install software for a few years now, don't even have one in my PC anymore.

Been ages since I've installed anything from disc (last format). But I burn games, 3d blu-rays and music CDs all the time.
