advice on mechanical keyboards
Yoh fellas, so my keyboard seems to be disliking life atm so i figured i'd upgrade and get a new one.
Leaning towards the mechanical type, my mate had a razer or something which felt good but he's had a few problems with it and that seems to be common with that brand so i was looking for opinions. So far the ones i've heard nothing but good about are Noppoo Choc Mini Ducky DK9008 Filco Majestouch Just wanted to see if anyone has used any of these before or had good experience with something else. |

People seem to bad mouth the razer ones a lot, but I dunno if thats just because its become the popular thing to do or if there really is a lot of problems with them. All I know is personally, mines been awesome. Its possible I might just be in the minority though.

I have the Razer Blackwidow 2013 (not the ultimate version or whatever). Honestly, it's been a really good keyboard so far (have had it for 4-5 months or so), I'd definitely recommend it.
I did a fair bit of research on this before buying as I wanted a keyboard that'll last me a good while. The Blackwidow seems the only good, decently priced keyboard in Razer's range. The DeathStalker seems okay, but it's f*****g expensive. Don't get the Lycosa, it's got a lot of bad reviews and simply, just sucks ass. So yeah, tl;dr - I have a razer blackwidow 2013 and it's been really good so far. would recommend |

I had some stupid key problems with my razer blackwidow. While I believe I have fixed them now it was really annoying to do so. Apparently the steelseries one is meant to be good but then again there is a new blackwidow which lights up green and has a usb and headphone jack in the side if that's your thing.

generally even if they're really popular when i hear a lot of complaints i tend to stay clear, they're complaints for a reason Of course, it could just be a higher volume of complaints, because theres more of them out there than the other brands. Worth looking into is the different switches that the keyboards use, I think theres 3 of 4 different types of switches that have varying amounts of tactile feedback and make varying amounts of noise, so thats something you probably want to get right. |

Agree on first bit, I have a black widow Ultimate and it's never set a foot wrong. It's quite sexy. Second on that, the most common switch types are as follows: Blue - Loud typing noise, tactile clicking - Best for typing a lot Brown - Low typing noise, tactile clicking - Good for a mix between gaming and lots of typing Black - Low typing noise, no tactile clicking. - Good for gaming. IIRC, I have the browns on my BW:U , they feel very nice compared to all the old membrane keyboards I used to use, they don't wake the neighbours at 2am and yet they still have that satisfying clicking sound + feel of mechanical keys. |

Steelseries 6gv2 would be my recommendation. I use one of these, it weighs a lot and feels solid enough to strike your opponent into a coma should you rage enough to hit him with it. My last keyboard lasted 10 years, this one i assume to last about as long. For 80 dollars or so that i spent on it, that's not a lot of money. It outlasts every other component including monitors and mice. Spend a little on the one thing which will last. |

A good keyboard and mouse combo with the right height of monitor makes a huge difference. |

i have a Leopold FC700R Mechanical Keyboard Graphite (Cherry Brown) without the number pad.
picked it up from PC Case Gear. They have a pretty good selection of mechanical keyboards. I got a mechanical keyboard after the knuckles in my index and middle fingers on both hands started getting sore from typing all day and bottoming out the keys on cheaply made keyboards (Logitech G15). I read a lot about the different type of switches and ended up going with browns for a balance of clickyness and quietness. Once I adjusted to the keyboard and the feel/click of the keys i found it much more comfortable to type on and now really hate typing for any length of time on anything else. The lack of number pad lets me use the mouse in a much more central location instead of off to the right which i find much more comfortable on my shoulder. |

wow, you people have way too much money. yeah, it might do the job, much like say a diahatsu move can get you from a - b, however if your can afford it, you'd be in a better car much like the keyboard |

Mechanical keyboards aren't that nice for typing in my opinion. Could be the cherry mx things, but it's fantastic four games. The pressure required to hit a key is very low and linear so even my pinky finger during sc2 is reliable for pressing time critical keys.

You sound like you're just referring to the (linear) cherry mx black or red switches skythra?
The blue and browns are tactile so they're much nicer for typing. |

I was one of those I'm not spending $150 on a keyboard, but, after using one I found I couldn't go back.
In all seriousness go and try em out if you can. I read heaps about them, but, I was lucky and had three mates with them to try out before purchasing mine. I've had a Filco Majestouch 2 with brown switches at home for gaming with for over a year now & it was worth every cent. My only gripe is it has no usb ports. http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=113_1421&products_id=20691 So when I wanted one for work I bought a Das Keyboard with brown switches. It has been just as good, and has side usb ports. My only gripe is its very glossy and scratches easliy. http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=113_1224&products_id=21581 Why brown switches - I love the feel of blue switches but the loud pop upon key press is annoying. Browns have a nice feel (some resistance but not heaps) and the only click you hear is the actual key bottoming out - while the blues have similar resistance but when you get key half depressed it pops loudly. Black switches are even harder to depress than browns and have no popping click noise. |

Yeah I've been wondering if Razer fixed the key combos by putting more capacitors on the printed circuit board (Hence why releasing another keyboard for 2013). Hence making more combos work and making it work more effectively like the Filco and Ducky ones. Yes I do own Razer, Ducky, Filco and Steelseries 7G (Black Switch). I also bought them over a series of years and not all in one go. I have a Ducky shine cherry brown mx. with blue led. Awesome keyboard. Although, i haven't used any other mechs to give a comparison.
