Home Theatre Setup

Well basically, I need some help with a home theater setup.

Firstly, I have very little experience when it comes to home theater setups. My own personal setup consits of my deskop pc / ps3 / bravia 32" + logitech 5.1 (into pc).

I went over to my mates place tonight to help him setup his new LG surround sound system to his LG Smart TV. (hes a plasterer/painter and has nfi basically heh).

So first things first, I unplugged everything. I positioned all the speakers in the correct area and wired everything up.

Turned it on, tested the audio and the rear speakers weren't working, so I followed the setup insructions. (Hold stop on the blueray unit + mute on the remote - then go over to the wireless receiver and press the pairing button) which I did. A light flashes on the main unit itself and it says "REMATE" and then stops about one minute later. However the wireless receiver still flashes red/blue for like 5 minutes then I switched it off and repeated the process at least 10 times.

I even moved the wireless receiver within 1 meter of the unit and it still did not work. Everything else was fine. I did a google search and many people said they had the same issue. Someone mentioned buying a new wireless receiver / replacing it etc, but f*** that when both products are less than 6 months old and the sales person said they match up perfectly fine.

I turnd everything off for 5 minutes, re-inserted the wireless card into the unit etc. But still nothing.

So I am dare saying that some wireless receiver etc may have died?

I have the blueray/surround sound remote control the actual TV itself, so it must be compatible.

Other questions I have -

- A smart tv does not do free-to-air tv does it? - There is an antenna port, but it says FM Antenna. (want free-to-air tv via 5.1)
- Also, wtf is the optical cable for?? It's audio only isn't it? HDMI is obviously the superior option?
- There is a front usb port + a 3.5mm headphone jack?? A cord came with it which is an AV cord but has a headphone jack on the end?

Haha I feel noob.

HELP IS GREAT!

*edit* - I am pretty sure this is the setup - http://www.lg.com/au/home-theatre-systems/lg-BH6520TW-home-theatre-system

Free to air would only give you 5.1 if it was broadcast in 5.1 audio. Some receivers can do some trickery to make a stereo signal into surround (mine does this).

also you plug the TV antenna into the.... wait for it..... waaait for iiiiit.....INTO THE TV.
Someone mentioned buying a new wireless receiver / replacing it etc, but f*** that when both products are less than 6 months old and the sales person said they match up perfectly fine.
So you or your mate has had this gear sitting around for 6 months and never used it before? Or was it in use and you guys just moved it or what?

What is the optical cable on what for? Could be audio in, could be audio out, depends which device you're talking about. On my TV it's audio out for when you use the TV antenna, or an analog source. It either plays audio through the TV speakers, or you can tell it to output the audio through the optical cable.

The AV - headphone cable is just that, an av to headphone jack adapter. Read the f*****g manual already. You plug an analog source into the RCA cables, the headphone plug into the port on the TV / Receiver. The front headphone jack is probably for plugging in headphones. It's all in the user manual

I suppose as an example this is how mine is set up. I don't have an all-in-one bd / av receiver / dvr / tuner because I think they're s***, if one feature breaks, you have to replace the entire unit, not just a single component.

Antenna -> TV's antenna port
Foxtel -> TV's analog input via that RCA - headphone's looking plug adapter (it's not actually a headphone plug, has more conductors)
BD player -> AV Receiver through HDMI
AV Receiver -> TV through HDMI ARC port (not a regular HDMI port)

TV is set to output any and all audio through HDMI ARC, this outputs any audio from foxtel and free to air back through the audio return channel on the HDMI lead it's connected to the receiver through. There's an option to use optical for this task but I figured why bother, it's an extra cable.

yeah pretty much if you want surround frm the TV you will need a digital output to the amp from whatever is reciving the TV signal be that the tv or set top box or foxtel.

also, read the manual or at least look at the wiring setup diagram in there..

Is there a switch on the rear speakers for changing the channel (a,b,c or 1,2,3)? If there is make sure it is the same channel as the amp is outputting to.

Smart tv should do free to air tv from the antenna and Internet tv from the network cable.

Use hdmi, optical cable is just another option for some devices customers might have.

By av cord do you mean white/red to 3.5 end? Same as the optical cable, for other devices to be plugged into it.

also hdmi should work fine. íf you want surround from a stereo signal like most s*** is broadcast just enable dolby pro logic on the amp or some kind of virtual surround. there will be a option somewhere.

Also what a pox surround system.
according to that link:
1 composite (not that unusual, except for that it apparently only does video. F*****g LOL***).
1 ethernet (again, not unusual)
1 FM antenna
1 optical in. One. Yes, just one.
1 HDMI out. What, no input? lolwut.
Wireless speaker dongle input. ???

So basically they've said here, this is an all in one unit, you don't need any of that other fancy input stuffs like the other guys have. Forget plugging your PC's audio in, or a DVR.

*** I know composite IS video, but there's no mention of analog audio inputs to go with the composite video input.

I am assuming your mate thought he could run the TV through the player, change channels maybe, hence the question in the OP.

Not with that set up. It's not a PVR or similar it has no TV tuner or even connections according to the specs. If he was sold on that take it back.

Yes optical is sound and you need a specific cable for that. But just use HDMI where you can.

What everyone else says goes for general set up. And as whoop says its pretty limited in its input/output options. Seems like a lot of money for a limited device.

Manual has no info on speakers and anything else really. And it is in bad engrish.

So no free-to-air via the TV then. The guy has a smart TV and no internetz lol. Just the surround sound / blueray + an xbox360.

He's had the tv for 6 months and the surround sound for 3 weeks.

So to even play xbox360 will have to be without the 5.1 system etc I guess.

(Btw I wrote the post late and pissed)

I'd say so. looks like it's dedicated to output the BR player. he needs a real AV HT like a Yamaha of Onkyo or Denon.

Because it's video out! not everybody's TV has hdmi so they have to watch their blu-ray videos through... composite :(

1 HDMI out. What, no input? lolwut.

it's a blu-ray player, why would it have an hdmi in?

1 optical in. One. Yes, just one.

For TVs without ARC. my old man's panasonic doesn't have ARC so has to use optical...

LG Smart TVs has FTA, smarttv just means it will do DLNA/youtube/internet video etc as well.

X-box will be plugged into the TV and as mentioned earlier the ARC/optical audio will pump the xbox sound to the 5.1 system.

I'd say so. looks like it's dedicated to output the BR player. he needs a real AV HT like a Yamaha of Onkyo or Denon.

Don't listen to this! The setup is perfectly valid, it just uses the inputs on the TV instead of on the receiver. I have this exact same type of setup at home, albeit with a samsung BD+5.1, sony tv and wdtv live. The wdtv plugs into the TV, the TV plugs into the samsung, and all the audio comes out the 5.1 speakers (when source is 5.1 of course). I had to enable "HDMI Control" on the TV, so when I turn the TV on, it turns the samsung receiver on and then enabled the remote speaker system. the sony TV remote control changes the volume/mutes/selects inputs on the samsung receiver. it's like magic.

do you know the model number of the TV?

Never heard of HDMI passthrough? The idea is if you are limited on the number of HDMI ports you have, you can use another device to passthrough to say, a receiver or pre-processor.

For ex.

Receiver has 1 HDMI in and 1 HDMI out. HDMI out goes from receiver to TV HDMI in. I plug blu-ray player in to the HDMI in on the receiver. I plug xbox to HDMI in on blu-ray player. It sends signals down the HDMI out from the blu-ray player and works exactly as if you plugged it in to the receiver.

I have no idea why they make systems with so limited a number of inputs.

I have even less idea why anyone would buy it.

I had, a TV and a WDTV Live... I wanted, 5.1 surround sound and a blu-ray player... solution, a bluray player with 5.1 surround speakers which also allows the TV and WDTV sound to come out the 5.1! omfg it's like the perfect solution without a million inputs and outputs i'll never use.

What about the manual for the TV, that should tell you how to get free to air channels.I call bulls*** on the manual being useless. There should at least be a basic setup guide, even if it's an online user manual in PDF form somewhere on the internet. All my s*** came with quick setup guides with wiring diagrams and a separate full user manual, or a bit of paper telling me where to download the user manual.

You don't need the internet to get free to air, just plug your roof antenna into the TV and do an auto search for the stations.

The 360 can be in 5.1 if you hook it up properly and set the receiver to pro logic or whatever that guy mentioned earlier (mine's got like 3 or 4 different stereo -> pseudo 5.1 modes).

I always used to wonder who would pay those guys who set up home theatre systems and now I guess I know. Not trying to sound like a d*** but if you can't even figure out how to plug a TV antenna in, I don't think you should even be touching anything electrical at all.

If those are the steps are following then you're missing one step I think. Sorry if you just didn't write it correctly but the instructions say:

1. Hold stop and Mute as you've done so it displays REMATE.
2. Press PAIRING on the back of the RX (LED will flicker)
3. Power cycle the unit - are you doing this step?? You will need to power cycle BEFORE the blu-ray drops it's LED.
4. Receiver LED is on.

Herron; I stated that in the original post.

Tried everything basically, I believe the equipment is now faulty haha. I don't personally like lg myself.

Faceman; if that is the thread about the wireless bits n pieces being swapped etc, I am not up for doing that kind of thing :P the blueray etc is only 3 weeks old so. (which is the dvd/blueray/smart tv box etc + speakers + wireless receiver etc.

The light on the main unit was flickering, I was waiting for either the unit / wireless receiver to change the flickering status etc. The main unit would stop flashing, but the wireless receiver still flashd blue/red.

Then I turned the unit off. and back on. - only thing I can think of is if I was to switch the unit off whilst the light was flashing instead of stopping afterwards, but that would mean it would show no intial acknowledgement that it had connected etc

meh anyway

That's what the instructions tell you to do! The steps you said in the OP are incorrect - if that's what you're doing. You have to turn the unit off and on while the LED is flashing, not after it's timed out. Read the instructions again as I think you are misreading. The connection obviously occurs during the boot-up phase of the receiver.

Press and hold I STOP button on the unit and MUTE button on the remote control simultaneously.
- Displays the “REMATE”.
2. Press PAIRING on back of the wireless receiver.
- The blue or yellow LED will flicker
3. Turn off and on the unit.
- If you see “blue or yellow” LED, it’ s successful.
4. If you don’t see “blue or yellow” LED, try again Step 1 - Step 3.

I think it means you're meant to turn the wireless receiver off? Not the main unit.? Which one did you turn off?

Also you're full of s*** when you say the manual has no info. I'm reading it right now and it tells you everything you need to know about which connections go where. It has wiring diagrams that tell you what the optical cable is for, what the RCA cables are for, the headphone jack cable. Everything. Learn how to read.

I reckon it means turn it off as soon as you see the LED flicker. It says to press it until it flickers, then turn it off. Like you said, it doesn't say to wait until it stops flickering.

Well it refers to the main unit as "The unit"

And the wireless receiver as "wireless receiver"

And it says to "switch off the unit".

So, I was switching off the main unit.

There is no power button on the wireless receiver, so you would have to switch it off at the power.

RED/BLUE flashes on the wireless receiver (indicating pairing mode) and then an orange led will flash on the main unit, then it stops after 1 minute (on the main unit) thats when I was switching it off, not whilst it was still flashing.

Well it does say to just turn everything on when you first set it up so presumably the wireless thing goes into pairing mode when you first plug it in, then when you turn on the main unit it sees the wireless thing and pairs with it. So try that, re-mate the thing, leave the wireless thing on, turn off the main thing as soon as pairing starts, then back on again right away.

I did the remate process like 10 times, and the wireless unit doesnt go into pairing mode until you press "pairing".

I think I was just switching the unit off too late.
