My brother and his wife live down the coastand I am going to setup a webcam at my parents place so they can chat and see their grandson.

I was just going to go the standard logitech one - I can't go wrong with those yeh?

Or is there some other brands worth checking out?

Cheers

It's less about the brand and more about the specific model. Why don't you write down a couple of models that you've seen in stores and look up the reviews yourself on amazon.com?

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=logitech+webcam

Most of the logitech ones seem to be good, but there are a couple that have some issues that may or may not affect you. e.g. Logitech Quickcam Deluxe (here), quoted to have some really bloated and terrible software.

Just make sure you avoid these and stick to the models that are rated well by users with a high sample size and you'll be right. e.g. the HD C310, C910, Pro 9000 are all rated at 4.5 stars with 477, 726 and 1705 user reviews respectively - so chances are you will probably be happy with them.

I got into dealextreme quite heavily, until I looked more carefully at the items and realised that >50% of the stuff I got were cheap chinese knockoffs of the brands I though they were or were quoted at being. Careful!

Yes but soooooo cheap. Having said that there is no way I would buy anything from there that used enough juice to cause a fire.

Yeah you can spend <$10 (no idea if I got that symbol right) and get a webcam that will perform just as well as that $59 one. I know you have been a corrupt banker for a long time and have more bling than a gangsta party but every penny counts ya know?

I can only say that if you get a webcam without focus (one of the ininity focus ones) then you're doing it wrong.

I think webcams are s*** all around, but what other choice do you have?

In the last 10 years phones have gone from 0.3mpixel to <12mpixel cameras (depending on how camera focused the phone is) while webcams have been happy to keep producing the same s*** grainy 2mp cameras for about the same time..

Because people who want webcams want small video size for using in skype & talking to the grand kids, people who want high-def go buy more expensive IP cameras or convert their camcorders.

$59 isn't that much, I was prepared to pay double that.

I just need something idiot proof, my mum and dad don't really use a computer so it needs to be pretty simple otherwise they won't use it. I don't want some no name thing that has no drivers or has compatibility issues, I just want to set it up, show them the bare minimum and have it work flawlessly with little or no intervention from me.

Do the google tv's come with a webcam?

Not saying go out and buy a new tv to get a webcam, but if a new tv is also on the plates in the near future it is something to keep in mind.

The logitech TV webcam would be fairly idiot proof, older people get used to do things on tv a lot faster/easier than on a computer.

I have this cheapo $7 thing.

It's fine. Quality is poor but it's not like pristine 720p video is necessary and on most Australian internet connections you ain't gonna be sending pristine 720p video. It's about on par with camera built into my Macbook Pro from 2007. Also has a built-in mic which is low quality but handy.

Obviously if you have the money to spend, I guess you could get something nicer. But I dunno, it's probably worth spending the money you save on a neato cheapy Android 4.0 tablet. From what I've read they're actually not too bad. Not going to be playing cutting edge games on it but good for casual use.

Alternately you can get one of these for a TV or a spare HDMI capable computer monitor.

Or just get 80 of these I don't f*****g care. Dealextreme is awesome go give them all your dirty westerner money.

... I do. What's your point?

No need to go full retard when i was just raising a question about the webcam industry. Perhaps even suggesting that there would be a niche for all the youtubers who don't want a full fledged digital camera, but might want to shoot in higher quality while making their little videos.

Not sure what enraged you to burst out like i called your mother a lesbian and your parents marriage a sham, but whatever.
