Hi as per subject i am chasing some IP cams, they need to be IR + POE and under $300 theres so many choices on google, ebay etc.. any products/places people can recommend? tia |
G for that price I would want ptz aswell.
I paid $150 for http://www.kiirie.com/Products.asp?id=81 a while ago the camera works they have cheaper ones too just email them for prices. |
Geovision and Vivotek are both sold by Altech, I have only personally used the Geovision ones. Cant complain about them at all. Had the usual faulty couple due t o water (bad installation) but that's about it. Not sure what they are selling for these days as I dont have an account with them any more.
|
also can anyone recommend any decent software to use with them?
|
I'll be looking to buy a system to install in my new house as well, but when I looked at them at the home show there was a variety of options ranging from $1200 to $2500 for four-camera set-ups.
In addition to the cameras, does anyone want to recommend a dedicated DVR that also does the "normal" stuff these days like streaming to remote locations, remote access/viewing, tagging motion-sensed sections of video tracks, playback etc? |
Hi as per subject i am chasing some IP cams, they need to be IR + POE and under $300 I use a Foscam FI8910W ($115): http://store.mangocam.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=67 Not the highest resolution but can view live footage from my android phone, as well as have the motion detection feature trigger an email of photos, etc. Good for keeping an eye on the house, but it depends what your application is (the same site sells more outdoor-y units as well) The 720p version is a day or two away: http://store.mangocam.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=91 last edited by parabol at 13:32:40 29/Aug/12 |
Thanks for that supplier, parabol, looks good.

When I heard about the Raspberry Pi that was the sort of thing I would imagine it being great at. |
Give some options. Considering I've been looking at $1200-$2500 anyway for a 4 camera system, I'm happy to look at options in that range.
Preference is to digital >=720p cameras. PoE is a nice-to-have. I *do not* want a PC running sofware/cards to do the trick, I'll only look at dedicated hardware. |
Somehow having my NVR as my router to the internet doesn't make sense.
Just saying. My router will port forward my NVR's port to access it's precious stream from afar sure, but it itself isn't a router like your fantastic diagram suggests. |
You sure got that right! But seriously, it doesn't sit between everything on my network and the internet. Just suggesting that it's mostly a pic for marketing which makes no real sense in a network topology.
Here's my pic (PC)-----------------------| Maybe.. edit missing the 'video server' which has to submit the stream it seems in my diagram :D |
Hah how funny that I see this thread AFTER buying one of these:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251039432044?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 Which I presume is a cheap chinese knockoff (since these are indeed made in china) of one of these: http://store.mangocam.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=33&product_id=50 All I can say is, for the $57 it's not bad, but you can't watch live video while connected with wifi, the cpu can't take it and the camera crashes. Also the software is atrocious. But for a little bit of fun it was well worth it. I have been spying on the pets and maybe plan to mount it outside to watch the front yard but the requirement of a network cable is making me rethink that. |
All I can say is, for the $57 it's not bad, but you can't watch live video while connected with wifi, the cpu can't take it and the camera crashes. The Foscam cameras are one of the most copied/cloned ones on the market. I'm almost certain you got a fake. Some of the fakes have even cloned the Foscam packaging - the only way to avoid one is to buy from a known official reseller (like Mangocam). Last I checked mine had an uptime of over 3 months and was streaming over WiFi exclusively without missing a beat. One bug is that the camera stops responding to ARP packets randomly, so it appears to crash. However it's still working, but other computers don't know it's there. A quick fix is to add a static ARP entry on your router for the camera, and then all is well. |
It's more likely that I would put all the IP cameras on their own isolated physical network, with a single port allowed access to the 2821. The DVR would sit on the same side of that network, allowing it to be completely isolated from all other data and VoIP/SIP traffic.
In terms of cameras I guess you'd need to decide on what the chosen NVR will support and go from there. It seems that most megapixel IP cameras will support POE and you could get an injector cheap for them as required. That's pretty cool - I'll keep that in mind... but I'll be running a Cisco PoE NM, so it will probably be largely unnecessary. Matt is keen on using RouterBoard gear rather than Cisco though. last edited by Raven at 10:12:46 30/Aug/12 |

Don't get me wrong, I realised I was getting the world's cheapest worst knockoff, but that's ok. It's quite interesting to watch the ping times go from 1-2ms sitting normally and then going up to 300-500ms while watching live video then about 40 seconds later, crash. |
Highly recommend http://www.zoneminder.com/ simple and works
If money is no object then mobotix camera's are the go for sure |
i need 2 cams that will plug into a raptor environet to monitor a server room in auckland so distance isn't as important as IR and probably 720p

Just buy something like http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/HDC632-With-POE-with-SD-Card-Recording-Varifocal-Lens-2megapixel-IP-camera-resolution-to-1600-1200/608234_565366942.html They do motion detection on set areas so you can point it out the front door and if it detect someones feet it will start recording, not every time someone drives past. On some of the cameras they have an alarm input so you can hook it up to the doorbell so it take a photo every time someone rings the door bell. I have a couple of camera's from Kiirie you can stick a sd card on them and just have them record that way if you put a small ups on your poe switch and someone turn's your power off you will still get an alert. They also sell 4 channel pvr's for as little as $50. it all comes from china anyway so you might as well buy direct. |
