3G/4G Dongle into a WIFI router?

Hey guys,

I am plagued by this question and totally confused myself so I will best explain it;

Ok, we all know that (example) you can buy 3g/4g devices from Telstra. I.e. wifi and usb.

We continuously get people who expect to be able to just plug their USB modem into their tablet etc and expect it to work.

As I explain, yes it may get power, but you physically have to click "Connect" on your computer for the device to allow traffic etc.

I am just presuming that this is kind of code that is sent to the device - and within the connection manager where you click connect, the bigpond devices also have a username/password associated with them.

Obviously plugging a usb device into an android tablet etc will do nothing because there is no mac/win platform for drivers/software to install.

However I have heard that people have said you can plug the USB 4G modem into the latest technicolor adsl modem by telstra (example if you are waiting for adsl to be connected etc).. you plug it in. which will give you wifi access via the router itself. but use the usb modem as the connection.

- Needless to say a customer had been to good guys today and they sold her like some 3g/4g wifi router and it says that you plug the usb stick into it and it will utilize the 3g data connection but share it via wifi.

As the customer was given a wifi only ipad and would like to use it on the go etc.

Simply, from my experience I am expecting this to give the same result, not being able to tell the modem to connect and transefer the data etc... (as no matter what when you plug your usb modem into another pc it says it hasnt been registered and you have to do a little trick to bypass that)... obviously no way of telling the WIFI 3G router thing that it doesnt need activating?

Argh!! I hope I make sense, it has been one hell of a week and I am just looking for a simple yes or no answer lol... as I feel confused.

Anyone ever done anything similar or can think of any ideas will be appreciated!@

I imagine the wifi router has some kind of configuration webpage where you can configure the 3g stick and connect the account.

Im pretty sure you'd have to use telstra's own connection manager software for it to tell the stick to allow traffic or what not?

She'll be coming back tomorrow after she speaks to her i.t. guy.. ive never heard or seen anyone do it successfully so

Is it an android tablet? Many of the generic dongles work, but the telstra ones i don't think do.

Edit: just take the dongle away from them and return with a few hundred dollar bill and a pocket wifi.

There's heaps around i had one while in japan and they're just becoming popular here now too.

Nah she has a wifi only ipad and goodguys sold her some kind of wifi/3gusb dongle router thing.

Simple fact is, it would mean paying early termination fee's more than likely, bigpond dont really like swapping devices etc.

as they are married in their system, you cant just buy a bigpond wifi modem and put your sim in it.

She can stay on the contract, sell the dongle they gave on ebay, and buy a pocket wifi.

It'll take her sim and acts as a wifi hotspot.

Edit: Just had a thought, i think the bigpond and the telstra mobile stuff works different now you mention it, i've used that hotspot before but on a business 3g data sim. The business software doesn't have logins and stuff, but the customer variants uses different software which does.

My bad!

This s*** makes no sense at all. She has a 3g usb dongle? They sold her a wifi modem? She wants to use her ipad on the go? Is the router battery powered or something?

Presumably she has a smart phone, just put her on a data plan & turn on the wifi hotspot on her phone, with detailed instructions on how to secure it and disable it when it's not in use.

I've set a few of these up for clients. You won't need to re-register the usb modem when you put it into a 3g/4g wifi router. It only asks you to with the bigpond/telstra mobile broadband software when ever you put it into a new pc. In which case you bypass that by holding shift when you press options and a hidden tab shows up which allows you skip registration.

Sounds like fun, carrying around all that extra s***. Just tell her to ebay the ipad & buy a 3g version. By the time she's wasted all this time and money on extra crap, the money she saved by not getting a 3g version ipad will be spent double d***ing around with dongles, modems and whatever.

Yeah right, thats exactly kind of it Lithium.

Yours looks like a TMB (business?) which only has a SIM PIN, which u can remove by putting into a mobile phone etc.

(still pretty sure we will have to tell the usb modem what user/password but)..

I know how to bypass the register crap, and I don't think an unlocked wifi hotspot modem wouldn't work either I don't think..

You have a USB modem, you plug into a pc and follow a registration process. - including inputting a username/password.

If you format your pc or plug into another PC the registration process won't work because it's already been done etc.

You fix it by holding down SHIFT and clicking tools options and ticking a box under diagnosis.

Then you have to go across to account and enter username/password.

Then it will let you "Connect Now".

So..

#%*()W$%&*)W#$^$W#*^&*(%

*edit*

thermite, adsl isn't available to everyone.

RUSTA does that stuff get bypassed when you put the sim into a mobile device like a phone or a 3g wifi modem? Or does it only get bypassed from some kind of software trickery?

Try the sim in an unlocked (or telstra) phone and if it gets 3g and has internet when the apn is set to internet.telstra then you should be able to use what i posted (which has the APN settings). If it doesn't work then tell her that she got a lemon and should make lemonades.

As in grenades made of lemons.

That only happens on business 3g or Mobile sims. When it's BIGPOND internet it's different to telstra internet.

Telstra business requires no auths but BIGPOND does.

F**pond more like.

Completely ignores it. So yes into a mobile phone or tablet with a spot for a sim will work. Which i think is what Murderer is asking about. If i understand him correctly. He won't have to worry about registering the the usb modem when connected to a 3g/4g wifi router (Litiums setup). Just plug it in. Login to the routers internal web interface. go to the inbuilt connection manager with in the router select the provider and APN. connect the ipad to the routers wifi network to access internet around the house.

Well I must say....

I have had some luck.

I had to run home get my laptop because the pc's at work don't have cd drives.

Put cd in and followed prompts, everything was quite straight forward and easy.

So the laptop I set it up on, says yes connected to modem and has internet access.

But, I cannot connect using my s3, iphone or the other laptop at work.

Just get an authentication error? Have tried all passwords associated.

I don't fully understand the aspect of security, SPA,WPA,WPA2 but I noticed this one has WPA2 and all the other wifi's around are WPA. - I could not find anyway to change the security settings for that or find anything bleedingly obvious as to why nothing will connect apart from the laptop I set it up on.

Any more ideas?? LOL

you'll need the wpa key, you need to enter that into the device you're trying to connect.

the device should auto detect wpa/wpa2 - tkip/aes but will ask you for the password, this is NOT (usually) the account password, but a password YOU select when you turn on the security of the router.

Having no bloody clue about what you're even doing, what device you're using, I can't offer any more than that.

WELL ITS FINALLY F*****G WORKING NOW.

Except, the speeds seem about 1/3 the speed I am getting with my 4g device.

Dunno if using the router would effect the speed?

But anyway, thanks for your help on this one guys :)

telstra dongles, while they use a connection manager if you install them in windows, can just work with pppd in linux if you supply a username/password.

they act like a dialup modem, i would therefore assume if you can configure a username and password for them on an adsl router that supports usb wifi that it would work.

also, alternatively, get a raspberry pi and run wireless internet sharing from that with iptables, easy as.

this is what we use at work for our sites. configure to duel wan, with adsl and 3g fallover, Configure the fallover to be always on, set the APN name correctly and the connection should work, you don't need username / password unless your plan requires it (optus, for example use a walled garden, you input your username and password into the webpage before it lets you out to roam free on the wild plains of the interweb.)

Also, i thought IPads had a slot for a simcard so you could use mobile data through them? seems like a pretty major shortfall for a modern device.
