My brother has a HP Pavilion dv6 laptop and he works for himself (consultant), he plans on working from home quite a bit more so wants to get a docking station. I've checked a few websites (Megabuy, MSY etc) and they have multiple options and none really list what models are compatible with the dock.

On the HP site it says this USB port replicator is the only one compatible but surely there is a dock? Or do they make them for the business models and not the 'home user' models?

So you don't have to plug/replug multiple accessories when taking and replacing the laptop. Just pop it in.

In most cases a USB hub would do the job, but they put a few extra bells and whistles on, more kinds of ports/plugs, speakers, etc..

At work our pc's are laptops in docks, so we take laptop home/work etc have the benefits of a desktop at work and portability when we go away/at home.

Toshiba replicator we have has USB 2/3(4 ports) + Ethernet + hdmi / VGA (shame no dvi) but its fine still manages dual monitor nicely.
