We have 2 50P servers, except one isnt, its 54P and for the life of me I cant work out why.

They both have commander true, MaxSpectactors =2 and allowspectators=false. In fact both startup.txt are identical.

One correctly says 50P, as its reserved 2 commander and 2 spectator slots, the other however always says 54 players?

Weirdly when we had it set to 58 players it was perfect, as its a 62slot server, this only happened when we reduced may players down to 54, the same as our other server.

Here's how its calculated.

203.46.105.21:22500
Details:
Paid: 54 slots
vars.maxPlayers 54
vars.maxSpectators 2
vars.commander true (basically 2).

Calculation:
54 Players + 2 Spectators + 2 Commanders = 58.
Paid for 54, so dropped to 54.
54 - 2 spectators - 2 commanders = 50 BattleLog Players.

"vars.alwaysAllowSpectators false" means that spectators need to be in the approved list to join as a spectator, but this doesn't change the slot allocation; even if you have 0 people in the approved list, you still are allocating 2 spectator slots.

Ah, thats the sound of a penny dropping!, so the extra paid for slots get used to provide the spectators and commander slots, clever, thanks for the clear explanation.

Quite happy with that, as we wanted the smaller server to work out to 5x5man squads per side.
