Server Lag?

Anyone else getting complaints about lag since latest update?

Had 30+ people come to me in the last hour or two about really bad server lag on BF4, not just on one map either.

Update issues? or Something happening on serverside?

We are actually running less servers per host today than over the weekend, so this is something new, probably related in some way to the new server build.

If you do have a chance, note down if there is any specific map that seems to be worse than others, it may be map related. We'll go through the logs in detail tomorrow morning; we have a tool that gives us a detailed look at how every BF4 (and BF3) server performs, so we'll be able to find anything amiss on our end.

Time here is 9pm AEST, (Brissy Time), the server is full with 5 people in the queue ! (Namely the Great 32 player conquest/Rush server)

I put the server back online this afternoon after the R6 patch and it was full fairly quick and has not crashed which is awesome, but as above stated there is still significant lag. 1-3 second Rubber banding occuring (so quite large) everynow and then with small stutters throughout. No complaints thus far.

Details:

Most lag:
Lancang Dam, Terrible throughout. small conquest

Recorded noticable lag:
Golmud Railway, tiny rush

I will continue to record gameplay and post the results to help out.

Just happening again now, everyone in my server 203.46.105.23 is lagging bad all maps.

Been up for a total of 17hours and 5mins without a crash.

Rebooting to check if that helps fix the lag.

I had a chance to play on a server for a few hours last night while watching the CPU and server performance on a second monitor. I'm feeling pretty safe that none of the performance problems are our fault, other than possibly a few servers on the ga0412a host (which we are going to migrate once some new hardware is tested).

I spent a couple of hours today updating my log processing tool to give "lag per map" stats, and it was interesting but not incredibly clear. For example, for the host that syk3 is on (ga0113), MP_Siege (Siege of Shanghai) has 2x more severe lag events than any other map, and 3x more than most of the maps. Journey (Golmud Railway) and Resort (Hainan Resort) are the next two worst by quite a margin. Abandoned (Zavod311) is by far the least laggy, but I think that might be due to it being the default start map, and I'm not certain I've corrected the stats for empty servers.

I'll report all this stuff to DICE later tonight when I've debugged the program a little more.

edit: Added correction for empty servers, and the stats are broadly the same.

This is interesting because these maps are the laggiest client-side for me. I'm not referring to network lag, but even when running well the game feels sluggish compared to others. My SS settings are tweaked to max my system out and most maps feel great but the 3 you firstly mentioned. During this, CPU utilization is typical to other maps, and the GPU's are at about 70% each (also comparatively typical). Quad channel RAM as well so I haven't been able to determine any bottleneck at my end.

Zavod311 feels silky for me in comparison.

----

If it's any help I could make comparative CPU/GPU/FPS charts for each map, but that would take a while.

From what we have noticed on our C13 server (GA0112);

Lancang Dam - Unplayable at all. Lag every 2 seconds, for about 2 seconds. rubber bands like a b****. CPU was at 100% the entire time, start to finish. We have taken it out of rotation it's that bad.

Next worst map _was_ Hanain resort - it was 90% as laggy as Lancang. We did remove it from the list, but recently tested it again, and it seemed ok.

Third worst map would have to be Golmud Railway - only recently started laggy on this map (today, 5/11). Lag spikes every 5 or so seconds, rubber banding all over the place.

Shanghai also crashes most clients (within range?) of the levelution (tower failling down - just as it starts, people crash on mass). We've removed this from our list of maps.

Most other maps seem fine - however we do get frequent crashes all the time, most notably on Locker, and Zavod - possibly due to them being the most concentrated maps in terms of infantry fighting / nade spam?

just my observations playing on our server the last week - nothing written down or recorded.

How do you change the player limit to lower? (Don't tell me I've just missed the option).

Our 64 player keeps lagging like crazy when it's full. It's fine with about 50 or so players, but any more and the rubber banding starts.

We are starting to feel the same, either moving to hypernia or waiting it out, however our community wont play on our server till the lag is fixed.

Seems to be only a handful of servers that dont lag under 64player right now and none of them ive seen are with ausgamers.

Last night seen us running 64 player all day right up until ~8pm when complaints come in about lag, now server was full all day (8am -9pm 64 players with atleast 1-2 in que) so i cant say that its the server patch causing issues when at peak times it gets really laggy and not at any other time.

Memory wise our server for yesterday was average at 650mb which would be understandable for a full server.
CPU was at average of ~90% all day, no major spikes or drops.

Another thing to note was the fact noone could connect on the 8th at all took me 3 restarts of the server to get it to allow anyone to join and even after that it was still getting laggy with 10 people on the server.

We went with ausgamers for two reasons,
1. Australian company (not many of them left in this game)
2. They stated limited 64 P servers for order, so we jumped on it asap and expected not many at launch.

Now we are in talks about what to do, its hurting us both financially and socially that we cannot have a decent peak time round on our paid for server, some of our members are asking us to move hosts but we really dont want to at this point giving ausgamers the benifit of the doubt on the matters, considering EA / Dice need to get their sh*t together and fix a poorly released game.

Looking at my server (GA0113) today we hit 100% CPU with 65 players and then the server crashed. It's really getting frustrating. This has happened every day since the game has been out now.

Once it crashes, it never fills back up again. Is there any fix/resolution for this yet? My clan mates who all chip in are starting to ask for answers.

Only server thats not crashing (ish) is our 32p tdm. Today has been really bad with the others.

64p cq normal
64p rush hc
64p operation locker normal
64p server reduced to 48p operation hc. Trying to minimize crashing but not making a difference.

Each of those 4 crashed 4 times today. Lag isn't helping. Even though they tend to fill fast again, eventually our community will look elsewhere to play. Was looking at getting a 6th server but might end up with hypernia by the end of the month if this isn't sorted as I have friends renting with them and they aren't going through what we are. And also having no procon control for 5 days now has pushed me over.

I don't really want to migrate over to hypernia but it doesn't look like much of an option at the moment.

when I signed up here, I understood the setup for servers was suppose to be alot better then GA and I must say, things were alot smoother with GA.

Be good to get an update on this, atm we dont know if we will be going another month with most of this month being either down or full of bugs / lag its just killed us.

I know ausgamers is busy trying to work on things but really would be good to have someone just updating on the situation.

We are currently aware of the severe lag issues affecting some customers alongside the reported crashes, and are working with DICE in order to stabilise the software. Right now we are working on testing some new server hosts to ensure a smoother game experience, and will have more on this situation when we can.

Its doubtful that the mammoth VPS system will be increased, theres not a lot of profit margin @ this price point.

We have simply capped our servers to 50P until more patches hopefully optimise the server code somewhat.

Bonus being that its not as spammy anyhow. :-)

Thats not really a fix when your paying for 70 slots.

If we wanted to run a 50 slot server we would have brought only 50 slots but theres not option to reduce or enlarge your server size without purchasing another server.

I would just like a 64p server that does not lag at peak times.

We change our slot count all the time.

As for 64P Server with no lag, thats waiting for DICE to finish building a decent server build really. No Provider is going to start increasing CPU/RAM to make it run decently right now, or likely ever.

This isn't run on Mammoth VPS. Not now, not ever.

The resources we have allocated to each 70 slot server is more than sufficient to run it perfectly at peak periods. I watch a full 70 slot server perform at an appropriate frame rate only using 70-80% of the CPU resources it is allocated... then it spikes well above 100% and lags for half a second. We can't allocate double the CPU resources to every server to deal with this when it is something that DICE will be able to fix in an upcoming release.

We don't expect people to run less slots than they've paid for, but that seems to be the reality just at the moment.

its not the same maps all the time that starts it. i've seen it start to rubber band on maps such as flood zone, zavod 311, lancang dam and golmud railway.

It continues to rubber band after the map changes, until i get complaints from everyone in the server about it. So its not long before im forced to restart the server, this fixes the rubber banding but leaves the server empty.

I've been observing the cpu% on the stats tab as soon as the rubber banding starts and the cpu usage is 85% and above from what ive seen.

im no tech wiz, all i know is its definitely Rubber banding.

I have faith in the guys that they will fix it soon.

100% CPU in GameCreate is deceptive - that's 100% of one of the cores that your server could be using.

But.

If there is rubberbanding, that's not cool. We'll go through everything in detail tomorrow; I noticed that some of the hosts are getting an uneven share of the busy servers, so we'll find and kill any lag.
