Backing the Game: 2022 Federal Election Policy is a document outline for the Australian government to commit support for the Australian games industry, drafted by the IGEA (Interactive Games and Entertainment Association).
The policy platform asks the Coalition, ALP, Greens and all other parties to factor in the requirements for sustained support and growth of the local Australian games industry as we face a fundamental shift in the sector beyond the upcoming Federal Election.
The policy looks to highlight trade and investment as well as job creation within the games industry, and asks that it be considered among all parties as a key part of the country's creative industries sector.
"Games are an integral part of the lifestyle of many Australians," said IGEA CEO, Ron Curry (via press release). "Not only do the overwhelming majority of Australians enjoy playing games, but a significant economic opportunity abounds for Australians making games and games-adjacent industries.
“Our whole industry has been eagerly awaiting the implementation of the Digital Games Tax Offset since its announcement in last year’s Budget, from highly talented local studios pulling together budgets for their ambitious next project, to global video game companies finalising their proposed investment plans for Australia.
“To complement the tax offset, we also need a long-term commitment to direct funding to support the more early-stage games studios looking to scale their businesses and deliver creative projects. Finally, the huge economic potential presented by a thriving Australian game development sector requires access to skilled employees. Our migration settings should be updated, flexible and welcoming for the specialised employees that are needed.”
You can download the policy platform here, which asks for commitment to legislating the Digital Games Tax Offset, launch of a long term Game Development Fund for emerging creators and studios, and a review of the skilled workers migration system where game development is concerned, among other commitments.
The Federal Election takes place sometime in the first half of 2022.
This is a great initiative. Any policy that transitions our economy from one of resources dug from the ground to one of technology is excellent forward thinking future proof strategy.
