Even after playing through most of the Gears of War campaigns on Xbox, the idea of an XCOM-style turn-based tactics game set in the universe was enough to raise an eyebrow and then mutter, “Yeah, that could work”. And with studios The Coalition and Splash Damage building just that over the past four years, the result is something of a surprise. In the best possible way, with Gears Tactics proving just how solid and versatile the franchise can be.
And how perfect Gears mechanics work in the context of turn-based combat.
The transition away from third-person real-time shooting by studios The Coalition and Splash Damage is as seamless as it is impressive. At once retaining the look and feel and spirit of classic Gears of War action, whilst also making the case for expanding the Gears-verse into other gameplay realms.
