Some really cool games coming out soon so I needs me some upgrades to enjoy them to the fullest. I was going to go display+platform upgrade for CP77 but there seriously isn't that much out there hardware-wise exciting me (except for Ryzen 3) so that's on hold until the next-gen GPUs come out.
However the monitor I've been wanting forever has just come out so I grabbed a Predator X35. Very excited to get that up and running. Only downside - it's a VA not IPS panel so motion blur at high refresh rates could be an issue. Next year the Zen 2 revision should be out and maybe something more desirable GPU wise. |
I am also considering an upgrade. I'm still rocking a Dell XPS PC I bought at the end of 2013 and it is actually still going super strong for the things I use it for - work (mostly spreadsheets, emails and some command line scripting tests), games (95% Dota 2, 5% GTAV single player), and time wasting (webstuff, researching, testing, hacking, Netflix etc)
I am on an i7-4770 @ 3.40Ghz, 16GB, and a GTX 660. The latter I think is probably the biggest thing holding me back? I am happy buying something that is a mid-range-ish PC which I assume will still exceed this one by quite a bit. I am woefully out of date on components, CPUs, etc - I was actually just looking at the latest generation Dell XPS series desktop as this one has been awesome & I reckon 6 years on it'd still be good |
nice Fpot i bought the dell alienware aw3418dw monitor last year which is 120hz IPS and it was the best thing i bought in years!
|
I am excited. Vendor said in stock but the official release is 01/08. Still waiting to see if they're gonna ship or wait. There was no indication of a wait period when ordering so I'll see.
Yeah trog that GPU is ancient and there are plenty of great mid range options that'll really suit you. AMD have some new GPUs out which may be worth looking at for a mid range build. The new AMD CPUs are great as well. edit: it shipped :D |
Holy s*** thats an expensive monitor fpot! Definitely worthy of a complete system upgrade to go along with it.
No upgrades for me any time soon as I only did a system + monitor upgrade early last year. Bought an Acer X34P when it released and payed the early adopter premium to do so. But doesn't seem so expensive now though lol. These monitors now go for less then $950 during ebay sales and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one especially at that price! Same panel as the aw3418dw too. trog if your after a mid range upgrade keep an eye out on Techfast ebay sales they haves some crazy great value systems that are very popular. |
might be an upgrade to the 2080Ti in it for me this year
if not, i can do without the shiny textures for another year |
X35 arrived and despite some rather odd quirks it's awesome. Extra pixels are draining uh frames but I'll still hold out until Nvidia's next release. Might need to turn the graphics settings down a bit on some games.

What is the minimum Geforce I want to be looking at these days? I don't want top of the line but I'd like it to be reasonable. I guess anything is gonna be better than a GTX 660. The Dell XPS series have the following cards at the moment: GTX 1050Ti 4GB GDDR5 GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 GTX® 1660Ti 6GB GDDR6 RTX™ 2060 6GB GDDR6 GTX 1050Ti 4GB GDDR5 GTX® 1660Ti 6GB GDDR6 RTX is the top s*** real time ray tracing thing, right? I don't really care about that. Is 4GB memory enough or do I want to be going for 6-8? thanks for any advice |
What resolution is your monitor and does it run above 60hz? If it does, is it important to you that games run at above 60fps?
|
2560x1440 - it's 59/60Hz (I can't remember why it defaults to 59, I looked it up when I got it and have since forgotten). I bought this monitor (BenQ SW2700PT) mostly for photo editing & work and gaming was a secondary concern; it was basically a placeholder til I got a new PC - I figured I'd get a 4K monitor next upgrade.
|
1440p is a rather demanding resolution, you should be going 2060 minimum. wouldn't recommend going 4k as even the best gpu's available today struggle with it. instead I would be looking at a 1440p monitor with a higher refresh rate (144hz etc).

If you plan on upgrading to 4k then go with either 1070 or 2060. You'll atleast be able to lower some settings down and still get playable frame rates at 4k.
