Honestly not sure how I feel about this. I f*****g love Obsidian. They are by far my favourite game developers ever. Fallout:New Vegas (my fav), Alpha Protocol (great branching story, hilariously awful gameplay), PoE1/2 (PoE2 I've clocked 382 hours since its release on May 8th), South Park Stick of Truth, Tyranny. All great games that are worth more than one playthrough. For mine that's what they're the masters of. Creating compelling storylines with great textured characters that make you want to play through again and see what you can do differently.

I tend to be optimistic when I hear news like this. I was happy back when I heard Oculus had partnered with Facebook. Lots of money will surely create an unbeatable product right especially when R&D is such a large factor. Didn't really turn out that way, but I can't help but have the same thoughts on this acquisition. And even if the worst does happen, it is not unheard of for the talent to splinter off and form their own studio fat from the profits they've just made on their lucrative deal.

Best case scenario is that Microsoft miraculously allow them to keep their independence yet infuse them with cash to make good games. Here's hoping.

If I don't get PoE3 I'll be f*****g pissed. Apparently the rights are held by Black Rock Studio (some guy on an internet forum said, but after a rudimentary search just then nothing really came up indicating that was true). If it is true the hypothetical splinter group of Obsidian talent could still make a new game.

Please let there be a PoE3 :(

If I had to pick a favourite thing among so many really good things it would be how every character is killable* and the story will still progress (sometimes to a quick death). Ballsy design I reckon and hard to pull off without giant narrative flaws.

*except Yes Man, and only on hardscore mode which I don't play on I hate having my companions die.

Have you played Witcher 3? I assume you have, but if you haven't, it's the only thing that surpasses FO:NV and I don't say that lightly. Lot less freedom, much more static world but just so much depth in the story and main characters. Also still plenty of plot deciding freedom and done really well to boot. Spoiler:
Acquiescing re: to Keira visiting Radovid after a few rather intimate cut scenes and then seeing her impaled on a spike later really shocked me... just brutal
.

Horizon: Zero Dawn produced by some W3 guys and written by the lead writer of FO:NV. Now there's a game I want to play. Too bad it's an exclusive.

I played w3 to about 3/4ish way through and loved it but just never finished it, I have a horrible attention span with games. Really should go back and finish it. Hope the show doesn't botch the epic source material.

I've heard the dlcs are awesome too?

yes, they are. Blood & Wine and Heart of Stone were really good. I played witcher 3 through main story, heart of stone and then to the middle of blood & wine, but had to sell my ps4 etc as I was leaving canada. now i want to buy it for Xbox so i can go through it again, but I won't for a while as I am spending enough time on assassin's creed odyssey before RDR2 comes out. Maybe between RDR2 and Cyberpunk 2077 (which I can't bloody wait for)

I want to see Obsidian do another Fallout game. FO76 is interesting but I am not sure I want to keep my pre-order for it.

Picture sort of related.

Have you played Witcher 3?
Everyone raves about this; do I need to have played the first two to get a handle on it? I might give it a go as I have a bunch of spare time atm.

I played Witcher up to the swamp bit which is where everyone gives up, never played Witcher 2 past the tutorial. Witcher 3 played fine. Youtube recaps etc can fill in some gaps that appear but the game does a good job of offering dialogue options that pretty much do the trick.

Short answer: no.

Long answer: not really, the game is independent, but it helps a bit to understand some s*** about the world. Maybe watch one of those Youtube cutscene cinematic movie deals first.

My first exposure to witcher was w3 and other than some backstory that is able to be reasonably inferred I don't think I missed much but a witcher lore buff might disagree.

Not needed but I reckon W2 is a steal for acouple bucks and well worth it. Once you get past the tutorial it is a great game and is still one of the best looking games to date. I played through it twice prior to W3 coming out as there is two very different story paths you can take. Again its not necessary as W3 is its own story but will introduce some of the characters you see in W3.

I'm playing Witcher 3. It's pretty good. I skip the dialogue though so I don't care for the story, to speed things up. You get a mount from the start and it's open. You can point in any direction and just ride/run/swim till you find a quest or something to wack. The maps are not mazes like some RPG's. It's very open and big. I try to avoid following the main story and do side quests, treasure hunts and contracts etc. I try to do them all, exploring whole maps but eventually you level up higher than many, there are so many. So you can pick what you like to level up. I've followed the story before when I first got it, but got bored. Right now I don't have a good game to play, so I decided I'm going to knock this Witcher 3 thing over.

Fallout 4 was rife with the same awful writing and dialogue that made Fallout 3 just an average at best game.

I'd be very worried if it was EA buying them. I'll have a wait & see approach when it comes to Microsoft. Do they have much history of f*****g up otherwise great game studios?

of the 10 studios they bought before e3 2018, five of them are now closed.

I dunno if Digital Anvil or Lionhead can really be blamed on Microsoft though, those imploded from within. Microsoft are the only reason we ever even got Freelancer out of Digital Anvil cos they put the screws to Chris Roberts to bring it out, it would have been lost in the same development hell Star Citizen currently is otherwise.

And if you have some time to kill and want to read a really interesting (albeit long) article, this is the story of Lionhead https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-05-12-lionhead-the-inside-story
