PewDiePie Apologises for His Use of a Racial Slur

It was only a matter of time until YouTuber PewDiePie released an apology video for his use of a racial slur during a recent live-stream of PUBG. An event that triggered a response from Firewatch developer Campo Santo, which filed a DMCA take-down of PewDiePie's Firewatch content.

A move that triggered a somewhat unprecedented move on Steam, where a sizable chunk of the community has since proceeded to give the game negative reviews in a clear attempt to affect its rating. You can see the fruits of that campaign over at the Firewatch Steam page.

The apology video, which of course already has millions of views, is in response to broadcasting "What a f***ing n*****! Geez! Oh my god! What the f***?".

"It was something I said in the heat of the moment. I said the worst word I could possibly think of. And it just sort of slipped out. I'm not going to make any excuses as to why it did because there are no excuses for it.

I'm disappointed in myself because it seems like I've learned nothing from all these past controversies. And it's not that I think I can say or do whatever I want and get away with it. That's not it at all. I'm just an idiot."

This isn't the first PewDiePie apology video, who has over 57 million subscribers to his channel, and time will tell if it's his last.

The only appropriate response is self-immolation and confiscation of all his assets by the state.

That seems a bit extreme. Advertisers pulling their placements from his videos and parents stopping their kids from watching his videos seems like an more appropriate response.

Pretty much that's open chat in the lobby in almost every game I join of PUBG.

PUBG does tend to elicit some of the worst behavior i've ever heard between players in voice range of each other

i think it's just that kind of game, there's no objective other than to survive the longest and bring your team along with you if you can, if that's your play style

it's...harsh

Your behaviour under stress generally reflects your true character, so I'm not sure how 'mistakenly used the n word in the heat of the moment' explains his position. Why is that word in his vocabulary to begin with? Seems pretty flimsy to me.

I think it's also the anonymous nature of PUBG's voice chat. If someone that isn't in my team is talking, I have no way of telling who it is, no indication of which avatar is talking, and certainly no idea what their username is.

You can see some of that stuff if they're talking after they kill you, but I find spawn island / the plane to be the real nasty voice chat areas.

Reaction was OTT but he has Disney as an advertiser now? Not the best look.

You just don't accidentally drop the N bomb if you don't normally use it.

Does anyone else think rap culture taking the word back and re-appropriating to mean something other than its racist roots has back fired?

Of all the racial slang I think it has to be the most prevalent and I think it is mostly because it has been normalized by rap culture rather than being reserved for purely racist intents. Like if someone uses the term G*** then you know they are a racist and not just someone influenced by some kind of pop culture but n***** or "n****" could just be used by someone who hears it everyday in the music they listen to without having any racial intent behind it.

Like I hardly ever hear any of the old racial terms anymore, to the extent that the closest thing I hear is when people simply say something like "the Asians" because people know that using those terms there is no defense for it and you can't pretend you aren't a racist after saying something like g***, c**** or abo in context.

Even in Australia where we don't even have a use for that word I feel like there are a lot of young white kids influenced by rap culture that feel like it's ok to use it amongst their friends.

Also anyone remember saying things when you were younger that you didn't even know were racist until you grew up? I remember saying gyp'd and jew'd when I was a kid not knowing that they actually were racial terms until I found out much later in life. Like I even thought jew'd was dew'd so it took a while to connect the dots and I still don't even really know what a gypsy technically is.

You are probably right, Deadlyf. It has backfired. If no one paid any attention to the word and never really used it, we probably wouldn't be talking about it now.

If he was just using it in the typical "I got killed some someone in a video game" way then there is no issue. If he went to a black person and called them a n*****, then you got a problem.

Why is that his go to word when someone kills him in a video game though? Where does your head have to be at for that to be the word that just 'slips out' when you get angry?

You sure about that? The guy lives on YouTube making money from it and has done for years. For saying it once he's been crucified, so I'd hardly say its his go to word. I don't really watch his videos so I wouldn't know.

Actually its roots are that of a colour descriptor, but has since been replaced by 'black'.

"If no one paid any attention to the word and never really used it, we probably wouldn't be talking about it now."
This. Morgan Freeman has it right - race issues only persist today because we keep talking about race.

"For saying it once he's been crucified, so I'd hardly say its his go to word. I don't really watch his videos so I wouldn't know."
He's said it 'numerous times' in the past, though I've only ever seen one clip. This is just the first time since Murdoch started the Adpocalypse.

I was just going by his apology video, he said he was angry and yelled the first thing that came to mind. For most people I'd imagine if you get killed in a game and you're angry you'd yell MOTHER F*****! or C***! or something similar, most people's first word that springs to mind to yell in anger wouldn't be n*****.

Rap culture doesn't exist, it's just a made up term. I don't think rap makes anyone become desensitized to the use of bad words and it certainly isn't glorified by society. The use of the n word by white people in no way signifies that they support using the n word with a hard R. For our society to be a "rap culture," we would have to universally accept rap in all aspects of our society, from our beliefs (religious organisations, law) to our knowledge (medicine) and any aspect of society that falls in between. So to all you white people living in the plush, first-world, Western civilisations crying out "rap culture," try living in Rwanda or any African country dealing with M.C. Solaar, and Positive Black Soul. Go see what real rap culture then maybe you'll finally shut the f@#% up... Cuz believe me, everyone is tired of your bulls*%&

Oh.

Wait.

No.

I meant the other one.

PP do you... Do you even read the links you post?

white supremacists never find fault with white America, which means that everything ailing black people is black people’s fault. For them, nothing—not even the monuments of white supremacy—is the fault of racism. We’re just doing it wrong.

I could explain to Barkley that a black child is more likely to go to an underfunded school, and how America spends $355 more per white student than it does on nonwhite students. I could point out that 84 percent of white people are killed by other white people, but no one ever mentions white-on-white crime. I could reveal to Barkley the disparities in business loans and hiring practices, but none of it would make any difference.

Apparently, we don’t focus enough on education and money, like the smart, genius Caucasians do, so ... umm ... that’s why the statues shouldn’t come down. Barkley answered a question about monuments to white supremacy by going into a rant about black-on-black crime and insinuating that it somehow had something to do with black people being dumb and poor. Because Barkley doesn’t want to hear logic.

I do.

But you can go and flesh out why any of that means *Charles Barkley* is a white supremacist. I love how the article that definitely isn't a racist diatribe at all is filed under "stupid negros"

Punched any nazis recently?

*edit*
Let me flesh that out a bit. Vash is the undisputed leader of saying dumb s*** on Ausgamers, but that title is up for grabs.

Please Please Please, be the first person on ausgamers to unironically call a black man a white supremacist while scolding people for being racist.
