Ahh, Magic: The Gathering. A lot of people's first love when it comes to competitive card games, so much so that the rise of CCGs of late can trace a lot of their core mechanics back to Wizards of the Coast's beloved card experience. Magic: The Gathering Arena, an all-new free-to-play game all about classic Magic, has been announced.

And you can sign-up for the Closed Beta right here. Once you've done that be sure to watch the live-stream where the announcement happened. It starts off with some very '90s footage of classic Magic: The Gathering tournaments, so you know it's worth a look.

"We assembled some of the best game designers in the industry who are working to build a digital platform as flexible and expansive as Magic itself. But to make sure we really get it right, we need input from the Magic community, so fans should sign up for the Closed Beta and share your feedback with us," said Chris C****, president of Wizards of the Coast.

The game is being developed in-house at Wizards of the Coast's new new Digital Games Studio - so bonus points for picking a descriptor as the name. Magic: The Gathering Arena is set to be a digital recreation of all the rules and intricacies of the table-top game, whilst also focusing on fast-paced, easy-to-follow matches perfect for streaming and tournaments.

"We want to create the deepest, richest digital card game on the market, and for it to be as much fun to watch as it is to play," said Jeffrey Steefel, vice president of digital game development.
