hello erryone

as some of you know i have been dealing with cancer for the past few years, specifically hodgkin lymphoma. my second bone barrow stem cell transplant in late 2015 seems to have done the trick so far though.

since late last year i have been back on the bike out riding and i saw the advertising for this charity ride fund raising for cancer research etc. when i was at the hospital a few weeks ago and it was a no brainer that i would participate, it is held in August and there is the option to walk or ride - i will be doing the 50km ride.

i need to raise a minimum of $500 so if any of you can donate anything even $5 it would be much appreciated.

shout out to heardy who has already donated $50 (y)

thanks

Great cause. My wife has beaten the bastard twice. (Breast Cancer) Second time it cam back after 10 years and wow she had to have the full deal. Mastectomy/reconstruction/chemo etc.. amazingly strong woman. Went to work each day whilst having massive chemo, only took Fridays off as they were her worst day. Tough as f*****g nails she is. Cancer does not f*** with her let me tell ya!

My wife (Rosemari) and I are sending another $50 your way dude.

Good luck.

Paveway, my wife is going to nominate your cause to her employer. Newscorp donates $10,000 a month, every month to charities nominated by their staff. No guarantees, but if successful, you could score $2,000 for your cause. I have forwarded the details on to her, she will do the rest. fingers crossed. :)

cheers, Psycho.

F*** that is awesome everyone that has donated. Almost half way there and i haven't donated myself yet or sent it around at work. 👍

From the breif reading i have done breast cancer, it is a MF. It can spread so easily, luckily it sounds like it didn't get to that point for your wife as it is practically a death sentence when i asked my doc about it as someone i went to school with has it and it got to that point.

That would be insane if your wife could swing that with work psycho, tell your wife thank you. I have customised the info on my page with a bit of my story maybe that might help.

I should be up for the 100k ride when this comes around next year. Started back with 10k in november last year lol

Yes it can be an insidious bugger. The first time round it had not left the milk ducts, and even though they took out all her lymphs nodes as a precaution (this was standard practices 12 years ago) test showed that it had not gone to the Lymph glands and THAT is a big plus. Sop she just had a lumpectomy and they left 95% of the breast intact. Shoot forward 10 years and at one of her yearly checks , it was discovered by an astute ultrasound operator at the Wesley. Her mammogram showed nothing, but this operator spotted this tiny little 5mm spot that looked 'bad'

Turned out it was a completley different grade of BC, highoy agressive level 4 or such, in the same breast. Her surgeon, the same guy she had ten years prior said he had never seen such a thing, especially for two different classifications of Cancer in the same tissue. Anyways they took the lot off and she had the chemo and the baldness and all the crap. One thing I learned is that if they give you radiation to the breast they cant do it ever again and its cutting time. Anyway,as I said she as tough as nails. Got through all that and then a year later went to the most amazing surgeon in Brisbane.

He reconstructed her breast using a 'transflap' technique which will blow your mind when you research it. He created a living breast reconstruction that I defy anyone doing a blind 'feeling' :) to be able to tell its not a real breast. The man is the Michelangelo of breast reconstruction. Anyone who has a loved one or a friend going through this s*** and needs the name of a brilliant reconstructive surgeon, hit me up I'll give you his name and such. They tattooed a nipple on that bad boy and other than the scar under the breast you cant tell them apart. F*****g genius.

**And an footnote to all this make you think. AFter all this in the last 4 yrs, her mother has had BC, AND her sister as well. Talk about a genetic cluster. Best part was they all had the Brac testing (That angelina jollie had done) and they all came up clear. Hope your friend see it thru.

If you guys knew what it was like to recover from an allogeneic bone marrow stem cell transplant you realise how well i am doing to be able to do 50km. My doctor thought i was a legend for getting back on the bike 1 year on last november, i start by riding 7kmand was f***ed after it.

Thanks for the donations:

I'm gonna be thatguy.

I've always been a suspicious of companies like CauseForce (the ones organising OneDay event) who exist to essentially make a profit from organising charity events. On one hand without them paveway wouldn't be doing this, I wouldn't have heard of it and nothing would go towards cancer research. On the other hand, they are taking a percentage of the donations. They only exist to leech of peoples good will.

Not exactly sure how I feel about these orgs. Sorry to be a downer.

It is a common concern, enough so that there are organisations that attempt to rate not-for-profits to help you understand how wisely they spend their money. Givewell for example is excellent although is more focused on the big international charities.

I can't remember the Australian equivalent but I remember seeing a report that summarised the major Australia charities by how much of their revenue was spent on fundraising - turns out some of the big ones spend > 50% of their money on fundraising, is kinda annoying. Choice also has a good summary.

+1 agree, I would find it pretty massively unusual if they associated themselves with a charity without doing a ridiculous amount of due diligence to make sure the money is going where it is supposed to

With regards to marketing companies taking a cut, if you like the charity organisation message but are worried about middle men, log onto the website and make a donation there.

Dude this is well timed.

As I mentioned in one of my earlier post, my wife can nominate a charity to her company (News Corp) for a donation and I said she was going to do this. Well she did, she was advised a week ago that they have accepted her nomination and have elevated it to the next step of the assessment. Can't make any promises yet, but you might be getting an extra couple of grand for the cause if it comes through!

If it gets approved the money gets sent to them anyways and that's the important thing. I think my wife can make sure its attributed to you via News Corp, PM your private details and I'll make sure it happens if they do approve the donation.
