Came across these on reddit (where else, har).

The arrogant aholes from dota/hon (dunno about LoL.. never played it) will have mental breakdowns with the massive influx of n00bs once this is released :D

Hell, i havent played DOTA in about 5 years but i remember doom bringer and shadow fiend. The IU looks clean and crisp and so do the graphics.
|
Very nice looking. Simplistic UI is the best UI. No need to have s*** popping out everywhere etc.

"shop" 603" gold. oh god. Yep seems like a pay-to-win set up there. Unless of course gold is gained in game as it should be, but how likely is that these days? |

Uhh if youve ever played dota you'd know that thats the starter amount of gold you get... as in, game gold. WOW MATES sorry for being so mean, something about this topic just unleashed an inner rage... last edited by slyin at 08:03:00 15/Aug/11 |
Am I the only one who thinks the textures look very... flat and boring? Like it has some type of murky filter over everything? Also what's up with that same god damn map? I've seen tons of HoN videos and every single game its the same damn map.
|
Yeah, the guys on Penny Arcade have discussed that too, I think they came to the conclusion that map is just part of the genre. Like a game of football, where the football field is always the same, but what makes each game interesting is what happens on the field. I dunno, I don't really play enough of these games to have an opinion either way, but I can see their point.

Wow the textures on the map detail look alot like TF2 LOL very cartoony and boring... hon s**** on that...
Looking forward to playing DOTA2 though... as it's being designed by icefrog... who is a balance master... I wonder how long ago these shots were taken? Hopefully it's come a LONG way since then... |

603 is how much gold you start with at the beginning of every game, way to comment on something you have nfi on. Graphics aren't everything, it's still a closed beta you expect the finish product from that gamer? Also since when have graphics been the selling point of any competitive game which is based off skill and team work.
Hey guys why does AFL, soccer, nfl, nhl, basketball omfg maybe every sport alive play on the same field? Because that's the way it's designed, dota is the same.. the map is designed as the field in which you play and how you play is what makes the game. There's a multitude of different strategies that you can use in a match so 1 game is never really the same as the other. Also before you argue "fps / rts" have different maps, this isn't an fps or rts. |
AFL, soccer, nfl, nhl,Um only two of those sports play on the same field. |
Every game which has trialed other maps, other numbers of players, (like HoN and LoL did) generally fall flat. They're underplayed to the point where only someone plays it for something different, and then never plays it again.
LoL said it was going to make new maps, but then recently announced no more.. they didn't even come up with any. One 3lane which everyone knows, and a 2 lane, which HoN players would LoL at. I like the jumping to conclusions by those who don't know the core basic's of this game. 1) Use hero skills 2) Level hero up 3) buy equipment for hero using money earned for killing creeps and other heroes. Pretty funny. |
Um only two of those sports play on the same field. errrr what? They have their own standard fields.. the f***? Soccer field doesn't change AFL field doesn't change NHL field doesn't change NFL field doesn't change NRL field doesn't change You get me? |
What a bad comparison. AFL fields are anywhere from 135m to 230m long.
errrr what? They have their own standard fields.. the f***? No they don't. See above. There is no standard height/width for an AFL oval. last edited by Raven at 14:18:33 15/Aug/11 |
This is what happens when people quote a sport they don't know anything about. They fail.
I would have too, who even can watch AFL? |
Yeah I'm not really buying into the whole physical sport analogy. Videogames have the advantage of being able to easily offer a variety of different play fields that can be selected and switched between with no effort, it's a benefit of the medium.
I personally don't particular enjoy most games that have that degenerated into that kind of refined homogeneity. Look at the new Counter-strike thread at how many people were complaining about how CS;S degenerated into servers only running de_dust. That said, from an e-sport perspective, it's probably a positive. |
LoL said it was going to make new maps, but then recently announced no more.. they didn't even come up with any. One 3lane which everyone knows, and a 2 lane, which HoN players would LoL at.What's the "Dominion" map that I've seen in a few recent trailers? |
It seemed that LoL only got better the more that people learned the map. The familiarity of it was somehow a good thing (everybody knew what it meant to "go for" a particular goal for example), and it became about advancing tactics on the same field, which was fun.

I think I will wait until a video before I render judgement. Still it's a simple graphic style which I like. HON was just cluttered and over the top and it became annoying to figure out WTF was going on half the time.
|
I think what they are trying to say is that basically, every MOBA game based of DOTA, will have the most played map. It's just something that comes with the games. Look at COD, they always have to have a AK. And bullets. And guns. And people to shoot at.
|
What a bad comparison. AFL fields are anywhere from 135m to 230m long. The field is still your standard oval with 4 posts at either end signifying 6 pts and a behind. The map design in dota / lol / hon is slightly different but the basic 3 lanes, 3 rows of towers, rax etc is almost identical. |
Not a fan of the UI tbh. Atleast not with the areas that do nothing but cover the map. (between map and skills kinda area. And the top bar needs less covered. Seriously, make it transparent or something with different background for where you need information.

This spawns from users being used to only 75% of their view being the game.
Honestly, considering how much modification there was of the WoW UI i'd be surprised if DotA2 didn't do a HoN like implementation with floating customizeable UI elements. These afterall are just preview screens, try not to think too deeply about them. Yeah I'm not really buying into the whole physical sport analogy. Videogames have the advantage of being able to easily offer a variety of different play fields that can be selected and switched between with no effort, it's a benefit of the medium. Problem is Dan, the game style is based around the map more than anything. If you change that style, then you lose a lot of the current reason people are playing it. Remember how many s***** CS/Quake/starcraft maps exist? HOw many of them should never ever have got into any rotation ever? Well that's what's been happening behind the scenes. They don't come out because they're so awful. HoN originally in beta (can't remember if it's still there now) had a second 5 player map and it was awful. It wasn't much different from the DotA one but it was different enough to be not as good for the elements the map play in the game. The original DotA map only had revisions. It had basic 3 lanes, and then was revised, over and over, implementing nooks crannies sneakthrough paths and shops. They focused hard on making a single 3 lane map good and if something can't be as fun quickly enough to be worth learning, then it's not going to survive. If it doesn't get picked up, then there's no reason to throw (in a tiny group like DotA/HoN/LoL) people into doing that. It's not cost effective. Instead making new mechanics, new heroes and fixing bugs is a much better use of resources. I mean, if it had a customizeable map like WC3's mapbuilder, then sure, let the community submit and players rate them. But that in itself would nearly be as big a project as LoL/HoN/DotA itself. |
THE MAP IS THE GAME GUYS. ADD IN 500 HEROES FOR YOUR GAMEPLAY CHANGING ELEMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
The Map is not the game. It is just one part of the game. And there should be more game types to IMO. LOL is trying/releasing dominion. I am sure there are plenty of other types you can do. 2v2, 3v3, 5v5, 10v10 even. Different game modes, maps etc. Imagination is the only limitation here really.
|
I'd love to try bigger teams in LoL. Haven't played for such a long time that I'm afraid of all the new heroes though. :/
