E3 2011: Nintendo Wii U Revealed (Formerly Project Cafe)

If you weren't tuned into our live blog of Nintendo's pre-E3 media briefing, you likely missed the unveiling of the Wii U; Nintendo's new console that was formerly known by the name of Project Cafe.

The new system is essentially a tablet interface controller with a touch-screen, full gyroscopic support, a face camera, dual analogue thumbsticks, a D-Pad and the usual face buttons. You'll be able to interact with your TV in unique ways, as well as go online, or keep playing your game while someone uses the TV to watch a movie or the like.

We're still waiting on detailed specs from Nintendo right now, so stay tuned once we know more. Until then, here's a few items of note:
- The console does all the graphics and streams video to the controller screen.
- Although they neglected to mention it in the press-con, there appears to only be an option for one touchscreen controller per console (presumably a limitation of the wireless video tech).
- The console can output 1080p over HDMI to a HDTV, but the controller's screen is only standard definition.
- Although HD, most previews for third party games shown during the press-con didn't look quite as good -- in terms of graphical fidelity -- as trailers we've seen for those same games on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Indicating that the either they're not representative of the final product, the it's potentential has yet to be properly realised or that the system possibly less powerful than it's much older competitor consoles.
- The position of the sticks and buttons on the touchscreen controller look like they'd be quite awkward to use for serious gaming (so we'll be sure to offer impressions on that once we go hands on).

Specs:
...the console itself will run in full HD, via HDMI, but the touchscreen isn't HD. The console has internal Flash memory which can be augmented with "SD Card or USB solutions". It will play optical disks and downloadable content, and will be backwards-compatible with Wii software. And it will launch some time between 1 April and 31 December 2012.

If you can't see the potential for some truly awesome game experiences using this, then you're blinded by some kind of fanboy hate or platform hate.

Think games where some people are playing one type of game split screen on the television, like driving vehicles or an fps or whatever, while another person is playing an entirely different role on their controller, maybe as a commander co-ordinating everyone else in the game as an RTS style of thing.

Or a game like LA Noire where the controller is like your crime scene analysis type tool, and you hold it up to the screen and scan the crime scene with it, magnifying different areas, etc.

Or even just simple things like when you're playing multiplayer games and players can be given secret objectives on their separate controllers that the other players don't know about.

You could have a game like BF3 or Modern Warfare, where you launch unmanned spy drones, and the camera feed from your spy drone is on your controller, while you're still able to play the game and run around as your character, while viewing the feed from your spy plane.

Hell, even a game like Mass Effect could benefit from it cos they could take the UI completely off the screen. You could have your powers and abilitiy wheel and all that up permanently on the controller and just tap abilities to use them, keep the conversation options and such on the controller and off the screen, etc.

Khel: Most 2 player things you mentioned can be done with 3D and Sony's new technology to display completely different screens for 2 different people, a much much better solution than the Wii U by far. And your FPS examples of BF3/MW, have you tried playing COD while running around while also looking at the mini map (which is only on the top right of the screen)? Most of the time when I do that I end up dying. Now imagine the same thing but now you have to look DOWN away from your screen? Ridiculously bad idea. Any fast past gaming would suffer from having to look away from the screen imo.

I for one (at this point in time) cannot see one benefit for this new controller, seems like another Nintendo gimmick that suckers will purchase however I will definitely get the new console as I can then get new games!

Except you need a special TV and active shutter glasses, so unless Sony are going to bundle a new TV with their console at no extra cost (and assuming you want to replace your kick arse 50" TV with a gimpy little 24" monitor), that's not a better solution at all.

I'm definitely keen to see more on this. I agree with Khel, this doesn't look like a gimmick at all. There are so many applications for a personal touchscreen.

Actually, what this does is allow you to play your wii with other people, without having them screencheat you.

It also allows you to play different roles without being confused by different angles.

It also allows you to have gimmicks, and FFS before you say "gimmicky" lets looks at gimmicks:

Time travel. Gimmick, worked pretty good for braid
Portals. Gimmick, worked pretty neatly for the 2 games named after them.
Wii. Only a gimmick, managed to outsell every other console and raise revenues higher than any other console.

The thing is, they can not use the tablet at all and the actual games are going to be good enough to play as if they're exactly the PS3 xbox equivilents. Then if a game comes along where you can use this, and is also gimmicky (read, innovative) then great.

That's something that's NEW in the generation, and separates a console from a computer. These are good things.

I think someone in the actual stream summed it up "I can play it in my bed while my missus falls asleep". First good use of a tablet ever. And it's not a s***** ipad with onscreen annoying controls, it's like a giant PSP except with the graphics of a PS3, which makes it better than the PSP2.

But whatever, haters will hate, but they don't let facts prove them wrong. bet he hates the wii, but the market says he's wrong. Statistically he's wrong. Also this isn't a debate of "what's better". This is a debate of "what's new". guess what i can already do with my PC that you saw sony demo. Hurrr.

The controllers do look akward but definitely has a lot of potential. It seems like they've taken a similar concept they used on the gamecube and given it an overhaul. Don't know if many people remember but you could use an uplink cable on the gameboy advanced plugged into the gambecube as a secondary screen to assist you in certain games. The only game I remember using it on was Wind Waker and it's main purpose was to help you find hidden areas (from memory). It was good idea but I didn't find myself using it all that often because it would chew through GBA battery life.

Guys there are some things to clear up about this. The analog inputs are sliders, not sticks. Only one wii u controller works per system from what they have said so far. The screen is single touch resistive and comes with a stylus, headphone jack on it too.

Not too hot on the controller as I expect it to weigh the same as an Ipad but god damn that thing looks cool. S*** name but I like the idea of having an inventory screen on the actual controller so you no longer need a button for it in link for example. This could give them some room to do some pretty cool things.

Apparently its quite light, I'd imagine it being a fair bit lighter than an Ipad since it doesn't really have any processors or storage or anything like that inside it, its just a touchscreen and buttons. I'd love to actually get my hands on it and see how it feels myself though, cos I'm not sure how awkward it would be to use, but then I guess its not going to be anymore awkward than using a PSP or a 3ds. From some of the stuff I've read from people who've used it, its actually quite comfortable and easy to use due to the analogue controls being up near the top. I dunno why that makes it more comfortable and easy to use, but it does, somehow.

It's a resistive touch screen with no multitouch support, from what I can see. My guess is that it'll be for it's own gimmick. You would use it in certain games to control the scheme (dungeon master style) while the other people play the game. In singleplayer use it would be used for drawing and such. Doubt there's an advantage to use it like a normal controller.

Sounds interesting and should produce some pretty unique gaming scenarios if properly implemented.

Imagine a dungeon crawler where the players had wiimotes and the gamepad guy had a top-down view, and was reacting to your progress, basically playing as the monster's side?

I'm assuming the other controllers are Wiimotes?

Well, besides the obvious that it can be used as a controller with touch screen capabilities, cause you know, being able to have certain features ala map or game data without having to pause is very cool.

Also, a 8 minute hands on with kotaku. S*** looks epic http://kotaku.com/5809693/8-minutes-of-our-hands+on-video-shows-what-its-like-to-play-wii-u and the streaming from controller to console and reverse is phenomenal.

From http://www.computerandvideogames.com/306087/news/wii-u-console-and-controller-wont-be-sold-separately/

The rep also told us that multiplayer games being created for the system are only being designed to accomodate one tablet-style controller, whilst other players will need to use a Wiimote. It is currently unknown whether it is possible to sync more than one of the new controllers to a single Wii U.

And also http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/07/ibm-puts-watsons-brains-in-nintendo-wii-u/

IBM tells us that within the Wii U there's a 45nm custom chip with "a lot" of embedded DRAM (shown above). It's a silicon on insulator design and packs the same processor technology found in Watson, the supercomputer that bested a couple of meatbags on Jeopardy awhile back.

hog, have a read of one of the articles linked to earlier (guardian maybe?), it pretty much states that that is one of the ideas behind the new controller, it uses the example of a Mii mini game in which 4 players with Wiimotes gang up to capture the person with the new WiiU remote, who has a different screen and has different objectives/GUI etc. and that is just like a 'wii sports' implementation of it.

Anyone serious has a xbox or ps3

Seriously just about everyone I’ve ever spoken to about the wii they own say that it’s been packed away for ages now, I’ve seriously pre-empted people in a conversation by saying they don’t play it anymore and it’s packed away

Same as the wii my missus bought, only decent game I played on it was star wars

Well I think thats what they are trying to change Python. Especially with all these "hardcore" games coming onto the platform now, it will definitely revitalise the console wars. Sure they are current gen titles, but we'll have to wait to see what next gen games it can support. To be realistic, you wouldn't see next gen games yet because there is no console "yet" that can support next gen graphics.

My wii played zelda. After 2 weeks of that it collected dust until Monster Hunter Freedom came out. 150 odd hours later it started collecting dust again. Soft modded and racked up about 100 hours in Rune Factory Frontier and it's still collecting dust now. Was more a kiddy/family console, and it did well for them that way. Now it's time for them to make a real gamer console. Long as the tablet controller doesn't weight the same as a bear cub I think it may actually suit me because I have big hands and always feel like i'm about to crush controllers.

Pave, it's set in stone that you can definitely use one controller with the console, obviously, which is bundled with the console. But they are looking at two controllers per console. But it makes sense, cause I'd use the controller for my own personal use and playing online, but local multiplayer, I always pull out old controllers, even on the Wii.

Really? I thought $600 50" TV's solved that problem.

Not sure about the idea of a resistive screen, having to get out a stylus would suck and it sounds like it will be more like a handheld Wii in terms of display. The other problem I have with this is that developers won't take advantage of the screen because of cross platform support and that it'd cost too much to develop interesting controls specifically for the one console. The only games that will really take advantage are going to be Ninty exclusives which means that there isn't a good reason to pick it over any of the existing consoles unless you really need to play the latest rehash of Zelda or Wii Sports. I mean if Gearbox won't take the time to develop a control scheme for Duke to carry more than 2 weapons for 30% of it's market than I doubt anyone making a cross platform game will go to even more trouble to take advantage of the Wii U screen.

The other thing is, I don't think it'd take much from Sony to make the new Vita thing incorporated with the PS3 either and if they did that then they would have a clear superiority in terms of handheld controller.

If the WiiU can deliver games that look as good, or better, than 360 and Ps3, with the online features of those platforms, plus cool little gameplay extras through the unique controller, why wouldn't you get the WiiU version?

That was really weird...I was sure I had divided by zero then. Anyways, what Nintendo is doing, is catching up with all the other platforms by getting current gen games so people can have something to play, and then getting developers to make next gen games, just for them. This way they are guaranteed developers, because they will be the only ones to develop next gen titles for. They will have all the next gen exclusives because frankly, I don't see Sony or Microsoft hinting at a new console until 2014/2015. They aren't done with current gen, and especially with their waggle waggle and move my arms around things.

This is very smart of Nintendo. They are guaranteed sales because they are the first to offer the newest and greatest technology. They have the wickedest tablet I've ever seen, and if they can pull through with it all, then by gosh they make just be kings. Sony and Microsoft will have to top it with their own versions, or something completely new. But for now, it's in the hands of Nintendo.

Well they already made a pretty good headstart on that, during the press conference when they announced it they had pretty much every big third party developer there is pledging support for it, and a decent list of huge titles already announced to be coming to it. Not a lot of first party titles announced, but from the demos its probably pretty safe to say theres a zelda game in the works for it, and they said theres a Smash Brothers coming for it.

But I agree with you about the online stuff, Nintendo so far has sucked the dong when it comes to a good online experience. They need to take a good look at the best parts of what Microsoft has done, and what Sony has done, and come up with their own spin on that. For me, XBox Live has set the bar for online experiences, the way the friends list works, voice chatting, forming parties, inviting people into games, all that is just so seamless and easy to do on 360. Nintendo will need to be meeting or exceeding that imo.

Also Darksider II is being apparently released with the WiiU's release. Darksiders II is still going to be multi-platform however.

Like IBM, who today issued a press release boasting some of the Wii U's hardware specifications, including the fact the microprocessor serving as "the heart" of the console is a custom 45nm chip, with embedded DRAM that "is capable of feeding the multi-core processor large chunks of data to make for a smooth entertainment experience".

So, 45nm chip, embedded DRAM, multi-core processor. It's not everything, but it's a start. The chips will be made at an IBM facility in New York.

They confirmed a new Super Smash Brothers for 3DS and WiiU and a new Mario Kart for 3DS and WiiU at the conference
Nintendo confirming updates to long running franchises is like confirming the sun is going to rise, it'd only be news if it wasn't going to happen. It'd also likely spark the same amount of global panic and subsequent looting and rioting.

Developers get the s**** with the Wii though because so much work has to go into cutting down all of the assets to make the games work on it, so hardly anyone bothers. That's obviously not a likely problem any more. If anything, the Wii U will get the prettiest versions of most game releases (unless there's some other factor we're not yet aware of to prevent this).

Factor in how f*****g annoying motion controller programming is. I had to use it for a project at Tafe, and holy s*** was it buggy as f***.

But how long will that last for when MS and Sony release their console which will be better speced than the U?

edit: I'm excited for the next zelda:

too bad I'm going to have to buy a whole new console just to play it.

We shall see Greazy. I don't really expect anything next E3 with Sony and Microsoft, as they aren't done with the Move and Kinect. So we shall. Until then, have some more info!

Yeap, and a rumoured 25GB capacity. Sure it's not BlueRay, but I think this choice is more efficient for them. I'm positive everyone behind Nintendo working on it have done their homework.

I think that's the reason they didn't go Blu Ray Hog, the pricing is probably not sufficient enough. I'm thinking they'd want to aim for a $500-$700 unit price.

lul silly nintendo

This morning, Nintendo showed off a highlight reel of third-party games supposedly running on its new Wii U console. They looked great. Turns out that footage wasn’t running on anything of the sort.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has told GameTrailers that the footage – of games like Ghost Recon and Darksiders II – was instead culled from the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the games.

Fitzy"does it have better graphics?" techspert "it has awesome graphics"

Thats not news, they never claimed those games were running on the WiiU, its just a list of games that will be coming to it. Reggie did an interview on the Gametrailers stream right after the press conference and openly admitted they weren't running on the WiiU yet cos third party developers had only just got their hands on it and hadn't had time to do anything with it yet.

But you know, don't let the truth get in the way of some good old fashioned news.com style journalism.

Not good news for the Wii U.

Nintendo’s newly announced “Wii U” console is already the subject of controversy – the company has admitted using footage from the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of games in its promotional material, and when confronted over the swindle they lamely point to their discrete “all gameplay images are intended only as illustrations” disclaimer.

Nintendo claims it had no choice as the system and games are still in development, and asserts the actual Wii U versions will be “comparable,” which could well be a roundabout way of saying “worse.”

Yeah go nintendo.

Anyone who actually believes what gaming companies show on the floor (unless it's a controllable demo like the one above) is a fool. Did everyone forget about red steel screens at E3?

I'm constantly raging against "screenshots" when 99% of the time they're god damned rendered-not-in-game-shots. Everything is a lie unless you see it with your own eyes.

Well fake graphics or not, After reading about some of the stuff the controller will be used for on the new aliens game i'm excited to get my hands one this.

The most important thing Randy Pitchford told us during our discussion about the Wii U version of the game with him today, is that the high-definition first-person shooter will be completely playable on the Wii U controller with the television off. That means you can play through the entire shooter on the tablet's screen while someone is watching television.

There are also a lot of very neat things players will be doing with that screen-touting controller as well in the game, Pitchford says. The device will, at times, become the game's motion tracker, a device in the fiction of the Alien universe that can track the location of enemies and friendlies by their motion. Pitchford explained that players may be asked to sweep their controller around them, looking for approaching enemies, which will show up as blips on the display of the controller.

The Wii U controller will also become a fully interactive map at times. In this mode, players will be able to play with a full map of the area much like we see Private William Hudson doing in the movie Aliens.

Finally, Pitchford said that players will use the display on the controller to play a mini-game used to hack doors in the game.

That sounds so bad ass. As if hearing that tracker noise wasn't anus loosening enough, now you'll be holding it and can swivel around with it while it goes off.

I was sold before, and now I'm doubly sold. This is what developers need to do. To make it so that it's even more convenient and to get rid of the need to go into other windows, interrupting gameplay.

Yeah didn't notice that, my bad!

More information released about WiiU spec.

Processor manufacturer AMD has confirmed it will be providing the graphics chip for Nintendo's newly-announced Wii U.

A custom Radeon HD GPU promises "high-definition graphics support; rich multimedia acceleration and playback; and multiple display support".

Said David Wang, AMD's corporate vice president of Silicon Engineering, "AMD shares Nintendo's excitement for the new HD entertainment experience planned for the Wii U console." Nintendo has claimed the U's graphical performance will be comparable to that of current Microsoft and Sony hardware.

Which will be a good 4 or 5 years from now. By then they'll probably only be a year or two away from releasing their next system anyway. I think Nintendo generally has a 5 year cycle on their systems. Microsoft and Sony have both stated they want to get a decade out of their current systems.

Microsoft have stated the Kinect is what they are focusing on now for a good 3-4 years, and Sony has stated the Move is the same. Also Sony stated the PS3 would be around for 10 years. The PS3 was announced in the PS2's 6th year, and then released 2006. So it still has quite a few years in it, especially when both platforms are only now getting a crap load of current gen titles.
