Last night (well 3AM AEST today) was the Apple keynote at the WWDC 2009 and they've announced some pretty cool upgrades for the iPhone. Looks like the Palm Pre is probably going to be second best after all (IMO). From TUAW:
It's no big surprise, and John Gruber even got the name right.

Apple announced the new iPhone 3G S today, featuring faster processor speed, built-in video capture and editing, voice dialing and voice command, built-in compass, and of course it will be running iPhone 3.0. There's a much better camera in the iPhone 3G S as well. Here are the details:

Autofocus
Tap to focus

Video playback: Up to 10 hours
Audio playback: Up to 30 hours
More pricing information and details will be posted shortly here on TUAW.
The phone itself looks pretty much the same as you can see. I can't say Telstra would have any upgrade deal, but who knows...

I can probably say that anyone who was on the fence about getting one probably won't have much trouble in making a decision now.. promoted forum item

Engadget has a comparison between the 3G and 3G S, but the main differences are:

- New 32GB model available
- Faster CPU
- 3.0 megapixel camera, with video recording capability
- maximum 7.2Mbps HSDPA (up from 3.6)

I must say as a 3G owner, I'm not upset or feel like I should upgrade. I think it seems like a minor revision, and I guess Apple does too given the model name.

I won't be upgrading as it wouldn't be cheap for me, but I sure would like the upgrades, especially the fast CPU and video recording.

I'm downloading the GM build (I think this is RC in Apple speak) of the beta firmware to see what else there is for existing 3G users.

I wonder if the voice command is available for all iPhones (it should be).

EDIT: Yeah its not :'(

To be honest, the camera on 2/3G are pretty shocking for video (as seen in Cycorder jailbreak app).

This is quite a good upgrade, but I'm wondering if Telstra (if any of them) will have any sorta upgrade deal, which I highly doubt.

I am going to get an iphone when I come home, do you honestly need the 32gb??

In terms of the ipod functionality, how's the sound quality? I assume it's the same as a stand alone ipod?

I wonder if vodafone will have the new model as soon as it's released.

The news.com.au article (link) says they've sold over 1 billion apps through the app store and over 40 million iphones globally, they sure have sold an assload!

Damo, the 2mp camera is bloody good in well lit conditions. 3mp is morethan anyone needs on phone.

Heardy, sound quality is amazing compared to older model iPods. Everytime I listen to music on mates' phones I want to throw up it's so bad.

Warning to anyone thinking about buying a new iPhone: you will have to use iTunes. Get over it BEFORE you purchase.

It's OK in good light, but not great.

It seems that this 3.0MP camera will at least be better quality, disregarding resolution, as the 30fps video recording requires a decent camera. The current 2MP camera SUCKS for video.

Yeah, I'm talking about the sensor speed. It blurs like a mofo and its prolly not even capable of decent looking 5fps video, so I can't imagine it this camera being any good for video (which it isn't).

Sounds good but I'll wait until a phone contract comes up early next year - there's nothing in the S that I want so badly that I'd pay extra above the contract for.

I'm much more interested in turn-by-turn Navigation from the likes of Tom Tom or Garmin - and that should work for anyone with a 3.0 if it gets through the App Store. If Apple continues to c***block on this I'm gonna just JB and install xGPS.

I have a 16gig 3G phone. I've had the hard drive pretty full but only because I had loaded about a dozen full length movies for the kids to watch in the car.

I'd prob go for the 32 gig next time round, just cause its there.

^Ditto RE storage. I have about 8 gig worth of music, then a few gig of movies and bam it's full. With 32gig I could have pretty much all the music I listen to, plus at least a half-dozen of movies, which would mean that I'd only ever have to use iTunes to change s*** around once a week. At the moment I swap media over every couple of days at the most.

I use this analogy to explain the megapixel vs sensor: Imagine you are displaying a picture on a wall using a projector. You can make that picture bigger by simply moving the projector back, but that does not increase the quality of the picture. On the other hand, you could get a better projector, and when you use it from a greater distance you can see more detail.

I have the 16gb and it does me fine. I hold 1-2 tv series on it and have about 5gb of music. It's never been more than 80% full. Got a few webcasts as well. 32 gb may be needed if u want to keep s*** on there u never ever use and take A LOT of video at 30fps

Apps and other data are insignificant

a 350mb tv show is about 240mb when converted for iPhone

Depends if you like using a phone like a iPod shuffle I guess. I only have an 8gig iPhone so I keep my 80gig iPod around just so I can carry a fair bit of music around with me. If you're cool with updating the playlist on the iPhone fairly often and don't mind the "mannnn I really wanna hear that song but can't" then get the 16 instead of the 32.

There's no Australian pricing yet, but yes - in America iPhone 3G was launched last year on 24month contract at $199/$299 for 8GB/16GB , so they've kept the same price points for 3GS and doubled the SSD size.

Feature wise yes it's got everything including the kitchen sink and more but...I hate to say it but Nokia's Symbian platform is just stale, it's got UI and usability from the early 2000.....

I've seen video reviews of N97 was so frustrated as hell just to watch the sales chick demoing the unit... It just look so clunky to use... Seriously, even Win mo IMO, has better usability than Symbian.... and it's many light years behind iPhone OS.

I just want Visual Voicemail in Australia without having to swap over to Vodafone (because they're s***e)

I will be upgrading, simply because I bought mine outright and I'm sick to death of pre-paid
It's time to go back on a plan, but only 12 months - none of this 24 month crap

I recharged with optus two weeks ago ($40) and within 72 hours it was 100% gone
I rang up to find out why, turns out if I don't put at least $50 per month on my phone I only get 10mb of data usage and they charge me $1.20 per SIXTY KILOBYTES OR PART THERE OF?!@!@!@ WTF

needless to say, I was pissed because it was a legacy plan and they said "just by saying you want to swap to <PlanX> you will get the same amount of calls + 100mb/month or what evs

I also just spent the long weekend on moreton and had no reception from the port of brisbane when I left until I got back into the port of brisbane
wouldn't bother me normally except I had to ring the old man on Sunday to say Happy b'day - mate with Telstra had full speed 3g internets

check this for a rort. i lost my n96 which was on contract so switched my blackberry over to optus onto their $79 plan. within 2 weeks i had racked up about $180 in data charges (30mb), simply because i didn't denote one of their data plans. with telstra you can use third party aps unlimited however not so with optus and i got caught out.

i had to fight my way through to someone who put me on a $10/month data plan for 200mb, and got a credit for all the excess charges

I'm with Telstra and I get frustrated without Next G.... I used to be able to get a solid call and intratubes access from just about everywhere on my Next G handset but, now it's touch and go in some places (even at my place) with their normal 3G network. Still I get more coverage than my friends who are with 3/Vodafone/Optus... The next handset will have to have the Next G network compatibility...

I miss copy and paste all the time. Depends what you use the phone for I guess? If you do like I'm doing right now and post on forums with the phone the lack of clipboard us obvious and jarring.

There's a ton of stupid little things that irk me about the iPhone's setup, as though they didn't think very hard about usability beyond the very nice touch interface. It's a very nice piece of kit, but I think I'll be more carefully looking to see what the win mo guys are doing next time before jumping onto the iPhone wagon. There is a LOT of do-it-our-way you have to swallow.

Yes, the excess data cottage industry. Thankfully I think we can make enough noise nowadays (Intertubes) to push back on that!

Another one to watch out for are those automated SMS services; they can individually be steep and rack up over time and since it's a 3rd party service (but with most of the $$ eventually going back to the carrier) the phone monkeys generally can't do anything about it.

Worked fine! I used one from TPB.

Just sent and received a test MMS, the pic in the message bubble is kind of funky. Landscape email is much, much nicer. The apps I've tried are all working OK. I think I like the way they do text selection for copy and paste.

Trying to get an early 8.2 iTunes now so I can make tethering work. The latest one from Apple won't let you install ipcc files!

Edit: woo got an 8.2.0.10 iTunes and now tethering is working, bluetooth and USB.

I missed copy/paste before it was included. I've used it several times on the beta it works very well.

Looking forward to the full release but i got s*** on at the moment so will wait for it officially (though apple servers will probably get overloaded).

Oh, did I say it was difficult? Nope.

There are some quirks mostly tied up with page structures and HTML blocks. It also fails to "copy" images from safari when they are inside a link - I tend to get the URL instead, and there's no option to choose URL or image.

When using two finger zoom it sometimes goes into text select mode.

Yeah sometimes its a bit funny with the granularity of selectable areas in HTML. But hey, I reckon its a very easy way of copy/pasting on a phone. Mainly cause it doesn't involve pulling up "option" menus and whatnot.

Yeh, I guess I was expecting to just be able to swipe my finger across some text, then hold the selection to choose cut-copy-paste the way you select in Win Mo. I guess it wasn't possible using fat finger controls?

It works very well on pages designed for mobile devices - news.com.au for example (just for trog) is very easy to select hunks oof text.

I find the select tools awkward and cramped in the landscape mode editor, and I manage to hit done or the top bar a lot instead of the pop-up menus. This is purely because in landscape mode screen real estate is given to keys over text.

Unfortunately (at least on my device) once you go into landscape mode editing, Safari stops recognising changes in the accelerometer and won't go back to portrait mode without hitting the home button and returning. It would be much better if I could easily swing between portrait and landscape mode while in the Safari editor as it does in Email.

The problem with just swiping is that swiping is already assigned to scrolling so they couldn't have just gone with that.

Hmmm, it should go back to portrait but also it won't rotate while in editing. You have to close the keyboard first then roll to portrait or landscape

Weird, Safari must have been messing with me - once i had the keyboard open it locked to that alignment this morning. Being nicer now, but still need to close the keyboard, hopefully they'll make it so the keyboard reacts itself.

Hardware specs of 3G S

iPhone 3G (ARM11) iPhone 3GS (ARM Cortex A8)
Manufacturing Process 90nm 65nm
Architecture In-Order In-Order
Issue Width 1-issue 2-issue
Pipeline Depth 8-stage 13-stage
Clock Speed 412MHz 600MHz
L1 Cache Size 16KB I-Cache + 16KB D-Cache 32KB I-Cache + 32KB D-Cache
L2 Cache Size N/A 256KB

The combination of higher clock speeds, more cache and a dual-issue front end results in a much faster processor. Apple claims the real world performance of the iPhone 3GS can be up to 2x faster than the iPhone 3G, and I believe thats quite feasible.

If they do then Optus is stupid.

A-GPS has been around since iPhone 3G and iPhone OS 2.0 was launched. Essentially even the iPhone 2G has A-GPS, just without the GPS part since A-GPS uses cell towers to help triangulate position.

GPS generally requires clear overhead view (ie doesn't work indoors) and often takes quite a while to get a lock on your position.

Assisted GPS uses the mobile phone towers to work out an approximate location to use until GPS determines your exact location.

One of the better new features that I didn't hear about anywhere is the adjustment to the scrub feature. Before, when scrolling the time bar while watching a movie or something, the timing would jump by huge amounts at a time. Now, you can start the scrub, then drag your finger down teh screen so that the scrub adjustments get finer and finer. Really good for movies and podcasts.

As much I'd like to use my iPhone as a bit of storage, I don't want to have to cart around a driver. You don't have this problem with flash storage and hard drivers since they're just plain old NTFS filesystems.

So just bundle the f*****g driver with iTunes. Yeh you won't be able to use it on random terminals but it would be a billion percent better than no file access at all.

Interestingly the 10 day wait is entirely artificial, there's no reason for it as far as I can see.

Because we're on a business plan they unlocked my iPhone overnight.

Also:

How to turn off annoying auto-backup in iTunes. See notes in the comments for Vista / win7 prefs file location. Works well.

By the way, if anyone's wondering how to Force Quit in 3.0, you hold the lock button down until Shut Down comes up then hold Home (by itself) for six or so seconds and it'll kill the app.

This is because holding Home button is now assigned to Voice Control (in 3GS).

3 seems the best bet for me which is good since I'm already with them. The phones must be really over priced to buy outright, costs $1k from the Apple store for the phone or $1400~ over a $49 24 month contract with 3. Paying $400 or so for 2 years worth of phone and data isn't bad.

This is just a ridiculous cop out - what changes tweaks have been made with the OS that should impact general performance?

It does just work fool. Its just slower coz compared to the original 3G firmware there's a lot more stuff in it which can bog it down after lots of general use. Think of the difference between Vista and XP. You run Vista on the same computer as XP and Vista uses more memory, more CPU etc.

Simple as pie. 3.0 requires more resources than 2.0, which was the same as 1.0 to 2.0. 3G has limited resources (128MB for EVERYTHING including video memory etc).

Haha 3dee, it is a copout. You are CONSTANTLY going on about the fact that Apple ties its hardware to the software, and controls the entire shebang which is why its so bloody wonderful and everything is awesome in the land of Steve Jobs.

Newsflash dude, Vista is not INTENDED to run on all computers that XP was released to run on. There are a new set of recommended hardware minimums.

OS3.0 is INTENDED to run on iPhone series 1 and 3G. It was written specifically for these devices, and released through the Store as an upgrade. Where was the performance degradation warning that you are running it on an out of date device? The SMALL amount of change in the OS should not degrade performance if Apple have any idea what they are doing.

The Vista-XP comparison is nowehere near relevant at all. You're reaching for straws and failing.

Also how does the OS get 'bogged down' after lots of general use? Apple took the easy way out and killed apps when they are closed rather than let them run in the background. Are you implying that there is an OS-level memory leak? If so see point above about knowing what they are doing.

Yeh they do need to add a disclaimer about it running dogs*** slow if you upgrade the old, s***** clearance stock to the latest firmware. Took me (no exagerration) ten seconds to open f*****g SMS this morning.

How come I can't have the excellent basic phone features added with 3.0 without the bloat that only runs well on the 3GS? Is this a ploy to make people want to upgrade?

If "just works" includes "works but is f*****g slow and annoying" I can see why the it just works! Apple crowd are happy with iTunes, the slowest software on the planet.

I've got an original gen 1 iPhone and iPhone 3G both running 3.0. They both have issues opening SMS but only when I've got a lot of messages on the phone and from what I can tell that's more the way it stores them in it's internal file database which causes the slowdown.

Do you mean upgrade as in upgrade to new firmware or upgrade as in restore to new firmware? Everything that I've ever done with an iphone has pretty much said "Don't upgrade it'll leave you with problems, restore"

It's actually quite funny, while I alternate between jailbroken and non jailbroken on average I've had to restore my phone every 2 months or so and reboot on a fairly regular basis - have apple created the ultimate Windows phone? I do screw around with them a bit, but still.

Pretty much the only new feature I find useful is the cut and paste, but even that I use rarely. It would be nice to be able to cut and paste without every app running like a slow f*****.

Nah it has an oleophobic coating (i.e. fingerprint-less or close).

not sure about that because mines covered with fingerprints.

PCGear hit you with more expensive shipping though. However, I think it still works out cheaper by a few dollars. I'm not sure though, you'll have to work it out. I bought mine from ebay this morning with a free gift :) - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370221735545

Yer it ended up being about $5 cheaper with 1-2 days postage instead of 5-7 with the other mob.

I dont get you people hey, buy a sleek beautifully industrially designed phone, then stick an ugly as f*****g s*** case on it

Just buy insurance, and use it like the tool that it is

I am sure if you bought a nice looking car you wouldn't stick bumper panels on the whole car incase you hit someone parking - you would probably just claim on your insurance if it was bad enough to annoy you
