QGL LAN, April 99

Date: Saturday, April 24, 1999
Time: 10am - late
Venue: Yeronga State School Hall (corner School and Park Rds, Yeronga)
Cost: $10
[Note: The LAN is *one* day only]

The QGL LAN this time around will be substantially different than our previous competitive LAN's. Instead, the emphasis will be on 'trying something different' and just having fun fragging, rather than just playing the same standard competitions. While the organised competitons aren't quite yet decided on, there will be TFC, Tribes, and possibly a Q2 FFA competition (but with a difference! - more on that closer to the date).

We will also be holding QGL ound 3 for Quake1 early in the day due to the rather annoying booking stuff up last LAN that resulted in the cancellation of all gaming on Sunday. The times for this will be:

11am - Quake1 Duel
2pm - Quake1 Team Deathmatch

The timeline for the other "fun" comps is still being decided upon. As those who have played on a large LAN such as ours may have experienced, running listen servers on our network is not a good idea. Anyone who isn't on your hub will generally cop annoying amounts of lag. To combat this problem we are aiming to run as many of the popular games and modifications as we possibly can. An email was sent to qglplayers about this, but if you didn't receive it, the basic message was if you have any suggestions for mods you'd like us to run (along with popular maps and config files if you have them) please send them to us at qgl@qgl.org

Hopefully Jim will have the registration page available soon. Registering is vital as it allows us to estimate how many tables, drinks, etc to purchase for the day. It also allows us to seat you by clan. We experienced a problem last LAN with a number of people turning up on the day who hadn't registered online. This lead to a problem later in the day where registered players turned up at 6pm or later, but we quite simply didn't have a seat left for them.

While this is an undesirable situation for gamers, we unfortunately can not keep a spot for every registered player in the *hope* they will turn up. The obvious answer is: a new venue! The search continues for a venue that has the right size, location, cost, and access to suit our needs. Unfortunately, these sorts of venues are hard to come across, if you know of one be sure to let us know.

We experienced a few power problems last LAN, basically due to the excessive number of people in the Hall. Once again, a venue thing but it may be necessary to cap the number of gamers to lower than last time as there is nothing more annoying than a circuit being cut repeatedly.

As always, the QGL Admin team will be on hand to try and ensure the network is running smoothly. However, as the size of the LAN grows we are starting to look a bit thin on the ground. If you'd like to volunteer to work as a QGL Admin, we'd sure appreciate it. Contact us here to find out more.

The QGL Season 1 Finals will be in May. April should be a chance to unwind and really enjoy yourself, I hope to see you all there!
