Dear Participant,

This is a study about healthy gaming and prevention of gaming-related harms.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PCYWDNG

You are invited to participate in a study that aims primarily to investigate regular Australian gamers’ perspectives on strategies for reducing harmful gaming. This research is aimed to inform scientific and policy discussions on prevention strategies of gaming harm.

Who can participate?
You are invited to participate if you are 18+ years old, Australian resident, speak English, and are a regular gamer.

What will I be asked to do?
The survey will cover your basic background, your gaming and game preferences, and your beliefs about personal control in life. It will then obtain your views on various harm reduction strategies for gaming behaviour.

How much time will the project take?
The survey will take about 15 minutes to complete.

YOU WILL ENTER A DRAW TO WIN A $50 VOUCHER AFTER COMPLETING THE SURVEY

What will happen to my information?
The survey is anonymous. Only the researchers will have access to the data and no identifying information will be present in the findings or in any subsequent publications.

Thank you very much for your help on this project.

Sincerely,

Cainan Rodrigues Roncati
and
Dr Daniel King

PS: We attempted to contact AusGamers twice. I hope this is okay :)

Hi Steve,

Perhaps I was not using the expected method to contact the Admins. I used the following link:

https://www.ausgamers.com/contact/

Here is the emailed which I attempted to send:

"To the Admin,

My name is Cainan Rodrigues Roncati and I am a Psychology Honours student at The University of Adelaide. I am conducting a study that investigates what gamers think about healthy gaming and strategies for preventing or reducing harmful gaming. I would be very grateful if you would permit me to invite members of your forum to participate in the survey.

The survey is completely anonymous, takes about 15 minutes, and participants enter a draw to win a $50 voucher. The study has been approved by the University of Adelaide’s ethics committee.

Further background: Gaming is enjoyed by billions of people, but a very small percentage of players experience harms resulting from excessive play. There has been some recent moves and discussion on ways to prevent gaming-related harm, especially in East Asia, but research is yet to explore the views of gamers themselves regarding these measures, including some steps which are quite prohibitive (e.g., Shutdown laws). This project investigates the Australian gaming community response to proposed gaming harm reduction measures, which we believe would make an important contribution to the ongoing discussion in this area.

This project will be conducted under the supervision of Dr Daniel King from the University of Adelaide. If you have any questions about the project please do not hesitate to contact me at cainan.rodriguesroncati@student.adelaide.edu.au, or at 0430 771 801. Attached is the advertisement which we would like to post in your forum, which includes a link to the study.

Thank you for your time and consideration of this request.

Cheers,
Cainan Rodrigues Roncati
and
Dr Daniel King "

Thank you for your help and attention. I do not mean to be intrusive. I am simply trying to collect responses from as many Australian Gamers as possible so that the voice of the gaming community is more accurately represented.

Regards,

Cainan

Hi Tanaka,

I emailed on the 1st of May at approximately 12 pm and then again on the 4th of May at a similar time. Perhaps I should have waited a little longer.

I would love read your thoughts, as a gamer, about how different countries are trying to "handle" problematic gaming. Nevertheless, if you, the Editors, or other users, feel that this post is intrusive, I will promptly delete it.

Thank you for your patience and understanding guys :)
