Hello!

My name is Maddy and I am conducting a study about engagement with video games. This is for an Honours project at the University of Adelaide.

If you are interested in participating, click on the link below for more information.
To be eligible, you must be:
• 18 years or older
• Fluent in English
• Currently playing 1 or more video games

The study is completely ANONYMOUS and VOLUNTARY. It should only take approximately 20 minutes of your time. Participants who complete the survey will also go into a draw to win 1 of 3 x EB Game Vouchers valued at $50 each. Just simply leave your email address in the final comments section if you want to be a part of the draw.

I look forward to reading your responses.
Thanks!
Maddy

P.S. I've attempted to contact AusGamers admin staff twice to ask for permission to post this but haven't heard a response. If there are any issues, feel free to move this or remove from the forum.

It's good to get an idea on the emotional state of gamers. Have to wonder what excessive gaming does to you.

A study about video game addiction with a reward to further your addiction...

I highly suggest you change the vouchers used to something more open, i.e so I can buy food with them.

Also f*** EB games

A big thanks to everyone that has done the survey so far.

Just to note, this study is not looking at gaming as simply a negative addiction, which many might. We want to see what aspects of games keep players engaged for longer than they expect, what is important to the gamer, and what they invest in it over time - whether it be positive or negative.
Of course, some participants might be excessive gamers, whilst for others it is a casual hobby. Thus the study has to include scales that will help us identify this.

"Lots of research has already been conducted regarding the positive and negative consequences of gaming but we really don’t understand the psychological processes that keep us playing games. "

Ahh, not sure what you mean by this statement, but it's 100% incorrect if you defining that little is understood what the drive is for people to continue to play games. Developers know exactly what it is. Player Psychology is very much a thing, and experiments such as Skinner box and conditioning take a huge roll in the progress of keep players engaged, among other things.

If we means, you and your peers, then I understand. A lot of this can really just be youtube'd by watching game design videos or checking out GDC Vault. I can help point you in the right direction. I'm kinda assuming though, that a requirement of the subject, is that you have a survey. It could just help you refine your understanding of the statements people are making in your survey, and deliver answers that are more appropriate based on your understanding of game design and player psychology and not just the perspective of players. You're asking a huge f*****g question, and it has a very complicated answer. If I can be of any help, please feel free to contact me.

Good luck, Maddy.

Hi NFi - thank you for the feedback. Indeed it is a big question, the answer of which a short online survey can only barely scrape the surface of. Of course, this is just a general preamble to the survey topic – our analyses will be more specific.

Just to clarify, when I said "we really don't understand the psychological processes that keep us playing games", I didn't mean that there is nothing in the literature in this regard. There is a plethora of informative research in relation to motivations for play as an example (e.g. social, entertainment, achievement purposes), as well as physiological reactions in response to the complex reward structure of gaming often found in MMOs which are designed for maximum customer retention. Despite this, the way in which say, problematic gaming for example, is understood and identified within psychology, remains incredibly dry. Thus adding to this research with self-reported data for the individual gamer is still really useful, hence why I urge participants to write in any other thoughts in the final comments section – as this is often the most valuable data! Nonetheless, you are right in that I probably could have phrased that better :) Feel free to PM if you have any further thoughts.

Cheers,
Maddy

Hi there, please note, interested participants will have until the end of this Wednesday (10th August) to complete the survey. Once data has been collected and analysed, the draw will take place and winners notified. I will make sure to post a summary of results later in the year.
A big thank you to every one who has participated so far!

Hi emjones. Certainly! In the process of data analysis and report writing at the moment. Once that's all done, I will certainly post a summary of the findings here on the forum. Thanks for everyone's patience!
