How to Turn Your LG 4K OLED TV into an Impressive UltraWide PC Display

The new OLED range from LG is great for console and PC gaming. And with the latter in mind here’s how you can make it go UltraWide.

With the release of next-gen graphics hardware last year, from the release of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 series through to the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X -- there’s naturally renewed interest in obtaining a new display primarily for games. 4K, 120Hz, HDMI 2.1, VRR support in the form of G-Sync and FreeSync -- these are all the things to look out for.

With NVIDIA’s new GeForce range supporting the new HDMI 2.1 standard, which is available across the entire LG 4K OLED TV range alongside 4K 120 Hz output and G-Sync support, it’s no wonder that we dubbed the new 48-inch model something of a perfect display for both high-end PC games and the latest next-gen consoles.

But, here’s where the OLED difference comes into play - the ability to turn any 2020 LG 4K OLED TV connected to an RTX 30 series GPU into a true UltraWide. And we were able to get exactly that working across the RTX 3090, RTX 3080, and RTX 3060 Ti. We didn’t test on the RTX 3070 but it’s safe to assume this works across the entire RTX 30 series connected to an LG OLED.

For those that have experienced UltraWide gaming, yeah, this is a big deal.

The UltraWide Difference

The UltraWide display, which presents a 21:10 aspect ratio image has grown in popularity over the past few years. Separate to TV-style 16:9 displays and traditional PC monitors the effect presents a two-displays-in-one option. Negating the need to run multiple screens whilst also offering up big screen immersion comparable to watching a movie. Most modern PC titles support the UltraWide resolution and the effect is cinematic and immersive in the way catching a big widescreen movie at the cinema can be.

At the most basic level the field of view is increased in the sense that you see more of the game, whether that be in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, DOOM Eternal, Horizon Zero Dawn, or even Cyberpunk 2077. As seen in the video above, captured via the LG CX 48-inch 4K OLED and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090.

The OLED Way

One of the main reasons an LG OLED can double as an UltraWide (which is also awesome for productivity) comes from OLED self-lit pixel technology -- where black levels are, well, black. This means during a scene transition or a mostly black screen the parts you don’t see are effectively those sections of the LG OLED display turned off.

So, even though the LG OLED presents a 4K 16:9 image with an aspect ratio of 3840x2160 -- creating an UltraWide 21:9 resolution option means that the black bars you see aren’t actually a part of the image. You get a true 3840x1600 21:10 image that’s great for both productivity and playing games. (You can also set this to 1620).

Setting it Up

Setup is incredibly simple too:
    1. Open up NVIDIA Control Panel
    2. Under ‘Change Resolution’ click on the Customise button found underneath the available options
    3. Here set Horizontal Pixels to 3840 and Vertical Lines to 1600 (or 1620)
    3. Make sure Scan Type is set to progressive and then click on Test to make sure it’s all working
    4. Now you can select the new UltraWide resolution and swap between 16:9 or 21:10 depending on the game.

Note: Currently only 8-bit colour is supported in custom resolutions which hopefully will be updated in future NVIDIA drivers, which means HDR will be disabled.
