The forgotten Monkey King becomes legend once more. We go through the frame's recent rework and take a look at the newly released Prime variant.
Once upon a time in the long long ago, Wukong was the goto frame if an invincible god was what the mission called for. Realising that the virtually unlimited immortality that resulted from combining his Defy ability with the Rage or Hunter Adrenaline mods was indeed broken, and led to utter boredom, Wukong usage declined to below Atlas-like levels.
Fast forward to Update 25.2 and Wukong's massive rework is released, and the forgotten Monkey King becomes a legend once again. All his abilities were retooled, and while no longer immortal, he's pretty damn close to being god-like. There are now two abilities that grant invulnerability - albeit for rather short periods - the upside being that one of them provides heals, and the other armour (based on the amount of damage "defied") and both will cleanse any negative status effects. His passive has been completely changed, giving Wukong the ability to defy death up to three times in a mission, and granting a sweet random buff (see below) when fatal damage is received.
The old Iron Jab ability has been absorbed into his ultimate Primal Fury which manifests the Iron Staff as an Exalted Weapon, outputting huge amounts of damage. In its place, Wukong's first ability Celestial Twin creates a clone of Wukong (with a massive health boost) to fight alongside, well himself. Sounds weird, and sure his melee attacks are kinda bugged, but the clone is a handy ally to have beside you.
And if that doesn't convince you to revisit Wukong, the Prime variant has just been released, along with Prime versions of the Zhuge crossbow and Ninkondi nunchaku (nunchucks). Wukong Prime boasts increased armour, energy, shields, as well as a boost to sprint speed. And while the old Wukong was a somewhat hideous frame to behold, the new Prime skin is highly detailed and nothing short of spectacular.
Mmm, stunning. Ahem. Okay, let’s get to it.
Passive Ability aka Five Levels of Immortality
Wukong has learned five techniques to avoid death whenever he takes fatal damage. Wukong will be randomly allowed 3 of these techniques per mission to avoid death 3 times. Each technique will make Wukong avoid entering bleedout upon taking fatal damage, invulnerable for 2 seconds, restore 50% health, and provide a unique buff:
Primal Forces: 300% elemental damage for 60 seconds
Heavenly Cloak: Invisibility for 30 seconds
Cosmic Armour: Invulnerable for 30 seconds
Monkey Luck: Extra loot drops for 60 seconds
Sly Alchemy: Orbs 4x more effective for 60 seconds.
Shedding part of himself, Wukong creates a twin to fight by his side. Attack at range and the twin will melee, pull a blade and the twin will lay down covering fire. Use again to command the twin to attack a target with increased damage.
Augment Celestial Stomp commands his clone to perform a slam attack suspending nearby enemies in the air.
The clone is a super handy AI controlled ally that taunts enemies and destroys them using either melee or ranged weapons, depending on what weapon you have equipped. The targeting on ranged weapons can be off, and the clone will sometimes attempt to shoot enemies through barriers and walls. The melee attacks are also buggy, as the clone ignores the range of the weapon and runs right up to the enemy before punching them in the face.
Evaporate into a cloud of mist and float through the battlefield, dazing any enemy encountered, while healing Wukong and his twin.
Augment Enveloping Cloud grants allies (including rescue targets and sortie defense operatives) invisibility when near the cloud.
An amazing ability that CC's the enemy, grants invulnerability, heals both Wukong and his clone, strips negative status effects, and moves you insanely quickly in any direction. The heal is so good that even a minimal duration build benefits greatly.
Wukong and his twin become invulnerable and defy enemies to attack. All damage is captured, stored, and dealt back in a single furious strike of Wukong's staff. Bonus Armor is then granted relative to the damage captured.
No Augment Mod
Wukong's second immortal ability soaks up all damage received (and removes any negative status effects) while active and slams it back in a big radius. As a bonus Wukong gets an armour buff (that depletes over time) based on the damage absorbed.
Summon the Iron Staff and unleash fury.
Augment Primal Rage increases the critical chance of Primal Fury per kill.
Probably one of the most damaging melee attacks in the game, Primal Fury allows the Iron Staff to wipe huge quantities of enemies in a large radius. Being an Exalted Weapon you can mod and Forma the Iron Staff to your heart's content - you can even use Blood Rush to get your combo counter up and earn those juicy red crits. The attacks take a little getting used to as it's based on directional inputs from your controller/keyboard rather than timed button presses, and is a preview of what we can expect in the Melee 3.0 rework that's Coming SoonTM.
