AusGamers' Daniel "Eorl" Roy takes a glance at five of the hottest upcoming local indie devs and sees just what they have in store...

Welcome back to another Indie Friday feature! As you can guess from the title, we'll be taking a look at five local Australian indie developers and just what they have to offer on the game development scene. Do keep in mind that some of these titles aren't quite ready, but we believe that even without the polish these games have some great potential at showing off Australia's very prominent local talent.

Unknown Orbit | Exbleative | Website: http://www.exbleative.com/unknown_orbit/ | Platform: iOS

Float, jump and fly around a surreal, 3D planetary system as a comet in Unknown Orbit. Use the planet’s hills and valleys to launch yourself into deep space and hurtle through sparkling firefly clouds to reach the orbiting moons and beyond.

Space out and enter a state of flow with an entrancing vibe and soundtrack by Rhys Lindsay. Perfect the smoothest landings and highest jumps, and glide across a strange orbital landscape. Two nearby stars are melting away your comet's icy core, so you must absorb snow balls that are scattered around the environment to prolong your life. String together moves to gain an ever increasing and limitless point combo, then compete with your friends on the Game Center Leaderboard.

Unknown Orbit is available exclusively to iOS at this time, which you can find on the store over here.

Orithia: Dragon's War | Digital Warriors Studios | Website: https://www.facebook.com/OrithiaDragonsWar | Platform: PC

An ancient war is being waged. One that threatens to destroy the world, and all who dwell within it. Take control of an enormous range of units in this unique and compelling tower defence game and choose your side in Orithia: Dragon's War.

Gain rare and valuable collectible cards to summon powerful warriors, trade units with your friends to increase your army, and progress through battles either alone in the gripping story mode, or against a friend from anywhere in the world. Deploy units with incredible special abilities to strengthen your allies, or to weaken the enemy forces. Activate powerful spell cards to turn the tables and devastate your foes!

Check out some alpha gameplay of Orithia: Dragon's War below, and you can find out more information on the game over at their official Facebook page. An alpha demo is expected to be released over the weekend, so keep your eyes peeled for that as well.

Face Invaders | Electric Mammoth | Website: http://www.faceinvadersgame.com/ | Platform: iOS (planned for Android and Windows Phone)

Face Invaders is an arcade / action iOS game which allows players to put their own face on their in-game character. The player is then attacked by endless waves of increasingly nasty aliens and terrifying stinky bosses. Each enemy requires a specific touch input to destroy so the gameplay is a frantic mix of tapping, slashing and squishing. It’s kind of like ‘Fruit Ninja,’ except without the fruit... or the ninja.

The player will also complete missions to unlock and use a growing arsenal of powerful special abilities to help them in their quest for high-score glory on the global leaderboard.

Face Invaders features lovingly crafted art and music that pay homage to the golden age of intergalactic adventure. Its simple gameplay and colourful cartoony graphics make it a hit with kids, but Face Invaders will also melt the face off any hardcore gamer who underestimates the intensity of its frantic touchscreen action.

Face Invaders is available now through the iOS app store, and is also planning a release on Android and Windows Phone.

Words With Monsters | Friendly Cat | Website: http://friendlycat.com.au/ | Platform: iOS, Android

Words With Monsters is an adorable and hilarious new take on your favourite old word game, this time with princess-saving, monster-slaying adventure.

You play the role of Sir Wordsworth, a sociopathic knight with delusions of intelligence. Armed with a wooden sword and a bucket for a helmet you’ll take on the ‘evil’ monsters of the land with your verbal prowess.

Word games like Scrabble are an old favourite, but when the game play goes on for too long, the fun drops off quick. Once the words branch out to the good edge tiles or somebody gains a significant lead - people start to play defensively and the board clogs up. The time taken for each turn becomes longer and longer and the game becomes boring.

Words With Monsters is available on both iOS and Android. Check out the trailer below to see the game in action.

Kraden's Crypt | WiseWonky | Website: http://www.kradenscrypt.com/ | Platform: PC

Kraden's Crypt is a physics influenced coop dungeon crawler rogue-like game for up to four players. The weapons are controlled directly from the mouse or game pad to give you fine grained control. As you explore the crypt you fight many different monsters and bosses.

You’ve sealed into the Kraden’s Crypt and you must climb your way to the very top where Kraden himself resides. Many dangers await! Fight alone or with friends with a unique combat system, where you control every attack. Whether it be the hurl of your spell, the swing of your weapon or the pluck of your bow. Mix and match equipment and weapons to determine your class and play style. Fight Epic bosses, hordes of enemies and why not celebrate your victories in the tavern rooms with a few friendly crypt creatures? Never play the same game twice with our randomly generated Crypt that can catch you off guard through any given door!

After trying Kraden's pre-alpha demo out for a good few hours, I have come to the conclusion that physics-based games are always going to be hilariously fun. With an emphasis on randomised rooms, Kraden's Crypt never felt stale, and I always wanted to explore more even after my character's final breath. While it is only in alpha at the moment, the basic ideas are there and they are fun, a key component to any game that gives your character only one life to live. This is one to keep your eyes on.

Stay tuned for next week's Indie Friday, and if you like what you see let us know in the comments! Also if you happen to be an local indie dev yourself and want to be featured, just drop an email and we'll get you sorted.
