Xbox One's September update has been scheduled to roll out a bit earlier than planned, with the update being offered to console owners over the next few days.

Microsoft began testing the latest update earlier this month. In addition to the new media player app, which will support formats like MKV, animated GIFs and DNLA by the end of the year, the system update adds new party features, new SmartGlass features, the option to boot directly to TV and more. Those in Australia will also be able to use the "Xbox On" command, so no more switching to US region.

Console owners should be given a prompt when the update is ready to be downloaded for their region, however while you wait check out the full changelog over on Xbox Wire. The list is rather long, and the added features will definitely help those wanting a more media-orientated console.

this is interesting and exciting news. for me, at least. Booting straight to tv might convince me to plug foxtel back into the xbox one.
