Previously only offered to high-tier backers of its initial crowdfunding phase, UK developer Frontier Developments has invited another 10,000 players to participate in the first beta stage of Elite: Dangerous, the ambitious sci-fi title helmed by Elite creator David Braben.

However, this particular beta won't be for everyone's tastes, as the cost of entry is GBP£100 -- around AUD$180 at today's rates. Here's what you get for that much scratch:
All the major features that have been added through the four Alpha phases are available In the Premium Beta now!

Explore 5 star systems across a 200 cubic light year volume of space set within the 400 billion star systems of the Elite: Dangerous Milky Way galaxy.
How will you play? Pirate, Trader, Bounty hunter? Join more than 10,000 people and start blazing your own trail.

The Premium Beta, which includes a lifetime Expansion pack, is available now.
  • Beta online multiplayer PLUS Single Player Combat missions to develop your Sidewinder skills
  • Automatic access to all the Beta development stages
  • All major downloadable expansion packs as they are released
  • A download copy of the released game
Full details can be found over at the game's official online store.

180...what a load of bulls*** lol

I don't care that StarCitizen will take longer to come out it will be leaps and bounds over Elite and only costs 35 to get full access to everything

I reckon it's a great idea. It keeps away all the wankers who would normally just throw $30 at a beta, play it for a week and then declare the game crap for not being finished. This way they get a decent amount of money and less wankers. It's not like the game won't have a regular price at release, so if you don't like the beta price wait until it's finished.

Yeah because there is no shortage of wankers who would just throw 180 at a beta and still call it s***...they don't exist at all.

Lower the price more people go in some will be douches but allot will still test and they would have more funds towards the game it's not like I want them to not succeed it's good that space sims are coming back but doing silly decisions like this only hampers themselves

Premium beta just opened the dev process up to 10000 more players who could afford this. I'm sure Frontier are pacing it just as they desire. Too rich for my blood though. I'm going in at beta ~$90.
The final game is going to be unreal: Check out the FAQ for details on how multiplayer is going to work.
