While World of Warcraft's much-loved races are soon to be getting a visual makeover, developer Blizzard has revealed that those worried about performance shouldn't expect a drop come the release of the new expansion, Warlords of Draenor.

Blizzard community manager Taepsiulm has taken to the forums to calm the crowd, stating that "you shouldn't be worried about any big drop in performance; things will most likely remain very close to what you are experiencing right now." With the addition of some rather hefty model polygon increases, its no wonder users are somewhat worried about their performance, though it looks like Blizzard are well aware of the situation.
Client performance is something we care about a lot. It doesn’t matter how well-designed an encounter is: you aren’t going to have fun raiding at 8 FPS.

We want everyone to be able to enjoy playing with the new models, and our dev team is working hard making sure that WoW is as resource efficient as possible in order for that to happen.
The post also revealed that Blizzard have plans to implement performance improvements for add-ons that process combat data and other stats, mainly within raids and dungeons. The development team will also reduce the amount of visual clutter that is visible during fights where groups of players are involved, hopefully reducing the performance issues seen in the much larger fights.

World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor will be launching sometime later this year, and will feature a number of new additions including the improved character models, new animations and a level cap of 100.

If your PC can't run WoW at acceptable framerates you should probably be more worried about some of the other hobos stealing your cardboard house than making it to that raid on time.

Some encounters still have framerate issues. I remember heroic tortos on 10 man using the "kite the bats" method used to be hardcore. And i dont have a small gaming machine. At high settings when the bats came on screen id get hardcore frame drops lol and thats an amd fx-8320, sapphire 7970 oc and 16gb ram. But yes if u have issues running wow minus raids, stop playing on your gameboy colour.

I don't think Blizzard intended for bat kiting... - That must be a s*** load of bats you had there.

I think the shrink will help the game performance wise, because the maths will once again use numbers like 60, 100, 200 etc - and not 13,465,835 - 184,578,280 etc.

games been around for a while, surely people don't expect to be able to play it on the same machines.

I think part of it is probably just at its core, its an engine that was made 15 years or so ago. Sure they've upgraded it over time and improved it, but I think you can only go so far with that till you're gonna hit a ceiling. I've got quite a beasty PC, and on 25 man Garrosh with graphics on Ultra, when adds up and s*** is going off all over the place, I can feel my fps dropping into the teens at times. But yeah, squash should help, and less effects should help and whatever other optimisations they do under the hood. Its definitely getting long in the tooth though, its carrying a lot of baggage.

I haven't played the current expansion, but raided "hardcore" for all the others 25man, and over the expansions I always had a pretty high end system and I always had some sort of FPS issues in certain encounters, back in burning crusade I remember the raid having to change their resolution down to like 640x480 and effects on low just to do lady Vashj in SC, Halion in RS and so on. I remember major DCs in Onyxia and many more. Always been pretty poorly optimised once spells in raids start flying. The 64bit client seemed to help but still doesn't give me much confidence that the new models will be about the same load. I'm coming back to play WoD so we'll see how it pans out, I have a nice i7 system rocking so look forward to trying it!

Hopefully my machine will run it

500gig Samsung 840 EVO
32gig DDR3 RAM
nVidia GTX 780
i7-477k @3.50 GHz

I find doing LFR my framerate drops to around the 40 mark when s*** is getting real. All other times it sits at 60. (Dell monitor locked at 60fps)

for this ^ I just filtered the bat nameplates in elvui which fixed that particular encounter on 25man
but yeh it's definitely still an issue and you can't always work around it

10man I find is generally fine but 25 can be pretty awful, but there's still people who claim it's fine. then you ask them what their framerate is when the boss is pulled and they say something like '25' and then you headdesk. how is that fine?

^ha agreed. God bless the monk. Kegging and rolling all day. Pretty sexy dps metre as a dk but haha. Drop dots and howling blast everytime they flew past lol. And yeah was a s*** load of bats. When we beat him we were like 1min shy of enrage. And no bats were killed in the destruction of tortos lol.

Pally tanking the wind bosses in msv (or was it hof?) was awesome. Managed to get into the top 50 on WoL with about 1.6 million dps end of fight. Those days are gone with the changes to Vengeance.

Ugh vengeance is homo now. No attack rating increase. Completely nuliffies how u would do heroic dark animus.... even the heroic da was what killed our raiding guild haha.

I'm glad they're fixing vengeance, now tanking will actually be about tanking instead of doing dumb s*** to exploit vengeance and pad your damage. We had a tank who was obsessed with padding and trying to rank and would cause wipes every week on farm s*** trying to take on too much and take too many risks to get vengeance. It just made for s*** gameplay imo, especially if you were the other tank tanking alongside someone like that.

All tanks are getting their base damage buffed anyway though, so they can still do reasonable dps, as well as Mastery for tanks will give some Attack Power along with whatever else it usually gives.
