GameSpy owner Glu has announced via the GameSpy Technology site that it will be shutting down all "powered by GameSpy" hosted multiplayer services at the end of May. The shutdown will affect a lot of popular games. One of those affected by the shutdown, Bohemia Interactive, announced that it is already working on alternatives for Arma 3 and Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead. Sadly it seems many others will be left out in the cold so to speak.

"Effective May 31, 2014, GameSpy will cease providing all hosted services for all games still using GameSpy," reads a brief post on the GameSpy Technology site. "If you have any questions about how this impacts your favorite title please contact the game’s publisher for more information. Thanks for a great ride!"

This move marks the end of the GameSpy brand as we have known it over the years. In early 2013 IGN officially shut down the website of the same name. With Glu shutting down GameSpy multiplayer services, the brand as we knew it is officially dead.

There is actually no list showing what games will be hurt by the shutdown, even Wikipedia is turning blanks. Best bet is to just wait for publishers/developers to come out and say their plans, otherwise who knows really.

I'm still waiting to see how much carnage the end of GFWL will produce.
Whilst I've not seen any 'new' games show the gamespy logo in a long while, I know there's a s***-tin of legacy that'll be abandoned... Here's hoping that GS can release enough info on their infrastructure so it can be re-created by the broader gaming community.

Getting your hands on the DNS records will probably be the most important part.
