Following Epic's announcement this morning of a new business model for their Unreal Engine that will offer the game engine at a cheaper price for indies, Crytek has also revealed that it will be offering a monthly subscription option for their CryEngine.

Beginning in May, indie developers will be able to access the full version of CryEngine for a monthly subscription fee of $9.90 per user. According to Crytek, it will be a "royalty free" program, hitting back at Epic's offering with a much cheaper solution.

"When we announced the new CRYENGINE this was our first step towards creating an engine as a service. We are happy to announce now that the latest update of CRYENGINE will soon be available to all developers on a subscription basis. We are really excited to make CRYENGINE available to hundreds of thousands of developers working with Crytek to make awesome games,” Crytek's Carl Jones said in the announcement.

The CryEngine free SDK will continue to be available under its current terms but developers wanting to take advantage of the new features of CryEngine will need to subscribe to the new EaaS-Program. For a look at the free SDK in action, check out the new video from GDC below.
