A free 'Advanced Edition' expansion is in the works for FTL - Faster Than Light, due to launch alongside an iPad version of the acclaimed rogue-like, and the game's creators have taken a moment to elaborate on some of the upcoming new features.

The blog post goes into detail on systems and subsystems in the works for FTL: Advanced Edition, which including a clone bay, hacking, mind control, and a backup battery function. For the truly masochistic, there's also details on a new "hard mode' difficulty level:
For our more masochistic fans, we’ve also added an additional Hard difficulty to the game. More challenging enemy generation, lower scrap rewards, and other small tweaks should help keep the game interesting for anyone who might be bored of Normal.
Hit up the official blog for all of the finer points.

FTL: AE also promises new ships and ship layouts, a new sector and new events and encounters in all sectors, several new weapons, drones and ship augments. A specific release date has still yet to be announced, only that it's due in 2014.

Looking forward to playing this again.

Hopefully the mods I've installed will be updated for this new version.

Love FTL. When ever i hear someone say they don't like it as a game it is so very inconceivable. Its still on my desktop and i play it every now and then. Cant wait.

It's great, but I would have loved to have seen a more sandbox mode available as DLC.
