Steam OS and Big Picture Mode will soon be getting their own music interface, as revealed by Valve over the weekend. Titled Steam Music, the new integrated feature will allow gamers to play their favourite music collection while playing games, thanks in-part to the integrated in-game overlay.
With Steam Music, you can now listen to your music collection while playing games. Once you’ve pointed Steam to your local music directory, your Steam Library will include Album and Artist views of your collection.

From there you can view and play albums and tracks, manage your queue, and access the Steam Music player by pressing the Guide button on your controller. (No controller? Keyboard and mouse users can access the active player from Big Picture’s main menu.)
As usual with Steam's future features, you'll need to opt into their community group to gain early access with invites rolling out very soon. Valve did state that those still clinging to the desktop Steam will also be getting access to this new musical feature sometime in the future, though no word yet on when that will happen.

Valve promises that the future of in-game music integration will be based on beta feedback, so participating is key. Head over to the community group, where you'll note that pleas for integration with streaming services have already begun.

Playing music and gaming on the same PC at the same time is a feature now?

Why don't they just let you multi task from the desktop?

Seems like it's more for controller support seeing as they're pushing SteamOS/Big Picture for the lounge room. If it's decent enough I might use it.
