As expected, EA and DICE has lifted the veil on the next addition to the popular Battlefield franchise with Battlefield 4. A demo was shown to press at a special event in San Francisco today, and now you can take a look yourself with this 17 minute gameplay trailer titled "Fishing in Baku".
The "Fishing in Baku" video is shot entirely in-game and is the first glimpse of the human, dramatic, and believable single player campaign in Battlefield 4.
Battlefield 4 is due in Spring (Northern Fall) 2013.

The official site is now taking pre-orders for the PC, and Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are also confirmed there. No word on others yet, but PS4, and the next generation Xbox seem likely, but Wii U, less so.

Update: Some more details have made their way out via an official press release:
Powered by the advanced technology of DICE’s proprietary Frostbite™ 3 engine, Battlefield 4 offers players a glimpse into the future of interactive entertainment – a future that is more human, dramatic and believable than anything before it. With more than 65 million players worldwide, the Battlefield series has consistently been praised by critics for its world-class multiplayer gameplay, and is recognized as the only game that allows players to own land, sea and air.

Battlefield 4 is a seminal moment for the Battlefield series as more award-winning, multiplayer game design elements are incorporated into the single-player campaign. In single-player, gamers will experience huge environments, a playground of destruction, access to an arsenal of vehicles and the ability to direct squad mates. Taking a page from the social aspect of multiplayer gaming, the single-player mode will now track players’ progress, adding an element of persistence and friendly competition to the campaign.

The game made its world debut today with a staggering 17-minute gameplay demo, available for view at Battlefield.com. The demo begins as the player – Recker – opens his eyes to discover that he is trapped in a rapidly sinking car with three of his squad mates. Shooting the window is the only way out. Panic and fear are pushed aside as Recker makes a difficult decision – take the shot and recover the intel but risk that not everyone will survive. The emotional demo features a cast of characters unrivaled in interactive entertainment. Players will learn how to work together in both the Campaign and Multiplayer, issuing squad orders and comparing achievements in both experiences. Adventure and Competition will unfold through a series of beautifully crafted locations constructed with some of the best art and sound design in modern shooters. All of this is only possible with Frostbite 3 – a new standard for interactive entertainment in 2013.
Watch the embeded video below for some Bonnie Tyler-fuelled action.

Have to agree. Looks nice enough but seriously who's really buying this for the single player?

Hmm, not sure what to think about this. The singleplayer looks fantastic, as to be expected when isolated from multiplayer. At the same time I'm not sure how much of what we saw with all the prettiness will translate into multiplayer, considering how taxing just putting 64 people in the same area on a quite large map was for Battlefield 3.

I'm a bit bothered by the destruction, not much was shown off but hopefully we'll see some more side-by-side comparisons. From what was shown, it was simply destroying of small waist height barriers and pre-determined destruction in the cut-scenes. I liked the Bonnie Tyler touch though. Guess I'll wait until they show multiplayer off before passing full judgement, hopefully they can show some bigger changes to warrant the price tag.

Hawkins? Wasnt that the name of the female gunner in BF3's brief SP plane mission?

Anyone calling it dull has some pretty distorted standards, but I must admit that I really don't give a rats about the single-player component.

As much as I wish they had have debuted it with a 17 minute montage of hot multiplayer action, I do understand why they went this route for the broader mainstream viewers and call of duty bro audience.

It was bog standard arena shooter gameplay versus dumb as f*** enemies who just stand there while you shoot them. I'd say anyone who thinks it looks remotely interesting has distorted standards. Looking forward to it getting a 9.9 score though!

I thought it was really good less automatic actions and more gameplay which i like... i hate when u have to press f or e at the correct time. I got my money worth out of BF3 probably get BF4. However might need a new computer

Gotta go with fpot on this one. I cringed when I heard the Jeep noises and the knife animation, exactly the same as bf3. Only differences I saw was the side mounted iron sights, incoming gunfire sounded better and the graphics seemed a bit nicer. This should have been an expansion pack.

There is no denying it was full of explosions and bullets and stuff. Personally I find arena shooters to be incredibly boring and predictable. There is nothing at all exciting about moving from set piece to set piece killing dumb enemies until they have stopped respawning. Especially if all we can expect are the cardboard cut-out characters we saw in that opening scene with their utterly laughable dialogue. I am guessing we aren't supposed to take the characters or story seriously in BF3 and CoD but when you have such a badly written story elements combined with such formulaic gameplay it just creates this perfect storm of mehness that I don't care about.

I guess I could be proven wrong and BF34 could have one of the most engaging storylines of all time with fresh engaging characters and complex motivations but honestly, what are the chances of that happening?

The odd part of this video is how he is obviously playing with a controller, but they have "Press E to open door" etc.
Either:
1) One of the next gen consoles will have an E button.
2) This was a demo on console, but DICE thinks they can fool the PC faithful by "painting" it with PC type prompts.
3) This was actually on PC, but DICE like to test using a controller?

Anyways, OK video, nothing new. And in no way a revolution on BF3.
I really hope for a return to BC2 physics and destruction, because Frostbite 2.0 was a regression on 1.5 (destruction physics-wise).

love bf3, got the premium, this looks great but i still feel like they just got bf3 out the door and they are releasing bf4, the end game expo only came out a couple of weeks ago.

the grfx look heaps better. but it seems much more like an evolution than a revolution like bf2 to bf3 was. will get it regardless and i am sure its going to be a blast.

back to bioshock infi...

It's pretty much COD with better graphics. i.e. these games are just long choreographed cutscenes with semi-interactive bits in between giving you the illusion of immersion ...

Dear developers: give me a special-ops game that doesn't require me to blow up every f*****g thing in the game with helicopter crashes / Michael Bay nukesplosions everywhere.

e.g. try implementing proper AI line-of-sight and patrolling, and flexible missions with multiple/option outcomes, such as in Dishonored. Doesn't have to be fully open-ended and complicated to achieve this ... f*** at the very least just give me Option A (front-door rambo approach) and Option B (stealth / takedowns) when approaching a mission ...

I really want to see what they have done with MP... I'm really hoping that EA hasn't forced DICE to go COD and just resell the exact same product with a different number after it. Going to need some seriously intuitive new features to spark my interest.

You can tell by the way that they circle-strafed around corners and the lack of correction during aiming (and subsequent missing of target) that it was played on a controller, on a PC or otherwise.

wow... underwhelming....

It seems like bf3.5 - not bf4. These sort of games are falling to the COD model nowdays.. spit out a new version each year with minor improvements at $90 a pop...

Think ill stick with arma 3 for the moment..

Lol. I read an ep PCPP and it was great to see Blop2 SP and MP get smashed.

I have a feeling they were playing it on a PC using a controller.

Pathetic IMO. If you are showing a trailer for a PC game, then use a goddam mouse+keyboard like 99% of FPS gamers on PC.

I very highly doubt that. I'd bet my butt that they've got it running on a PC, with a 360 pad in.

Considering PS4 is going to be basically a PC setup, I'd imagine a lot of games will get developed on PC, then ported to PS4 when it's out because, theoretically, it should be pretty easy to do.

or perhaps, that the play tester who was recorded there is accustomed to testing console versions prior to PC version. Said person spends more time first on the console port than the PC port.

I'm wondering when in-game mic communication will get picked up by the enemy team... imagine Steam's famous 14yr old mic screamers having a logical reason to speak quietly and calmly. (MP mode)

How is it like spitting out a new version every year when it will have been two years since BF3.

I don't want to defend EA/DICE too much here, because I do still think it would be far better for users in the long term if they opened up the game's development tools to the community, and allowed open servers, custom maps and total conversions, but they really did do a bunch of things right with BF3.

They didn't nickle and dime players like they have in some of their other games, but instead made good on their commitment to a substantial series of DLC updates, so I don't see what the huge problem is with them having a new game coming out now, two years later. Especially with the new console generation launching.

As for the whole anger over it being played on a controller, but rendered on a PC, I imagine that was an intentional decision to avoid the camera movement in the trailer being too rapid and jerky. Sure a mouse and keyboard player would have had better aim, but if you've ever watched PC game replays, the view is snapping around everywhere, and while it might be ok for watching intense multiplayer matches, it's not good when you're showcasing your new visuals and want the viewers to be able to take in the environments.

TBH, I was actually pretty impressed that they debuted a long gameplay clip with the actual in-game HUD, gameplay as actual players playing the game will see it. How many other big games do that for their first trailer? Many will never even show their HUD at all in trailers or screenshots before launch.

That said, they really should have shown multiplayer as well. Anyone that got value out of BF3 didn't do it for the single-player, and I have no real reason to expect BF4's campaign to be any more compelling. I can understand why the Michael Bay campaign action makes a better first exposure for the average consumer, but it's really not what the long-time BF players care about.

How unsual, people basing their opinions on 17 minutes of cutscenes and incidental SP gameplay in a first look trailer. Not that i expect any different from people around here tbh.

When we have seen proper video of the multiplayer and/or played in the beta we can pass judgement on whether this is a rehash of bf3 or whether DICE has actually tried to develop this into something unique.

The singleplayer of Battlefield games is inconsequential at best, and thats how it should always be.

What a disaster. Looks like every other SP game, just with a nice engine. Also it's played by someone who's crap at what looks like the easiest difficulty setting.

It's a Multiplayer game, why not tell us about this. Not another lame developers attempt to make a video game movie, which is just a generic POS.

I think it might have more to do with fluid movement making it easier for the viewer to see whats going on than snappy quick movements you'd see with a mouse.

Didn't entice me enought to pre-order and I love BF3... Really didn't seem that different from BF3. And Frostbite 3.... really?!? I think its a couple of tweets on the engine and for marketing they are calling it a whole new version. No where near the difference that you see with 1.0 to 2.0

Looks good visually but I don't want a single player, I have plenty of game for that. They just need to make a good solid Multiplayer and release a few DLC and then open it up for mods and maps.

In response to people saying "BF3.5":

I'm struggling to understand exactly what you require before DICE are allowed to call an offering "BF4". If the amount of content in this release is equal to what was delivered in vanilla BF3, why should it be called an expansion pack? We are well past the days where an entirely new game engine is a fundamental part of offering a new game. The Frostbite engine in BF3 already provides an exceptional platform for "BF style" games - infantry/ground/air/water combat in large but not huge areas.

If BF4 releases with a single player campaign of similar length to BF3, and the same amount of multiplayer content (maps, weapons, vehicles), suggesting it should be called BF3.5 seems spoiled.

Frankly, the amount of entertainment delivered by BF3 Premium over the last two years has been excellent value.

What's also dodgy is they are trying to mislead people into pre-ordering to get Premium. When it's not the same as premium for BF3.

They delete threads on battlelog about it, won't reply to tweets on it.

So it seems like it'll include one map pack at most and then all other expansions will still have to be bought.
