During the first presentation at this years PAX East event in America, Blizzard has revealed their upcoming free-to-play title Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. In development by only 15 of Blizzard's brightest, the card game will be set in the Warcraft universe with players able to build around one of nine classes in the Warcraft universe as they battle it out on a top-down board.
Blizzard Entertainment’s Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is a free-to-play strategy card game.

Each player’s card deck centers around a hero representing one of nine iconic Warcraft classes, customized with a set of minions, spells, and/or weapons based on individual strategy and available cards. Players will be able to hone their skills in practice matches against the computer, and when they’re ready for the challenge, they can take on their Battle.net friends and other players in friendly duels. To further develop their decks, players will be able to acquire cards by crafting them and by winning or purchasing new card packs. With hundreds of unique cards to choose from, the potential card combinations and possible strategies are endless!
During the presentation Blizzard revealed various parts of the game, including the ability to create your own customised deck or get the game to do it for you based on a certain class from the Warcraft universe like a Mage or Warrior deck. Players will also find the ability to buy booster packs, with a quite over-the-top visual aspect to opening them up which includes a quite large explosion of light.

Those familiar with previous card games like Magic the Gathering will find key similarities between the two, however Blizzard are looking at changing up the style of play with various tweaks. Players will be able to craft new cards, with a disenchanting option available for those slightly overwhelmed with duplicates. "We’ve always loved collectible card games at Blizzard, so it’s been exciting to bring everything we love about the genre to life in Hearthstone," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We’re putting a lot of focus into creating a fun new game that’s easy to pick up and play, but also has a lot of depth. We can’t wait to share it with everyone."

Check out both the two trailers including the cinematic trailer below as well as a handful of various screenshots which can be found alongside a whole range of information on game modes at our game page.

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft will be available on iPad, PC and Mac sometime this year (not Blizzard Soon) with a beta occurring shortly which you can sign up for on the official website.

If it turns out not to be a joke I'll give it a try but it just seems weird that Blizzard is putting a heap of effort into this and just giving it away.

The game is free, but you pay for more cards, thats where they'll be making their money

Since it's an F2P game I'm hoping it doesn't become Pay to win, otherwise may as well stick to solitaire :-)

Not a big fan of Warcraft but a card game seems interesting, might be worth a shot.
