It looks like Ubisoft's next Assassin's Creed title may be set in the times of the high seas, according to new marketing materials sent to Kotaku which label the next title as "Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag". While Ubisoft has yet to actually confirm the existence of this new Assassin's Creed game, it stands to reason that the developer wouldn't want to push the unique (and under-represented) naval combat seen in Assassin's Creed 3.

The Montreal based company has previously confirmed a new Assassin's Creed title in the making during their third-quarter earnings call, where CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that the next instalment in the successful Assassin's Creed franchise will be coming in the company's 2014 fiscal year.

According to the Kotaku tipster, the poster shown below will be featured in stores on March 4th, and presumably Ubisoft will be confirming the existence of the title on that day. The poster reveals the well-known dressing of an Assassin surrounded by some burly looking pirates and a black pirate flag in the background.

The Examiner has also revealed what they are claiming is the first known screenshot of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, but also a few details on what to expect in the title.
Today I am bringing you the first rumored image and information known of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. The main characters name is Edward Kenway, father of Haytham Kenway from Assassin's Creed 3. Edward is known as a Privateer, Assassin and occasional pirate. The games location is set in the Caribbean on multiple islands including Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas.

The current game is running on the Xbox 360, but has plans for next generation console's as well. Finally, Darby McDevitt is the lead script writer, with tie in's from previous Assassin's Creed games.
As of yet this is still all rumours and no date has been announced yet, however a rumoured 2013 holiday release was discovered earlier this month when a Redditor claimed "to have seen the name Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flags on an airplane while peeking at a powerpoint presentation by the woman who sat in front of him." We'll have more as it comes to us.

I don't like the implication of 'peaking' at a presentation.

they need to drop the 4.

i only did the main storyline ship battles in ac3 and while they were enjoyable, i don't think i would like a whole game based around it.

Sounds good! Though I'm still hanging out for the Samurai themed AC that everyone thought was being hinted to towards the end of the first one.

I was kinda hoping we'd see some missions revolving around this back story in AC3... maybe the idea was thrown around the office as a DLC option :/

Really keen for this, first time I played a naval mission in AC3 I wanted a full game based on it.

The thought of this reminds me of Tenchu on PS1, ah the memories.
