The expected crowdfunding project for Dreamfall Chapters launched on Kickstarter over the weekend, and looks to be well on the way to raising the funding for the new adventure game sequel from series' creator Ragnar Tørnquist, the Funcom developer who stepped down from his role at the head of The Secret World to found the new studio Red Thread Games (Thanks Nerfy).
Dreamfall Chapters continues and concludes the gripping story of Zoë Castillo, the Dreamer.

Revisiting familiar locations and characters, and introducing new sights and sounds, new faces, new game mechanics, new thrills and challenges, Dreamfall Chapters takes the player on an emotional, exciting and challenging journey -- from a dystopian cyberpunk future, through the mysterious and dreamlike Storytime, to the magical landscapes of Arcadia.

We aim to recapture the heart and soul of The Longest Journey and to improve on the immersion and game mechanics of Dreamfall in order to bring you a fitting, satisfying and emotional conclusion to the Dreamer Cycle.
The project has a lofty goal of US$850,000, however, with $160K having been raised in the first five hours, and a total now exceeding $555K, it looks to be well on the way to success.

Stretch goals for the game have reportedly been planned internally, and will involve additional content, and characters, as well as more support platforms, and "a HUGE surprise for The Longest Journey fans".

Watch the pitch video below for more details, and head over to the Kickstarter Page if you feel like pledging.

I never understood the acclaim for The Longest Journey. The story was decent, but the gameplay was horrid, and I'm a long time adventure game fan. Dreamfall went even further in that direction, less gameplay, more story. Not bad games by any definition, but I never understood why people got so excited for them.

In saying that, an episodic kickstarter funded TLG game sounds like a great idea. If they get the pacing of the story right, people should keep coming back to find out what happens next (As long they don't bore us to death with second rate gameplay)

Watching the way Telltale has been able to iterate on its games across the course of a season, learning from its mistakes and successes, I think episodic gaming has a very bright future.

On a different note, I am done pledging to kickstarter. I haven't seen any of the projects I've funded come out yet, and until then I think my wallet is shut. Perhaps Kickstarter will see some sort of resurgence around the end of 2013/early 2014 when the initial projects start delivering and people's confidence is restored. Right now I have to imagine a serious decline in kickstarter money derived from gaming. Surely most people who would consider donating have already done so and are now suffering from Kickstarter Fatigue?

I've always felt the puzzles were fine for most parts, but yes, the love for TLJ and Dreamfall has always been about the story and the characters.
