In what could be considered the first time that Nintendo has actually stated a sales expectation, Siliconera is reporting that the company is expecting a sale of 5.5 million units worldwide for their upcoming Wii U console.

The company expects to sell these units before the end of March next year, with an added 24 million software units to be sold as well according to the recent first half fiscal year report. While this is probably the first time that Nintendo has publicly announced sales expectations, it might not be that hard considering the Nintendo Wii sales.

The recent fiscal report has also shed some light on Nintendo's profit forecast, which has been slashed in half from 20 billion yen ($250.5 million) to 6 billion yen ($75.1 million). This profit decrease has been attributed to the apparent poor sales in the recent 3DS handheld outside of Japan and a poor currency exchange rate. Reports are also coming through that the Wii U console will also be taking a loss for every unit, however no amount has been said yet.

The Wii U will be launching on November 30th with two units available, the white basic package and the black premium package. Both include the tablet controller. For the full financial report you can find it here.

I dunno how well its going to really do, I don't know too many (or any?) people who are planning to rush out and buy one. I mean I'm a total sucker for new tech and new gadgets and I haven't even been able to justify buying one to myself yet.

+1 to that Khel, I'm a sucker for this sort of thing, and although curious I can't see myself getting one.

Probably because there's more than a month before it's released and they haven't started the full blown christmas advertising explosion to encourage you with interesting titles and a new way to play them.

Yet.

To be fair, it's a good bridging device if you want both modernish (ps3/xbox360) games and the ability to do weird things that only nintendo do while waiting for a real console.

I'm just happy with how good steam has been so i still don't even own a console.

I have one on preorder but to be honest I think I will cancel it between now and release. I've kinda moved on from consoles a fair bit over the last few years.

Other than Zombie-U I'm not really that excited about any of the games this time around. Maybe I'm just getting OLD!

I've pre-ordered one, mostly because I figure I'll get it pretty quickly anyway. I seem to buy everything.

Yeah, that Zombie game is the only one thats stood out as really having anything going for it. The rest seem to be mostly ports with tacked on gimmicks, so fuck that. But even then, the zombie game isn't interesting enough for me to care, I mean, do we really need another zombie game?

Give me a dungeon keeper style of game where the other players are the heros trying to attack the dungeon, and they play from like a third person POV and the person with the Wii-U remote is the dungeon keeper setting off the traps and fucking with them and trying to stop them and is playing on his own screen from an RTS type POV. I mean theres a bazillion awesome ideas for games that could use it, that was one I came up with after about 5 seconds of thinking, but all the launch titles just look shit and gimmicky.

The game that looked the most fun to me, in all the trailers for Wii-U stuff at E3 and whatever, was that Lego cops one, that looks like an open world GTA style of game but its Lego. And that had absolutely nothing to do with the fact it was on the Wii-U, I just thought the idea of an open world GTA style Lego game looked really fun, I'd very happily buy that game on any other platform.

I think I'm going to hold off on this one for a bit, burnt by the Wii and not getting much use out of it.

The wii succeeded (in terms of selling hardware) because it had a hook (flap your arms around instead of just pushing a button) that grabbed the general public.

As a gamer I'm quite interested in the possibilies the Wii U may open up, but I'm not sure that the general public will care.

it was quite a gimmick that sucked a lot of people in

but boy i hear so many stories of wii's getting put away in the cupboard a few months later and never returning

it got a lot of people who aren't gamers at all into it, i reckon they won't have the same success with the U because people are wise to what the wii is now

The general public will care because its a tablet, and that's the new rage at the moment. Currently advertisement for the Wii U is low, probably because it's still a month away. Hopefully with the console out in the open, we can see some really innovative games that open up the way we are use to playing games, like Khel described with the top down dungeon keeper.

Really, the console has a lot going for it and I'm super keen to see how it unfolds. The tablet will definitely open a whole bag of new opportunities, just matter of developers jumping onto it. I can maybe see why everyone (especially devs) are hesitant about it because of the Wii and how disappointing that was for the "hardcore" market. But this does seem to be Nintendo's way of showing they still care, and are trying to give players a new method of playing.

What I would really like to see is a game that uses the pro controller for normal play, but subs in the tablet for extra things like for example mapping, inventory management or special interactions with the environment. Hell if Nintendo just makes another Pokemon Snap the Wii U would sell like hotcakes.

I remember watching my old housemate playing Arkham Asylum while I was using a tablet, and wondering why I couldnt play along with him in some fashion. It could be fucking awesome, but after the Wii failed to deliver on what seemed like a really promising concept I've become wary of novelty. For all the promise of the Wii-U, I'm yet to see anything deliver in any meaningful way.

ill admit im a massive nintendo fanboy, but im not that excited about the wii u (yet).

my wii still gets a massive work out. between me and spook jnr who im training up to be a gaming guru and spook jnr II, i cant see that ending any time soon.

stil so many quality, FUN (despite the low polygon count, how is this even possible) and interesting games to play on the wii.

My Wii just collected dust after I had finished twilight princess until I soft modded it about a year ago. Then it got another 2 or 3 months of use and now I just use Dolphin.
