The quite successful ArmA II mod turned standalone zombie survival game, DayZ, has finally begun showing off in-game screenshots, with the first batch showcasing a new interior that will be featured in many of the new enterable buildings.

With nicer table cloths and some added bloom, the work in progress screenshots showcase just some of the changes that developer and creator Dean "Rocket" Hall is striving for in the standalone version of DayZ. One of the bigger changes is the notion of more buildings to enter, including changes to already existing ones on the Chernarus map, dubbed "Chernarus Plus" for the standalone.
Our artists have been very busy, methodically going through all buildings in Chernarus and adding interiors. The task can be pretty difficult, when the buildings where made interiors were not considered so it an be a challenge for the artists to make the interiors both look correct and work properly.

The village I used to take the screenshot in now has all its buildings enterable, including the sheds. Most focus has so far been on the buildings that are situated outside of the center, but focus now is turning to doing interiors for the city buildings. This is complicated by our desire to dramatically increase performance, and given the scene complexity inside cities we need to balance this with the desire to increase building scavenging opportunities inside the cities.
You can check out some of the screenshots below, or head to our game page for the full set. You can also check out the official Tumblr blog for previous news items on the progress of DayZ Standalone.

Hmm, I thought they were going to use the ArmaIII engine for this.

Oh well, still looking forward to this.

Someone was telling me they're using the ARMA II engine with some elements from the ARMA III engine because the ARMA III engine wouldn't allow them to customize enough to have Day Z work or some crap. It's a shame. Would have been nice if the game didn't look like shit and the zombies didn't move all retarded :(

Steps for money-making:

1. Develop alpha mod for your employer's engine
2. Watch people buy base game for the sole purpose of playing the mod, while your employer benefits and continues your employment.
3. Switch to standalone product and watch people pre-purchase the alpha and don't provide discounts for people who supported DayZ/Arma II earlier when they made the purchase in Step #2.
4. Discontinue mod-based version. If anyone complains, state that people bought Arma II for Arma II and that the mod was free - despite no one in actual reality caring about nor wanting Arma II itself.
5. Switch to non-discounted price at full release (if this even occurs)
6. Profit.

They are using Arma II engine with some tweaks because they then benefit from all the refinements that it has received over time and will continue to receive. Less time adapting to new tech/features and fixing issues and more time making moar stuffs.

The mod has not been discontinued, it will be used to test out new ideas in the future. As to how much that happens only time will tell, I personally would not care if it was discontinued. And stop acting like you're entitled to ongoing updates for your free mod.

One of the key reasons why they have gone standalone is the hacking, they cannot fix it any more than they have now with out making changes that would affect Arma itself, this would fuck with a heap of mods that already exist not to mention Arma II itself. And despite what you think, a lot of people enjoy Arma II. Also has been stated numerous times that the price point for the standalone will remain low to attract as many people as possible.

Arma II is a beautiful game, bugs and all - it's kind of a BIS feature to have bugs in there mil sim games anyway :P

The free Day Z mod is a hacker infested crap fest, it was a fantastic game that was great to play that was ruined by those who like to cheat. Instead of just shutting it down they still allow it to run, which is great for those who want to continue to play a free version.

It would take a lot of time to fix up the Arma II engine and during that process it would probably jigger up the xpacs and all those fan mods for the original intent of Arma - ie a mil sim. So making a hyper-successful mod standalone is in fact a good call, imo, for all those reasons. I believe Rocket said that the free mod would feature things they want to include as a kind of beta test so it's not like it will never receive any sort of update.

Of course ultimately this was brought about by the cheating game, those unskilled and untalented gamers who cannot win or have fun by any other method. You can thank them for having this free mod step back out of the light so it's paid brother can take it's place.

It's always cute when people try to convince others that someone would buy Arma II in 2012 for the game itself, rather than solely for DayZ - which for all intents and purposes was indirectly financed by the Arma II developers who got a return through the base game sales.

For the small number of people who bought Arma II prior to the mod, then the mod could be seen as a bonus. But don't kid yourself into claiming the mod was some charity work or something ...

Not really impressed by interior design, plus it's a little neat for an apocalypse. I'll start getting excited when i see some blood and zombies...

It's also cute watching Trauma inevitably defend every single thing about the game and suck the developer's dicks in every thread remotely mentioning it.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if the standalone Day Z is much more playable than the piece of crap the mod ended up playing like, will definitely wait to hear what others say about it first though.

This was brought up on the dayz forums, Rocket said;

I believe it is very, very easy to go overboard with any "apocalyptic" graphical implementations on textures. It can become repetitive and remove the shock value of actually seeing something like in the game. As such, we're going to complete all the interiors first before we look at making them look more "lived". This would probably be done through decals and such. The art style we are going for is more real, and gritty. More like "the road" than a zombie film style. The gore will be there, but only in specific instances and as such I think it will have more impact.

I don't defend everything about Arma II or DayZ, infact I think they have some very serious issues e.g. Netcode, physics, lighting, inventory, specific to dayz would be load times, most of which is being addressed in Arma 3. But I do call out ignorant bullshit like above when I see it.

I make no effort to hide my bias for Arma and it's mod scene in the same way I make no effort to hide my gripes with it. You can throw all the childish insults you want, you're still not entitled to shit for your free mod.

If you're somewhat interested in Arma II itself then I would suggest either Arma II free or just waiting for Arma 3 early next year. If you mean DayZ itself, just wait for the standalone near the end of this year.
