For those players who were eager enough to pre-order the Pioneer and Legend pack for the upcoming zombie survival MMOFPS, The War Z, will be glad to know alpha access has opened up today.

Currently the alpha is limited to 30% of the initial map, Colorado, with more to open up as testing moves forward. This version will also feature a slightly higher spawn rate for weaponry and attachments, plus the usual array of bugs in such testing conditions.
The War Z is an online, multiplayer, survival-simulation game set in an open world infested with zombies. Players are thrust into this post-apocalyptic world five-years after a viral outbreak that ravaged the human population and left, in its wake, a nightmare of epic proportion. Hordes of undead zombies roam the cities, and the few remaining human beings have devolved into a lawless, nomadic society where the sole objective is to survive at any cost.

Players must use skill and cunning in order to acquire food, weapons and other supplies necessary for survival. While navigating the vast landscape, they will discover cities teeming with the undead as well as other players that may or may not be friendly.
Players participating in the alpha test are also reminded that an NDA is in effect until November. Director Sergery has released a guide on what to expect in this alpha test, which you can read over here.

You can grab the full client locally from AusGamers for those having trouble using the official downloader, and you can also check out the official forums for any troubleshooting tips.

So far it's pretty fun. Can't quite say much, but it feels less clunky than DayZ, but still has the alpha crashes and bugs which is to be expected. Enjoying it, can see some long hours spent capturing towns and fortifying areas or converting places to farmland.

I havent been able to play as all servers are full, cant complain much the game is only afew hours old.

Totally dont read this until the NDA is expired.

Spoiler:
They've reused a whole bunch of assets from their last game, and the ToS are straight up copy-pasted from league of legends. Looks like a half assed attempt to cash in on DayZ.

On trying to connect to half full servers I either get "Game is Full" or "Game not Found". The one time I was able to connect I was dropped into the world with no prompts as to what to do or how to play. Ran to the nearest building then the game crashed. Cant reconnect.

Very alpha.

Eski, welcome to game dev. DayZ standalone is gonna use assets from ArmA 2 and take-on helicopters.

If you got 'em, use 'em imo.

cJay, if you're expecting to be "playing" if you pay, just buy the $20 package and play from beta onwards.

Alpha is very much alpha.

would be cool to see some alpha footage with more than 1 person running around shooting half retarded zombies - anyone got fraps/links handy?

Arkter, NDA is up so not likely.

NDA is up atm until Alpha finishes, but I'll just say that the "gameplay" videos that were released initially don't do it justice, really is different and a lot more exciting/terrifying being swamped by zombies.

I thought it looked half decent, so if you think it's a lot better i'm slightly interested.
is there still the whole stab people in the back thing going on like Dayz or are people more into teaming up and working together a bit more?
not saying that sort of playtype is shit, I'm just slightly too paranoid to like it :P

At the moment, its alpha so people are going crazy, in-game we have coined the term "flashlight wars 2012" so take that as you will. Can't really say much else, just that it is alpha and things are buggy :)

Ok ive played for alittle bit and the game is good, got killed by zombies that apparently are immortals and by a couple of bandits, but the fun is exploring and looking for the gear...game crashed a couple of time but its alpha, the engine look quite good, is it true that theres mutant zombies?

Toten, I think they over-nerfed the torch to "stop pvp" but it doesn't seem to have worked lol.

Also, the zombies have apparently got a dodgy hit-box for their heads so you have to aim a little higher than the zombie's model.

The devs claimed that they were making the game from scratch. Still youre right, its fair enough to reuse your own assets. Its not cool to steal shit from other people, a la the ToS. They even forgot to change the URLs so for a while the ToS had a whole bunch of links to league of legends.

I've seen alphas before, I'm not new to gaming, and this is pretty bad even as far as alphas go. To be taking peoples money at this point is a joke. The development notes read like the team doesnt know what theyre doing besides trying to rip of Day Z as fast as they can. At present there is nothing to do in the game, it might get better when they add more features. Avoid it for now if you enjoy fun.

I'm finding it fun, but hey each to their own. Definitely has more to do then DayZ mod that is for sure. Can actually barricade places and even set up a shop last night with friends which was hilarious.

Its definitely a lot more stable now. Crashes less and I can join games. Still not sure about the gameplay, the pking is terrible, but it makes finding a friendly person that much more endearing.

Once the safe settlements and NPCs are re-instated I think the PKing will drop down. Also apparently there will be some form of humanity/visual difference for people who kill at random.

I played a bit yesterday arvo. was cool, but I keep getting server dc's every 10-15 minutes and get shot back to the survivor screen ><
There's also some some really annoying rubberbanding etc going on, which is understandable given the american servers.

Yeah when the clan and friends system is activated will be sweet as. They are pumping patches and content out quickly though so shouldn't be too long. Loving the safe settlements, set up a hat shop in the western town heh.

Just advertised stuff through the global chat and people came up and asked for it. Had a friend with me to ensure they didn't just run off.
