Best known as either ex-id developer "Tokay" or for his reimagining of Lewis Carol's Alice, veteran designer American McGee has been hard at work on a new videogame entry with his studio, Spicy Horse, for mobile devices and the PC (through the browser), and it's looking mighty fine indeed.

Akaneiro Demon Hunters is an isometric action-RPG that clearly takes its cues from Diablo and other games in the genre, while combining a stunning Japanese-style art-direction and a Feudal twist on the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood. Unfortunately we don't have a HD version of this video, but it's still worth a look.

A beta for the game is in the works, with sign ups available from today. There's no specific release date for the game yet, with the official site only stating "2012" as its release window.

Watch it embedded below, or click here for a direct link.

The fucking juggernaut of gaming that is American Mcgee.

Seriously Ausgamers, I will personally give you $100 if you sign a piece of paper that says you will never mention his name again. You're allowed to talk about his games, but you're not allowed to call it "American McGee's Circle Jerk" or whatever his next piece of crap is. deal?

ps. for $50 I will allow you to use John Romero's name in place of the above mentioned name.

Yeah agree wtf, let the game have it's own identity and earn respect by being a good product.

Concept and art direction actually look good, could be a nice twist on diablo.

American McGee haters gonna hate.
He started it though, tacking his name onto Alice and then later a bunch of Spicy Horse titles.
Nobody seems to mind when Sid Meier does it.

Who? Probably because his games are so low profile that we don't get bombarded by it.

Imagine if it was JOHN CLARKE'S MODERN WARFARE 3, JOHN CLARKE'S CALL OF DUTY 5. etc. You'd practically gouge your eyes out.

Wouldn't stop me from buying a game (signed up for the beta of this), it's just kinda lame.

Wow, so much vitriol.

Just to clear things up, this new game's name does not have American McGee's name in the formal title, it's just called Akaneiro: Demon Hunters.

In previous interviews, McGee has stated that the use of his name in game marketing has always been the publisher's decision. In the case of the Alice games, that was all EA.

As Akaneiro is seemingly being self-published on the web by Spicey Horse, it looks like they're not using that convention this time. The name is only in the thread headline because it lets readers immediately know one of the reasons why this game, that we know little about, might be worth a look.

I was aware of all that, but it still mystifies me how his name was ever a selling point beyond the fact that it's clearly an awesome name. His games have all been so average, not bad, but not great, it just always seemed really strange that a company would want to trade on his name. I read about a clown escort with a ventriloquists dummy called Harold Mancock III this morning, and I think that's a much better name.

"BUT HE DESIGNED THOSE SICK HEXEN LEVELS BRO"...... who?....what?
