We had a chance to catch up with Maxis Vice President, Brett Barry, recently and talked to him about their forthcoming official SimCity entry.

Among many topics, Barry explains just how deep their simulation engine actually goes, reveals that SimCity has inspired people to actually go into city planning and even offers hope that cross-platform play could, in the future, include tablets.

When probed about the potential for iPads or tablets, Barry gave a coy "it’s definitely a possibility".

Since Simcity 4, Maxis games have been disappointingly shallow (Simcity Societies, Spore) - I don't hold out much hope for this. The fact that he is talking about tablets doesn't thrill me.

He wasn't talking about tablets at all. Steve asked a question about them and he answered just about as vaguely and in as few words as is possible.

Have to say I haven't played a SimCity since 2000 and this has piqued my interest. Given how much time they spend talking about the simulation aspect, it looks like they're trying to move back to a genuine simulation rather than a casual/social game.

Hopefully they do the online/whole world aspect with a similar amount of simulation, and don't get all social and gimmicky, cause that has the potential to create some really cool dynamics, like if your neighbouring city ups the police budget and stamps out crime then criminals could move into your town instead.
