id Software has released some new screenshots today depicting the very hellish revamp of the Doom 3 BFG revamp, with some very ghoulish depictions.
Re-mastered for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, this genre defining game and its add-on pack offers greatly enhanced graphics, deeply immersing the player in the demonic world of this terrifying horror masterpiece. Players will also experience a never-before-seen single-player story, ‘The Lost Mission’ featuring seven heart-pounding levels that will once again have them on the edge of their seats.
The updated Doom 3 will be featuring the previous expansion, Resurrection of Evil, and also a new single-player story titled 'The Lost Mission'. The revamped title will also see changes to the engine and some graphical touch ups to give hell a more nicer shine.

Check out the screenshots below for a reminder of the ghoulish levels and also swing by our game page for more news and screenshots.

Doom 3 BFG edition will be available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on October 18th.

Meh. I bought Doom 3 + expansion during a steam sale. Loved it when it first came out back in the day and with the free graphics improvement fixes out there it still looks good now. Dont see any reason to pay some special price for a re-released version.

ressurection of evil was the previous expansion pack, lost mission is the new one that only comes with this revamp (that's how i read it).
i wouldn't buy it. i liked doom3 & ressurection of evil but don't care to play it again with some better gfx. even if it was $10.

Haven't played it, my pc couldn't run it back in the day. If it's on PC and like $10 max I might get it.

I already have it from the ID pack, wont be buying for extra graphics, I didn't have a problem with the last lot of graphics.

Fun game Doom3 but too soon to bring out a rehash of it, I'd pay $50 for a rehashed Doom 1 & 2 with the Doom 3 engine!

If you have it on PC you can get some MODs which make it look better than this new version.

Doom 3 was a potentially great game that suffered from poor map design and monster closets. Aside from those issues I think it still has a lot going for it.

The map design in the expansion was much better, however the artifact was lame and boring and the grabber was very poorly implemented.

What it really needed was for someone to make an official expansion with kick-ass map design, reminiscent of the slaw from the first two games. If the BFG version is cheap enough I will buy it just to try the new mission. It will probably be on sale on Steam for $2.49 in six months anyway.

dunno how you can say doom3 had poor map design & then compare it unfavourably to doom & doom2 maps. those old maps are just boxes with textures on them... yes that's great for kiting around when a boss is after you but that's not great map design... it's a bunch of boxes.

doom3 had some of the most awesomely complex maps i had seen in a game. it's been outdone now by games like deadspace 1 & 2 but they are still some awesome eye candy.

what pissed me off with doom3 was the pretty average ai & the lame monster triggers where you could actually sneak up on an untriggered monster & see it trigger.

Are you joking Demon? Doom's map design was part of what made it so great, despite what they had to work with.

When designing levels for Doom, John Romero came up with several rules, among them:
Always changing floor height when I wanted to change floor textures.
Using special border textures between different wall segments and doorways.
Being strict about texture alignment.
Conscious use of contrast everywhere in a level between light and dark areas, cramped and open areas.
Making sure that if a player could see outside that they should be able to somehow get there.
Being strict about designing several secret areas on every level.
Making my levels flow so the player will revisit areas several times so they will better understand the 3D space of the level.
Creating easily recognizable landmarks in several places for easier navigation.

Yeah. Seeing them trigger was lame and after all those imps it was pretty easy to side step a fireball every time. Or dodge when they crouched to leap. Still awesome game with plenty scares and freaky parts. One of my favourites:

Yeah but they were fun, unlike Doom 3's maps. Indeed they were impressively complex, especially for the time, it's just too bad about the gameplay.

Doom 3 sure did have some great triggered events though, such as the one shown above.

Also I had no problem with the first few maps such as Mars City (except for the monster closets), because they seemed realistic. But after that there was no reason they couldn't have made them bigger. One of my favourite areas in the game was a larger one, when you have to decide which route you are going to take and choose whether or not to extend the bridge. There is a rotating bridge there and you climb down the bottom and kill a bunch of imps.
I understand they were going for a claustrophobic feel to add to the scariness, but it made the game very boring.

Doom's map design was part of what made it so great, despite what they had to work with.

no disagreement with that statement here. they were indeed great, at the time, with what they had.

however if you threw the same structure into a modern game & put textures on it, it would look very basic & ordinary. boxes & triangles.

Yeah but they were fun, unlike Doom 3's maps. Indeed they were impressively complex, especially for the time, it's just too bad about the gameplay.

so..... if a map is a simple bunch of boxes but you have 'fun' it's great map design, but if it's amazingly complex & you have a problem with the gameplay that's poor map design?

The problem with Doom 3's maps wasn't the complexity, which was awesome. It was the fact that each area was too small, making it less enjoyable. It was probably partly because they were limited to only having a few enemies in each area by the hardware at the time and large areas with no enemies would have been strange.

I wanted large areas full of enemies waiting to be mowed down, that was the comparison I was making with the first two games.
