It was looking pretty touch and go a week ago with over US$100,000 still to go on CLANG's Kickstarter funding drive, but With a little over a day left on the clock, the motion-controlled sword-fighting project spearheaded by sci-fi author Neal Stephenson reached its US$500,000 target.

Developer Subutai Corporation will now be able to continue flailing away on the project, which has targeted a PC and Mac release for the game and a very open development process. Subutai plans to use Razer's Hydra Sixense motion-controllers as a base, but will embrace community modders and intends to offer the tools created during development as a base for other games.

Since the project's inception, the developers have since settled on the Unity Engine as their technology of choice and an eventual Steam release is expected, although no release dates have been offered.

As of the time of posting, there's still 12 hours left to pledge, so head over to the Kickstarter page if you want to get in on this one.

I was really surprised at how close this came. When the campaign kicked off I assumed that the goal would be reached in short order with stretch goals to follow. I mean, I know it's a niche offering, but I've seen some pretty retarded Kickstarter ideas succeed pretty fast.

This has Neal Stephenson backing it and crowd pleasing videos... Still, backed in the end. I guess $500,000 is a fair bit compared to most Kickstarter projects that aren't Shadowrun Returns, Doublefine Adventure or Pebble. Speaking of; really looking forward to my Pebble watch later this year :)

It seems a bit risky. I love the dude and his enthusiasm, but wouldn't bet on this. It could work, but there seems to be a very narrow window for getting the whole product right and well marketed.

I don't think it's ever expected to make money, just break new ground in how sword combat is handled in games, and maybe get integrated into real games in future.
