After announcing an August 21st release date and US$14.99 price-point for Counter-strike: Global Offensive during E3, a
recent blog post by the CS:GO team confirms that they plan to open the gates for pre-orders around a month before launch and intend to open the game's beta-test up some time after that:
For pre-orders we hope to open it up about a month before release so roughly July 21st but that is a rough date we will firm up as we get closer. As for an open beta, where everyone can get a chance to try CS:GO, sometime between the pre-orders and release
For those currently enjoying the closed beta, the blog post also promises that some bigger updates to the game are on the way with a major audio update and more new characters on the way, and word that more closed-beta keys will also be rolling out.

The interface is largely simplified for the consoles, but everything is still there.

And yes, the game is like an updated source, I'm not sure if this will be the game to bring the communities together or if it will make its own entirely.
